DEEP PURPLE of the foam that was born 25 years ago, “Satriani era”. 以上、全６公演。関東公演は幾多のライヴアルバムがありましたが、本作の名古屋公演は最後に残されたミッシングリンク。コレクションを完璧にする１本なのです。しかし、本作の旨みはそんな希少価値を吹っ飛ばすサウンド。昨今、当店ではさまざまなアーティストの極上名古屋盤を連発しておりますが、本作もまたそのひとつ。独自ルートで入手したオリジナル・マスターからダイレクトにCD化した逸品なのです。
実際、本作のサウンドは驚異的。熱狂もリアルなオーディエンス録音には違いないのですが、肝心要の楽音そのものはライン録音ばりにクリア。サウンドボードと勘違いするほどド直球ではないものの、会場の反響を感じさせないトーンは客録らしからぬ輝きを放っている。ヴォーカルのみややエコーがかかっていますが、これは反響ではなく、現場ＰＡによるものでしょう。それがハッキリと分かるほどに濁りのない名録音。ぶっちゃけ、永久保存プレスCD化でも不思議はない素晴らしいサウンドなのです。しかし、本作はShadesレーベルのCDR盤。その要因は不安定なところがあるからです。極わずかながらマイクの接触音があったり、マイクの向きが変わったり、音色が変わったり。その１つひとつは極めて些細なものなのですが、決定打だったのは大ラス「Smoke On The Water」の途中で録音が終わってしまうこと（それでも４分以上録音されており、本当に「あとチョット！」なのですが……）。残念ながら、惜しいところで、万人向けの太鼓判を押すプレスCDには不向きだったのです。
とは言え、全編を貫く基本クオリティはプレス級。そのサウンドで描かれるのは、その後四半世紀にわたって続く“リッチー抜きDP”の存続を決定づけた運命のショウ。当時「リッチーがいなくちゃ意味がない」という当然すぎる先入観をひっくり返し、「これはこれで凄い」と言わしめた熱演が飛び出すのです。もちろん、初演だけにアンサンブルは石橋を叩くような堅実さもあり、1994年の欧州ツアーほどサトリアーニ色も強くはありません。しかし、キッチリと名曲の旨みを押さえながらサトリアーニならではの妙技フレーズがチラチラと顔を出す。しかも、そのフレーズにはWHITESNAKEのスティーヴ・ヴァイほどの「俺色に染め変える！」がなく、往年の名曲も「違和感はないけど、新鮮」という絶妙なサジ加減。フランス料理の名コックが作るイタリア料理も美味かった……そんな感じのライヴなのです。
しかも、本作はサトリアーニ初演だからこその激レア曲もある。それは「When A Blind Man Cries」と「Pictures Of Home」。前者は「70年代に演奏された」と言われるだけで音の証拠が現れず、後者は翌日の大阪が初演と思われてきたナンバー。現在では半定番化している超名曲の極初期生演奏が極上サウンドで味わえるのです。

これまでの傑作群でも当時の評判を裏付けるライヴが聴けましたが、本作は正真正銘の初演。激レアな「When A Blind Man Cries」「Pictures Of Home」だけでなく、歴史上１回だけの現場を素晴らしいサウンドで描いた銘品です。“サトリアーニDPのMAIDE IN JAPAN”コレクションを完璧にするだけでは収まらない歴史的なライヴアルバム。プレスCDではないものの、それ以上の感慨をくれる１本。どうぞ、存分にお楽しみください。
