“1972年”……もうこれだけで、心ときめく方もいらっしゃることでしょう。超名盤『MADE IN JAPAN』はもとより、『MACHINE HEAD』『WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE』も連発してた絶頂期中の絶頂期。ロック史上に燦然と輝く紫の伝説でも、ひときわ眩しい時期の生演奏が聴けるのです。先日も伝統の名録音をブラッシュアップした『MADE IN FLORIDA（Darker Than Blue 226）』もお届けしましたが、残念ながらアンコールは未収録でした。今回は、フルショウ×２回分で「日本公演の直前」を体験できる大決定盤なのです。
実は、この「日本公演の直前」が大きい。これまでの定説では“1972年”は日本公演のみが特出しており、ライヴ・パフォーマンスの頂点は“1970年-1971年”とされてきました。その原因は、録音が限られていたことにある。今まで“1972年物”というと、過密スケジュールに疲れてテンションの低い２-３月録音やイアン・ギランが脱退を決意した日本公演後のものがほとんどだったのです。ところが、そんな彼らが1970年ばりのテンションを取り戻した期間がごく短い間だけあった。文章だけでは分かりづらいでしょうから、日程で見直してみましょう。

これが『MACHINE HEAD』リリース以後、ギランが脱退を決意した「北米#4」までの日程です。ポイントは、リッチー・ブラックモアの肝炎（３月）と日本公演（８月）。先ほども述べた通り、過密スケジュールに疲弊したバンドは、インプロもお約束フレーズに頼るようなテンション低めのライヴになっていきましたが、３月にリッチーが肝炎に倒れると思わぬ休暇が舞い込む。そこで疲れが癒されたのか、リッチー復帰後から一気にテンションが復活。再出発への気迫に充ち満ちたライヴが来日公演まで続いていたのです。
奇跡は日本公演だけではなかった……実は、これは本作によって明らかになったこと。この好調期に録音がほとんどなく、今までは『MADE IN FLORIDA』で微かにうかがい知るしかなかった。それがフル２公演で聴けるようになったのです。
そんな歴史的発掘となった本作は、実に素晴らしいヴィンテージ・オーディエンス。間違ってもサウンドボードと比較するようなクオリティではありませんが、当時にありがちな「爆音・轟音の中から演奏を探す」タイプでは（決して！）ない。特にディスク３・４の「７月１日」は素晴らしくクリアで、５人の楽音がきっちりと捉えられ、オーディエンス録音では難しいベースランまでも克明。さらにギターの“鳴り”がなんとも素晴らしい。時代ごとに変化していったリッチー・サウンドですが、やはり70年代は格別。それが貫くように鋭いギランのシャウトと本邦にバトルしていく……。まさに“1970年”ばりのテンションでありながら『FIREBALL』『MACHINE HEAD』の豊富な名曲レパートリーがカラフルにショウを彩り、「６月30日」には「Lucille」さえも披露される。『MADE IN JAPAN』の奇跡が、また違った演奏で２公演も聴けるとは……。現在、世界中のマニアを狂わせているネット音源は音のダブりや劣化も見受けられましたが、最新マスタリングで可能な限り補正、シームレスで楽しめるよう万全を期しました。

かつて『MADE IN JAPAN』だけと思われていた“1972年の奇跡”。その母国編とも言うべき、DEEP PURPLEの至宝です。新発掘の衝撃もさることながら、その名演・熱演こそが眩しい４枚組。44年の時空を飛び越えたライヴアルバムの新名盤。今週末、あなたのお手元へお届けいたします。
