“HOLY DIVER TOUR” became a major turning point in the life of Ronnie James Dio. The official video which is its vertex pro shot revived with the highest peak quality ever.
What is contained in this work is a multi camera / pro shot of “Utrecht Performance (Netherlands) on December 4, 1983”. It is the official image of the tradition which was released in titles such as “LIVE ’83” “Ringo Tensei” “LIVE IN CONCERT”. Although it was officially released as a part of “WE ROCK” in 2005, why “Drums Solo” and highlights “Heaven And Hell” cut it. Moreover, its “WE ROCK” is also now discontinued and it is the only situation where you have to explore second hand goods.
This work is DVD that converted such pretentious name image to the highest class. Of course, instead of “WE ROCK” with cuts, I used the Japanese version of the laser disc released in the 1980s. As a matter of fact, this work was made into a laser disc only in Japan. In 1984 when this work appeared, “live video for home” itself was novelty, but only Japan was compatible with the establishment and dissemination of laser discs. Lion ’83’ was forgotten as DIO also played back a series of images of each tour, and as a result, the highest peak image was quietly sleeping only in the Japanese disc laser disc.
Even with such a Japanese version of the laser disc, this work which made it DVD precisely from the mint quality board. That quality is exactly “the highest peak in history”, and even if you look side by side with the official DVD “WE ROCK” … you say that it is absolutely as good as … … Is it saying “Quality is very similar to what I thought” Officially also woken up from the laser disk? “” It is. Of course, even if the quality is near, this work is a laser disc board, and the cut “Drums Solo” “Heaven And Hell” is also included firmly. This is surprisingly big. As you know, DIO ‘s live band is often a medley style band, but in 1983 “Holy Diver / Drum Solo / Heaven And Hell” is a huge suite in a series. “WE ROCK” is not only a small number of songs but also it cuts out this medley, but this work can experience that great song as originally.
A wonderful thing of “1983” that will revive with such quality. I wrote it over and over, “1983 Ronnie” is special anyway. Because it is a debut of the leader band, although it is natural that there is a fight, its dreadfulness is more intense than you are viewing from the edge. After all, Ronnie & Wendy at the time put the house mortgaged by double for the purpose of making the tour cost of “HOLY DIVER” production, and it was literally in the backwater team. More than 78 performances toured the world. This is the number of performances that are never many in the history of DIO. It is a scale that tells the DIO’s kickoff that he was trying to climb by his own hand without having a big track record yet. And this work is also the time to begin realizing not only the spirit but also the success, such as “HOLY DIVER TOUR” in the second term. The sense of fulfillment has also appeared in singing, even though it is a luxurious and extensive nod, it also makes use of a lotus like a devil.
According to Ronnie’s own words, he became professional at ELF, knew the world at RAINBOW, he found success and his own music at BLACK SABBATH. He reflects in this work, the last figure running up the stairs of such success. After this “THE LAST IN LINE TOUR” is a DIO that even dries as a champion who keeps success, but this work fights hotly as a “challenger” to the last, Ronnie James Dio. Both RAINBOW, BLACK SABBATH and DIO after it, he is the only one in “1983”. And this work is the highest peak version in history, making it the only official image that recorded that figure.
