“2016年の奇跡”を永遠に残すプレス２CDがリリース決定です。その“奇跡”の主役は、叙情ロックの代名詞CAMEL。発表当時から“16年ぶりとなる奇跡の来日”と話題になりましたが、本作はその初日「2016年５月18日なんばHatch公演」を収めたオーディエンス・アルバムです。まずは、そのポジションを確認してみましょう。

このように、今回のジャパンツアーは全４公演。そのうち、“奇跡のなんばHatch”は唯一の大阪公演でもあったのです。冒頭から「奇跡」を連呼しておりますが、少々陳腐とは承知しております。近年の目覚ましい機材の進歩のせいかド肝を抜かれる最新録音も多数あり、その度に“奇跡！”と喜ぶ始末。その一言ずつにウソ偽りはないものの、皆さまにとっては「奇跡」が軽く感じられるかも知れません。しかし、これは本当の奇跡なのです。
まず、来日自体が奇跡。今どき“16年ぶり”くらいは珍しくないのかもしれませんが、なにしろアンディ・ラティマーは1992年以来患っていた難病、骨髄線維症を克服しての復活なのです。そして、その演奏も奇跡。すでに各所で大絶賛の嵐となっていますが、正直に告白して「そりゃあ、来てくれただけも感動だもんね」と思っておりました。ところがどっこい、本作から流れ出る演奏ぶりは病など無関係に素晴らしい。それどころか、ベテラン・バンドに対してすっかり年齢をさっ引くクセが付いていたのを反省させられるほど。ネット上に溢れかえる「今が全盛じゃないか？」「泣けた」の声に納得……と言うより、それが当然にさえ思えてくるほど胸に迫るコンサートなのです。
そして第３の奇跡は、そんなライヴの一部始終を捉えきった本作のスーパー・サウンドです。録音したのは、かの“西日本最強テーパー”氏。毎度毎度、「西日本会場のスウィート・スポットを知り尽くしている」「現場より良い音で録る」等々と、言葉を尽くしてご紹介している名匠ですが、彼のコレクションでもズバ抜けたサウンド・クオリティ。今週は、彼の「理想」を体現したDEEP PURPLE『OSAKA 2016（Darker Than Blue 222/223）』も登場しますが、その超傑作を前にしても1/4歩も譲らない。毎度の事ながら不思議なのですが、会場は盛り上がっていながら“最強”氏の周囲には騒ぐ客が皆無で、まるで会場全体を神視線で俯瞰するような美しさも湛えているのです。その上で、“毎度”以上なのが楽音で、サウンドボードのようにダイレクトでありながら、現場感覚・空間感覚もたっぷり。繊細なアルペジオや泣きじゃくるギタートーンが会場を支配しているのが分かりながらも、細やかなタッチまでライン録音のように超・鮮明なのです。曲間など、本作の無音部によーく耳を澄ませていただきたい。極々うっすらと「シー」というヒスが聞こえることに気づかれると思います。もちろん、本作はアナログ・テープ録音ではなく最新機材のデジタル録音。つまり、このヒスは録音テープによるものではなく、現場のＰＡから漏れ出る極々わずかな電気ノイズ。本作はそんな超・微細な音までも拾い切り、スピーカーごしに届けてくれる超絶録音なのです。
そんなサウンドで捉えられたCAMELは、「息を飲む」と書くのさえ陳腐に感じるほどに美しい。メンバー４人のうち３人は16年前にも日本に来ましたが、思わぬ伏兵となったのは、新加入の鍵盤奏者ピーター・ジョーンズ。寡聞にして盲目であることしか知りませんでしたが、その天才的な閃きは驚きを超えた衝撃。流麗な演奏、繊細なタッチだけでなく、その音色選びのセンスひとつだけでオリジナル以上の感動を紡ぎ出してしまう。そんな本業を完璧以上にこなしながら、リードヴォーカルでも澄み切った歌声を響かせ、ウィンドシンセも操る大活躍。その上でアンディ、ピーター、コリン・バスによる３声ハーモニーが胸を締め付ける……。これほどまでのCAMELは聴いたことがなかった。現場を体験した方々から「今が全盛」と言われ、まさかと思いつつも「違う」とも言えない美世界が広がるのです。

音楽を愛する方なら美しい音楽に涙がこぼれた経験はあると思います。それがもし今日や昨日のことだったらとても素敵なことですが、最後に目頭が熱くなったのがいつか覚えていらっしゃらない方も多いのではないでしょうか。本作は、そんなひとときをくれるライヴアルバムなのです。それも、メンバーが難病を乗り越えた感動ではなく、純粋に“音楽の美しさ”・“音の美しさ”によって胸を熱くさせてくれる１本。もう二度とないと半ば覚悟していたアンディとの再会。そこには、今まであったことのなかった美しきCAMELの音世界がありました。そのすべてを“現場以上”と言われる極上サウンドで捉えきった銘品です。英国ロックが、プログレッシヴロックが40年以上の歳月を重ねて生み出した美世界。ぜひ、あなたにも。
