当店から久々にブルース・スプリングスティーンのライブ音源がリリースされます。今回は1980年の「THE RIVER」ツアーから11月1日のロス・アンジェルス・スポーツ・アリーナ公演を収録しています。当店からは以前にも「PHILADELPHIA SPECIAL」のような1980年ツアーのタイトルが存在していますが、今になって何故このLA公演が？と思われる方が多いことでしょう。ところが今回の音源、何とマイク・ミラードによって録音されたものなのです！夏の終わりから当店でもミラード録音によるボブ・ディランのタイトルをいくつかリリースしてまいりましたが、それらは1978年のライブを中心に録音していました。それにミラードはZEPを始めとしたイギリスのバンドを録音する傾向があり、ディランまで録音していたことには驚かされたものです。ところが1980年になってミラードがスプリングスティーンのライブまでも録音していたとは、それをも上回る衝撃の新事実です！
1980年11月と言えば、彼がもっとも愛したグループ、レッド・ツェッペリンのジョン・ボーナムが不慮の死を遂げたニュースが報じられてから一か月が過ぎ、まだ解散宣言は発表されていなかったものの、予定されていたアメリカ・ツアーが事実上不可能となった矢先でした。そのニュースを前に、彼もどんなアーティストのライブを録音しに行くべきか迷っていたと思われます。そんな時期にスプリングスティーンがLAでライブを四回行う（前半は三日連続）ことを聞きつけ、チケットが手に入った11月1日の公演に向かったのでしょう。ミラードと言えば70年代に数々の名音源が生み出されたLAフォーラムのイメージが強いのですが、スプリングスティーンが同会場を使用したのは78年のダークネス・ツアーで一回だけでした。それが80年にもなると彼の全米での人気が揺るぎないものとなったことから、LAフォーラムよりも大きなスポーツ・アリーナでの連続公演へとジャンプアップしています。その結果ミラードによる大物アーティストのLAライブ・レコーディングながら、今回はフォーラムではありません（笑）。

よってこれがミラードの初スプリングスティーン録音となったのですが、70年代後半に数々の大物ライブのコンサート録音で腕を磨いただけのことはあります。このツアーから途中で休憩が入る長丁場のスプリングスティーン・ライブを上手く録音してみせたのは流石としか言いようがありません。むしろ休憩を挟んだことでカセットの交換もなめらかに行えたのでしょう、曲がカットされるようなトラブルのない見事な録音状態でスプリングスティーンのマラソン・ライブを捉えています。
それに音質はミラード・スタンダードなパーフェクト・クオリティ。大会場での録音と言うこともあってディラン78音源のように演奏が迫りくる音像ではありませんが、あの「エディ」を彷彿とさせるような程よい距離感を保ちつつも、見事なまでのクリアネスはやはりミラード録音ならではのもの。オープニングから群を抜いたクリアーな音質は「Darkness On The Edge Of Town」辺りからは音像のオンな度合いもグッと増していよいよ極上レベルをキープ。「THE RIVER」ツアーの80年レグは要所要所に優良音源が存在しており、そのうちの一つが「PHILADELPHIA SPECIAL」だったのですが、一連のLA公演に関してはろくな音質のオーディエンス録音が存在していません。今回のリリースに当たってボーナスに他のLA公演からの収録を検討しましたが、どの日もミラード音源の足元にも及ばないB級録音ばかりということからボーナスとしての収録すら諦めざるをえないものでした。そんな不遇の80年LA公演の中で突如現れたミラード録音は文字通りの救世主と呼べるものです。

それに「THE RIVER」ツアー開始からちょうど一か月が経過したところですが、スプリングスティーンやE・ストリート・バンドはまだライブの構成を模索していたのでしょう、面白い演奏が随所で登場します。前日のライブからレパートリーに加わった「The Price You Pay」は引き続き初々しくも丁寧な演奏が素晴らしく、大晦日のナッソー辺りと聴き比べるとその雰囲気の違いが楽しめることでしょう。この曲の前に演奏された「Prove It All Night」はファンに大人気のダークネス・ツアー版ロング・イントロを復活させているのだからびっくりしてしまいます。「THE RIVER」ツアーでこのパターンが導入された日は非常に少なく、そこからもブルース達の模索ぶりが伺えます。休憩を挟んだ第二部も「Cadillac Ranch」は演奏を始める前にチャック・ベリーの「No Money Down」の触りから始めるというレアなパターン。それにアルバム「THE RIVER」からの「Fade Away」はこの日が初演奏というこれまたレアな場面です。そしてとどめはジャクソン・ブラウンが飛び入りしてスプリングスティーンとマイクを分け合う「Sweet Little Sixteen」という最高のハプニング！
そんな80年LA公演の中でも特にレアな内容と充実の演奏が聴けた日をミラードが極上音質で録音してくれたとは、ラッキーというしかありません。しかも今回登場した音源はファースト・ジェネレーション・マスターからという状態の良さも音質に貢献しています。ZEPライブを始めとした名音源を生み出した伝説のテーパー、マイク・ミラードによる知られざる音源が現れたとなっては、これを限定のプレスCDでリリースせずにどうしろと言うのでしょう。それだけでなくスプリングスティーンの80年ライブを捉えた衝撃の極上音源が登場したという意味でも、今回のリリースは絶対に聞き逃せません。今回も安心のミラード・クオリティをお楽しみください！
