のなかった曲を演奏することに対して積極的になり始めており、この年は変化の少ないセットリストに映ってしまったこと。それ以上にディラン本人が自伝で「やる気
を失い、引退を考えていた時期」であると告白したことが大きいのではないでしょうか。
彼が自伝で触れていたように、夏のアメリカ・ツアーでのハートブレーカーズの演奏は絶好調であり、ディランをしっかりと支える姿は頼もしいばかり。ところがディラン
本人は86年のツアーが進むにつれて自信を無くし、本気で引退を考えるようになったと証言しています。
そのせいか86年のツアーにおいてディランは新旧織り交ぜたカバー曲を大幅に取り入れており、それもまた自分の歌に対する消極性が現われた結果でした。まだ日
本公演の時のディランにはある種の懸命さが伝わってきたものですが、大々的に宣伝された夏のアメリカ・ツアーは、日によってただスケジュールを消化していくだけ
のようなショーがあったのは事実。86年のアメリカはサウンドボード録音も多く存在するのですが、それらの演奏がまた並のない淡々とした歌唱を聴かせるディランの
姿を浮き彫りにしてしまい、SBDという割に評価は高くありません。

そんなある種のスランプ期であった86年アメリカ・ツアーですが、それでも一際キラリと光る時期があるのです。それが今回の限定プレスCDリリースとなる7月のマディソ
ン・スクエア・ガーデン。MSGのあるニューヨークはディランが成功を求めてミネアポリスから飛び出して活動を始めた土地であり、アルバムのレコーディングが何度も行
われてきた、ディランにとっての拠点と呼べる土地でもあります。しかもMSGでのライブとなれば彼の気合が入らない訳がない。
86年のMSGギグは都合三回行われていたのですが、三日間すべてが86年アメリカ・ツアーの中では突出した出来のショーとしてマニアには評価されています。初日
の7月15日からして「大好きだよニューヨーク！」と叫んだディランのアッパーな様子が顕著だったのですが、三日目にて最終日となる今回の7月1日は三公演の中で
最長のショーとなっただけでなく、ずば抜けたアッパーなショーとして輝きを放っているのです。
実際にオープニングからディランは非常にテンションが高く、元気いっぱいに歌ってくれている。日本公演の頃からレパートリーとなり、86年アメリカでは頻繁に演奏
されたWe Three」、さらにストーンズ・マニアにはキースが歌うバージョンでおなじみ「We Had It All」などのカバー曲を情感たっぷりに歌ってくれます。これらを聴いただけで
も、ありきたりの86年音源など軽く吹き飛ばしてしまう熱気が伝わってくることでしょう。
一方でトム・ペティとハートブレーカーズのパートはまさに絶好調で会場の盛り上がりもアツい。ところがこの日のディランは一人の弾き語りパートがまた力強く、中
でも「Mr. Tambourine Man」はディランが素晴らしい歌を聴かせてくれるのです。

この最高のショーを捉えたオーディエンス録音の音質がまた素晴らしい。サウンドボード的な音像の近さよりも豊かな臨場感、さらに抜群のクリアネスが興奮の一
夜をリアルに蘇らせてくれる。先の弾き語りパートなどはディランの声も生々しいばかりに捉えられており、余計に演奏や歌の素晴らしさがはっきりと伝わってくるので
す。
このように音質と演奏の両方で充実した音源ですので、過去には「WITH A ROLLING STONE」というLPがリリースされてマニアにMSG三日目の名演ぶりを伝えてくれて
いたものですが、CDでのリリースは皆無。三日間の内、二日目が「CLEAN GUT GIG」というタイトルでリリースされていただけ。
こうした状況は一重に音源があまり広まっていない希少な存在であることが原因かと思われます。それどころか、ここ十年近くはネット上でも音源が登場していま
せん。そんなレアなオーディエンス録音を入手。原音を活かしつつもピッチのアジャストやノイズ除去を施して最高の状況に仕上げました。

そしてMSG三日間に関してはショーの中盤「Rainy Day Women # 12 & 35」以降、連日に渡ってロン・ウッドが飛び入りを果たしており、その姿を捉えた写真も多く残さ
れています。もっとも彼が目立つプレイをしている訳ではない（96年ハイドパークもそうでしたね）のですが、この日はメンバー紹介の所でロンがディランを紹介して会
場を沸かしており、彼の存在感も捉えられています。先に触れたLPのタイトルが「WITH A ROLLING STONE」と名付けられていたのには、そうした理由があったのです。
この最高にゴキゲンなショーの最後は何とファースト・アルバム収録の「House Of The Rising Sun」（ディランよりアニマルズでおなじみと言った方が良いでしょうが）という
サプライズで締めくくられるのも魅力。また先頃チャック・ベリーの訃報が伝えられたばかりですが、ペティとハートブレーカーズが「Bye Bye Johnny」をカバーしてくれてい
る点も聞き逃せません。
そうしたディスク三枚に及ぶアツくて長いショーの後にはフィラデルフィアとカンサス・シティからレアな演奏をボーナスとして収録。中でもご当地ソング「Kansas City」を初
めてライブで歌ってみせた場面や、86年では唯一の「Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat」といった貴重な演奏ばかりを収録。ところが、これらで聴かれるディランはMSGでのアツい
雰囲気とはまるで別人。おまけにボーナスがどれもまた非常な良好なオーディエンス録音ですので、なおさら力の入り具合の差が歴然。そんな違いがはっきり分かっ
てしまうほど、本編MSGの演奏は激アツ。1986年ツアーにおいて、これほどまでにディランがアッパーだったという伝説の一日のCD化が遂に実現します！