It is not only a wonderful live video but also a memorial picture not two in Ronnie’s life. Only one album realized until full reproduction in his lifetime. It was not “RISING” nor “HEAVEN AND HELL”, it was only “HOLY DIVER”. This work is the top of the live video that the same “soul” lived with so much a special album. ロニー・ジェイムズ・ディオの人生で一大転機となった“HOLY DIVER TOUR”。その頂点プロショットであるオフィシャル映像が史上最高峰クオリティで蘇りました。
本作に収められているのは「1983年12月４日ユトレヒト公演（オランダ）」のマルチカメラ・プロショット。『LIVE ’83』『輪廻転生』『LIVE IN CONCERT』といったタイトルでリリースされた伝統の公式映像です。2005年には『WE ROCK』の一部として公式DVD化されたこともあるものの、そこではなぜか「Drums Solo」やハイライトの「Heaven And Hell」がカット。しかも、その『WE ROCK』も現在は生産中止となり、中古品を探るしかない状況です。
本作は、そんな不遇の名映像を最上級でDVD化したもの。もちろん、カットのある『WE ROCK』ではなく、80年代にリリースされた日本盤レーザーディスクを使用しました。実のところ、この作品がレーザーディスク化されたのは日本だけ。この作品が登場した1984年は“家庭用ライヴビデオ”自体が目新しかったわけですが、その定着とレーザーディスクの普及が両立していたのは日本だけだったわけです。その後、DIOも各ツアーの映像を連発していく中で『LIVE ’83』は忘れられ、結果、最高峰映像は日本盤レーザーディスクの中でのみ、ひっそりと眠る事になったのです。
そんな日本盤レーザーディスクでも、ミント・クオリティ盤から精緻にDVD化したのが本作。そのクオリティはまさに“史上最高峰”であり、オフィシャルDVD『WE ROCK』と並べて観てもまったく遜色なし……と言いますか「公式もレーザーディスクから起こした!?」と思うほどクオリティが酷似しています。もちろん、クオリティは近くても本作にはレーザーディスク盤であり、カットされた「Drums Solo」「Heaven And Hell」もしっかり収録。これが意外と大きい。ご存じの通り、DIOのライヴはメドレー風に演奏することが多いバンドですが、1983年も「Holy Diver / Drum Solo / Heaven And Hell」はひと連なりの巨大な組曲形式。『WE ROCK』は単に曲が少ないというだけでなく、このメドレーをぶった切っていたわけですが、本作はその大曲をオリジナル通りに体験できるわけです。
そんなクオリティで蘇る“1983年”の素晴らしいこと……。何度も書いてきましたが、“1983年のロニー”はとにかく特別なのです。リーダー・バンドのデビューですから気合いが入っていて当然ではあるものの、その凄味は端から眺めている以上に強烈。何しろ、当時のロニー＆ウェンディ夫妻は『HOLY DIVER』制作のツアー費用の捻出のために自宅をダブルで抵当に入れ、文字通りの背水の陣で臨んでいました。ここで、そんな“HOLY DIVER TOUR”の概要を確認してみましょう。

以上78公演で世界を巡りました。これはDIOの歴史上、決して多くはない公演数。まだ実績も大手の後ろ盾もなく、自らの手でよじ登ろうとしていたDIOのキックオフを物語るスケールです。そして、本作は、そんな“HOLY DIVER TOUR”でも後期にあたり、気迫だけでなく成功を実感し始めた時期でもある。その充実感は歌唱にも現れており、艶やかで伸びやかなノドでありながら鬼神の如きドスも利かせているわけです。
ロニー自身の言葉によると、ELFでプロになり、RAINBOWで世界を知り、BLACK SABBATHで成功と自らの音楽を見つけたそう。本作に映る彼は、そんな成功の階段を駆け上がる最後の姿。この後の“THE LAST IN LINE TOUR”では成功を守る王者として貫禄すら漂わせるDIOですが、本作はあくまでも“挑戦者”として熱く戦うロニー・ジェイムズ・ディオ。RAINBOWでもBLACK SABBATHでも後のDIOとも違う、“1983年”にしかいない彼です。そして、本作はその姿を記録した唯一の公式映像にして、その史上最高峰バージョンなのです。
単に素晴らしいライヴ映像というだけでなく、ロニーの人生に２つとない記念碑映像です。彼の生涯で完全再現まで実現したアルバムはただ１枚だけ。『RISING』でも『HEAVEN AND HELL』でもなく、『HOLY DIVER』だけでした。本作は、それほどまでに特別なアルバムと同じ“魂”が宿ったライヴ映像の頂点。世界に挑む決意、世界中から歓待された実感、背水の陣で掴み取った成功……その喜びが表情と歌声で刻まれたオフィシャル映像。今週末、あなたのお手元にお届けいたします。
