リハーサル・アルバムと言えば、先日リリースされた『DALLAS REHEARSALS 1983（Wardour-208）』も大好評を賜りましたが、前回がスティーヴィ・レイ・ヴォーンなら、今回はエイドリアン・ブリュー。どうもエイドリアンがメモ的に記録していたという卓直結録音が流出した音源なのです。実のところ、この録音自体は当時から有名で『OVERTURE & BEGINNERS』『REHEARSING SOUND & VISION』を筆頭に無数の既発を生んできましたが、本作はそれとはちょっと違う。もちろん、演奏／録音自体は同じですが、コア・コレクターの間では“DATバージョン”と呼ばれ、ブートレッグ音源とは一線を画す別格扱いのものなのです。
実際、そのクオリティは、いかなる既発とも比較にならない素晴らしさ。DATマスターからダイレクトにCD化された美音にはあらゆる劣化がなく、ヒスやヨレも一切見当たらない。流出サウンドボードならではのド直結サウンドが両耳から脳ミソに止めどなく流し込まれる。エイドリアンのギターはもちろん、特に素晴らしいのはボウイのヴォーカル。本番ではないリハーサルということもあり、そのリラックスした歌声は通常コンサートとは大きく違うプライヴェート感覚。この世に卓直結サウンドボードのライヴ盤が何本あろうとも、本作ほど親密に「歌いかけてくる感」「語りかけてくる感」に溢れた録音はないでしょう。しかも、細切れな練習パーツ集ではなく、ほとんどアレンジも完成された確認段階。超名曲群の1990年バージョンが極上サウンドでたっぷりと味わえるのです。
それだけのド直結感でありながら、それだけではないのだから素晴らしい。実のところ、卓直結サウンドボードはあまりのダイレクト感に味気なさも覚えてしまいガチなのですが、本作は違う。「卓直結のビビッド感」はしっかりとありながら、その楽音には豊かな“鳴り”までもが味わえる。恐らくアンサンブルの細部まで確認するためのリハーサル・スタジオの音響なのでしょう。極太・繊細でありながら、同時にとても美しい。ボウイの脳裏には観客の姿も浮かんではいたでしょうが、研ぎ澄まされた五感は音楽にだけ集中しきったリハーサル。その美空間の中に全身で浸りきれるアルバムなのです。
もちろん、最終形たる本番コンサートほどの完成度は望めませんが、貴重な“リハの表情”に極上サウンドで触れられる１本です。“作品”然としたスタジオ・アルバムやステージとは違う、音楽家ボウイの人生の１ページ。親密感とクオリティに彩られ、名曲たちのメロディが踊る……。ボウイのキャリアでも特別なステレオサウンドボード・アルバムの究極形。今週末、あなたのお手元にお届けいたします。
