Rare name’s singer: Ronnie James Dio. In 1983 super-superb sound board set which was “special year” in his life is appearing.
Three performances are contained in this work. “October 5, 1983 San Jose” “October 7, 1983 Santa Monica” “Fresno December 28, 1983”. Although all are California · live which radio broadcasting is known for a long time, this work is a 3-piece set which permanently saved such a name sound board with the ultimate sound of the pre-FM broadcasting master.
Some people think that “that?” Here. Yes, these three performances have been announced at the Shades label masterpiece “CALIFORNIA TRILOGY”. However, this work is neither a copy nor a remaster recurrence. It is an upgrade board by all new excavation master.

【Disc 1: San Jose Performance on October 5】

This disc has polished its definitive soundboard with the latest, meticulous remaster version.
Originally, this excavation sound board boasts the quality of the official grade, “1983” is the year of great harvest of the transcendental sound board. Compared with other super masterpieces, the sound was somewhat flat and smooth and sounded. So “CALIFORNIA TRILOGY” was directed to “Best Take Collection” by combining with short FM broadcasting. That was wonderful with it, but the mix was different between “pre-FM version” and “broadcast version”. Therefore, when listening as one live album, the sound changes subtly depending on the song, and the great cheers of FM broadcast suddenly jumped in, and there was also a sense of incompatibility.
Unlike such “CALIFORNIA TRILOGY”, this work is aimed at improving the “pre-FM version” of the one-way penetration with the latest remaster. The effect is preeminent! When listening with headphones, the sense of stereo increases significantly and even one snare makes it clear that it is in the correct position and direction that it should be. Of course, the sound is reborn brightly, making it a perfect official class sound that is inevitable even with other masterpieces, and finally it is finished in the decision board of zero switching sense of master change.

【Disk 2: Santa Monica Performance on 7th October】
Continuing Santa Monica performance is the best super upgrade! Actually this live, two years of air check recording for many years was known. 【Disc 3: Fresno Performance on December 28】
The last appearance is the high-freshest Fresno performance of “the longest broadcast of 1986”. It is an ultra superb sound board that also includes “Do not Talk To Strangers” which is not in other broadcasts, and “Heaven And Hell” in long version. Also digitized directly from the unused pre-FM broadcast master unearthed after “CALIFORNIA TRILOGY”. Although this broadcast has not been upgraded as much as Santa Monica ‘s performance just because it was a super – high quality airing check, it is definitely the “apex” just to wake the master. There is no more.
However, despite being a decision broadcast, there was a drawback in the broadcast itself. It is a reply part of “Heaven And Hell”. The broadcasting station side was roughly edited and suddenly cut off. 本作に収められているのは３公演。「1983年10月５日サンノゼ」「1983年10月７日サンタモニカ」「1983年12月28日フレズノ」。いずれも古くからラジオ放送が知られるカリフォルニア・ライヴばかりですが、本作はそんな名サウンドボードをプレFM放送マスターの究極サウンドで永久保存した３枚組なのです。
ここで「あれ？」と思われる方もいらっしゃることでしょう。そう、この３公演はShadesレーベルの名作『CALIFORNIA TRILOGY』で発表済み。しかし、本作はそのコピーでもリマスター再発でもあ・り・ま・せ・ん。すべて新発掘マスターによるアップグレード盤なのです。
そんな本作最大のポイントは、素晴らしすぎる“1983年のロニー”にあるわけですが、まずは既発との違いについて詳しくご紹介していきましょう。

