The tour accompanying the album “Ziggy Stardust” started from 1972 and became a long-standing gait for 2 years since the next 1973. アルバム『ジギースターダスト』に伴うツアーは1972年から始まり翌1973年まで足掛け2年に渡る長大なものとなった。その間においてはセットリストの変遷があり、のみならずステージ衣装や演出はますます華美になり、最初と最後では全く異なるステージと変化していった。言うなれば1973年のジギーはこの時代のボウイの集大成ともいえる。このツアーの最終日が1973年7月3日であるので、本作が収録された5月3日というのはかなり終盤に当たる。

本作はボウイのジギースターダストツアーより、1973年5月29日イギリス北部の街ハンリー公演を収録している。ツアー終盤ということで非常に余裕ある演奏で、疾走する煌びやかなステージの魅力が存分に発揮されている名演である。オープニングの「Hang On To Yourself」から既に会場は熱く沸騰しているように感じられる。特に素晴らしいのはミックロンソンの冴えわたるギターであろう。まるで指が勝手に動くんよと言わんばかりの速弾きをこれでもかと披露している。そしてこの時期のボウイが特異なのは、このようなギター・スタイルのみならず、ステージにおいても様々な表情を見せている点にある。ミックロンソン大活躍の序盤、「Watch That Man」に続いて、ボウイはピアノをバックに「Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud」を歌う。今まで急騰した熱を冷ますかのような美しい演奏である。そしてそのまま「All The Young Dudes」、そして「Oh You Pretty Things」とメドレーで演奏するのである。この極端な音楽性の対比こそボウイの多様性を如実に表しているといえる。

そしてステージ中盤のハイライトは何と言っても「Moonage Daydream」である。じらすかのようなイントロから一気に「あの世界」に聴衆をグイグイ引き込んでいく。必死に歌うボウイのボーカルを覆い被せるようなギター音の洪水。後半のギター・ソロは完全なるインプロで、毎回異なるメロディが紡がれるコンサートの聴き所のひとつ。この日はフレーズに詰まる部分もあるが、伸びのある艶やかなソロは曲の世界観を見事に表現した絶品である。

ボウイはこのツアー中にアルバム『アラジンセイン』を発表している。ジギースターダストとアラジンセインという、同系統ながらも雰囲気の異なるそれぞれのアルバムよりチョイスした楽曲が違和感なく同居しているところに1973年ツアーの特徴がある。本作はそのジギースターダスト・ツアー終盤、1973年5月29日ハンリー公演を高音質で収録している。煌びやかと切なさと襲来と勃興と哀愁と黄昏。短いステージの間でドラマチックに展開するボウイの世界を是非堪能して欲しい。美しいピクチャー・ディスク仕様の永久保存がっちりプレス盤。