【ディスク１：10月５日サンノゼ公演】
まず登場するのは、サンノゼ公演。公式『HOLY DIVER』のデラックス・エディションにも採用されたサウンドボードですが、本作はその公式盤やFM放送よりも長い発掘プレFMマスター。かつてPower Gateレーベルの『HOLLY COLLECTION』として登場した長尺サウンドボードで、放送では（公式盤でも）聴けなかった「Straight Through The Heart」「Stargazer」「Heaven And Hell」やギーソロ、ドラムソロも収録。このディスクは、その決定的なサウンドボードを最新・細心リマスター・バージョンで磨き上げたものなのです。
元々、この発掘サウンドボードはオフィシャル級のクオリティを誇るのですが、“1983年”は超絶サウンドボードの大豊作年。他の超傑作たちに比べると、ややサウンドが平板でモサッとしたサウンドでもありました。そこで『CALIFORNIA TRILOGY』では、短いFM放送と組み合わせることで「ベストテイク集」を指向したのです。それはそれで素晴らしかったのですが、“プレFM版”と“放送版”はミックスが異なっていた。そのため、１本のライヴアルバムとして聴くと曲によってサウンドが微妙に変わり、FM放送の大歓声が突然飛び込んでくるなど、違和感もあったのです。
本作は、そんな『CALIFORNIA TRILOGY』とは異なり、一気貫通の“プレFM版”を最新リマスターで向上を図ったもの。その効果はバツグン！　ヘッドホンで聴くと格段にステレオ感が増し、スネア１発でさえ、本来あるべき正しい位置・方向になっているのが分かる。もちろん、サウンドも鮮やかに生まれ変わり、他の傑作群にも引けを取らない完全オフィシャル級サウンドにして、マスター切り替えの違和感もゼロの決定盤に仕上がっています。

【ディスク２：10月７日サンタモニカ公演】
続くサンタモニカ公演こそ、最高の超アップグレード！　実はこのライヴ、長年２つのエアチェック録音が知られていました。１つは長尺放送ながらノイズまみれ、もう１つは音が良いものの、短い放送。『CALIFORNIA TRILOGY』では、その双方を組み合わせた「ベストテイク集」を目指していました。
しかし、その後になって長尺版放送の放送原盤が発掘。しかも、当時の放送を聴いていた人しか知らなかったDJまで入った完全版だったのです。本作は、その完全版をリマスター収録しています。リマスターとは言っても、それは極わずかにあった針パチを除去し、ディスク１・３と統一感を持たせただけ。それだけで済むほど、この発掘マスターは凄まじかったのです。実際、そのクオリティは幾多の既発を軽ーく凌駕。これまでの最高峰『CALIFORNIA TRILOGY』でさえ、各種放送の瞬間最高テイクをツギハギしたために曲によってノイズが噴出していていましたが、それも皆無。統一感にしても、瞬間最高値にしても、すべての既発を圧倒している。まさに完全オフィシャル級……いえ、それ以上。実のところ、DIOはウェンディが今いちクオリティにこだわっていないため、たとえ公式発掘でもブート級なことが珍しくない。そんな歯がゆいオフィシャルを一蹴してしまうほどに素晴らしいのです。

【ディスク３：12月28日フレズノ公演】
最後に登場するのは、“1986年の最長放送”の誉れ高きフレズノ公演。他放送にはない「Don’t Talk To Strangers」や長尺バージョンの「Heaven And Hell」も収録された超極上サウンドボードです。これまた『CALIFORNIA TRILOGY』以降に発掘された未使用プレFMの放送原盤からダイレクトにデジタル化。この放送は既発エアチェックも超ハイクオリティだっただけにサンタモニカ公演ほどのアップグレードぶりではありませんが、原盤起こしだけに間違いなく“頂点”。これ以上はありません。
ただし、決定放送とは言っても、放送自体に欠点があった。それは「Heaven And Hell」のリプライズ部分。放送局側が大雑把でブツッと突然ぶった切られる編集になっていたのです。それも放送の真実ではあるものの、ここまで失点皆無のノーヒットノーランが続いてきただけに、できれば完全試合に持ち込みたい。本作では放送局のブツ切り編集をシームレスに繋げ、パーフェクトなライヴアルバムに仕上げました。

【あまりに特別な“1983年のロニー”】
そんな“てっぺん”クオリティの超絶サウンドボードで描かれるのが、特別すぎる“1983年のロニー”。当時のロニーは、音楽にこそ自信を持っていたものの、レコード会社からの支援は得られず、自宅を二重抵当に入れてツアーの費用を捻出。失敗したら後はない、という背水の陣で臨んでいたのです。その決死の覚悟はヴォーカリゼイションにもアリアリと現れており、とにかく強烈。一流のロマンティシズムも発散しつつ、キャリア・ハイの激しい歌声で吠える、吠える！　吠える!!　まさに“歌の鬼”。もちろん、ロニーですから滴り落ちる情感もたっぷりと味わえはするものの、同時に覇気に充ち満ちているのです。この歌声は、成功を収めた“THE LAST IN LINE TOUR”以降とも違う。成功後のロニーは勝利者の余裕を見せていましたが、この“1983年”はあくまでも挑戦者。全身全霊で世界に挑みかかる歌声なのです。

艶やかロマンティックなRAINBOW時代よりも激しく、重く厳かなBLACK SABBATH時代よりも鋭く、丸裸の勝負心もムキ出しだった“1983年のロニー”。その最高峰サウンドボードをプレFMでこれ以上なくアップグレードした“てっぺん”です。希代の名シンガーの人生でも、特別すぎるライヴアルバムの絶頂盤。どうぞ、永久保存プレス３CDでいつまでもお楽しみください。

本編プレス３CD『DEFINITIVE 1983』は、名盤・名作の誉れ高き『CALIFORNIA TRILOGY』さえも凌駕した一大超決定盤です。しかし、たった１つだけ、『CALIFORNIA TRILOGY』に及ばない点がある。それは『CALIFORNIA TRILOGY』のボーナス・トラックに収録されていた「1984年１月４日ハリウッド公演」のサウンドボード録音。わずか４曲でありましたが、これもまた“HOLY DIVER時代のカリフォルニア・サウンドボード”でした。もちろん、マイナス・ポイントをそのままにはいたしません。今回は、そのハリウッド公演のサウンドボードではなく、元となったテレビ放送のマルチカメラ・プロショットをボーナスにご用意しました。
……と、言うわけで本作は“HOLY DIVER TOUR”のハリウッド・プロショット。「HOLY DIVERなのに1984年？」と思われるかも知れませんが、実は年明けの1984年にも３公演だけライヴがあった。本作は、そんなツアー最末期に残されたプロショットなのです。良い機会ですので、ここで“HOLY DIVER TOUR”のサウンドボード／プロショットを整理してみましょう。

・１月４日ハリウッド　［本作］

これが“HOLY DIVER TOUR”サウンドボード／プロショットのすべてです。公式化されたMONSTERS OF ROCK、公式ビデオの音声完全版『WE ROCK: COMPLETE THE CD』のユトレヒト公演を除く４公演はすべてカリフォルニア州。つまり、「本編プレス３CDと本作」でカリフォルニア４公演がコンプリートなわけです。
しかも、そのクオリティがまた絶品。実は、ごく最近になって名門「Krw_co」から発掘されたマスターでして、名物番組“ROCK PALACE”の放送VHSマスターそのものからダイレクトにデジタル化した頂点版なのです。時代柄、アナログ感覚の画質やモノラルの音声ではありますが、その鮮度は異常。白線ノイズ１本どころか、走行揺れや音声ノイズもありません。
これまでベストとされてきたのはボーナス盤『PRO-SHOT COLLECTION 1984-1986』に収録されたバージョンでしたが、そちらはデジタル・マスタリングで“引き上げた”クオリティ。それに対し、本作はいかにもマスター・ダイレクトなナチュラル感も全開。マスタリングで引き上げる必要さえないのです。実のところ、映像も音声もかなり派手に作り込まれた『PRO-SHOT COLLECTION 1984-1986』を好まれる方もいらっしゃるかも知れませんが、デジタル加工されていない「80年代感」は本作にしかないのです。
その映像美で描かれるのが“HOLY DIVER時代のロニー”。テレビ放送用の短いパフォーマンスで、変なお姉ちゃんがロニーに抱きつく珍妙な演出も面白いのですが、それ以上に“歌の化身”と化した姿は神々しくさえある。本編プレス３CDの“向こう側”が透けてくるプロショットなのです。

本編プレス３CDと併せ、カリフォルニア４公演のプロ記録を最高峰クオリティで揃えられる豪華セット。どうぞ、思う存分たっぷりとお楽しみください。
