 ミラードの別格なクオリティのオーディエンス録音はここ二十年の間でロック・ファンの間に定着し、しかも彼が若くして亡くなってしまったこともあり、彼の名声は正にカリスマといえる地位にまで登り詰めた感があります。そんな彼の音源と言えばレッド・ツェッペリンのLA公演が代表作と言え、さらにピンク・フロイドやローリング・ストーンズの公演も素晴らしい音質で記録してみせたことはこれまでに生み出されたさまざまなリリースで実証済み。そんな中でディランのライブまでも録音していたことは、それだけで彼のファンならずとも驚かされるほどのトピックとなりました。
 そして今回の音源が衝撃の発掘となった理由として「ミラードが同じ公演を二つのレコーダーで録音していた」ということです。未だかつて彼の音源で同日の別録音が存在した事実はありません。しかし彼の録音技術が進むにつれ、単なる一ファンによるオーディエンス録音という域を超えていたことが判明しています。もっとも有名なエピソードとしては、レコーダーを伴ったコンサート会場への入場をスムースに行うための策として生み出された「車椅子での来場」があり、さらには周囲を友人で固めることでアメリカのコンサートでありがちな騒がしさを過度に録音しないよう努めたことなどでしょう。
 しかし今回の発掘により「一公演で複数の録音」という衝撃の事実が発覚したのです!それにしても不思議ですよね。彼が他のアーティストの公演を録音した音源が同様の状態で発掘されたことはありません(もしZEP「エディ」音源のサブ録音が存在し、カットが入ってしまった「Ten Years Gone」の完全版が存在していたのなら…と夢想したくなります)。それに1978年という年、それはミラードの録音キャリアからすると後期に属するもの。
 そんな中でミラードが初めてディラン・ライブの録音を行ったものの、最初の二回はどちらも不完全収録が続いてしまうという、当時の彼からは考えられない録音の失敗が続きました。そこでLA最終日を録音するに当たり、ミラードはもう一つのレコーダーを用いて「今度こそは」の完全収録を目指したのではないか?ということが推測されるのです。
 しかもここが非常に興味深いのですが、前回の音源と今回の音源は確実に質感が異なります。結果から言ってしまえば、オンな音像の度合いは「LOS ANGELES 1978 LAST NIGHT: UNCIRCULATED MILLARD 1ST GEN」の勝ちだと言えるでしょう。その一方で二つの音源はまったく同じ歓声が聴こえることから、同じエリアから録音されたことも間違いありません。しかし、仮にミラードがレコーダーを自身の左右に置いて録音したのであれば、これほどの音質の違いは生まれないはず。ここはやはり、どちらかの音源はいわゆる「ミラードに同行した人物が録音した」とみて間違いのないものでしょう。その音像の違いは先週のギフト・リリースの時点でも推測しましたが、これだけはっきりと音質が違うのであれば、オルタネイト・レコーディングとして絶対に楽しめる音源であることを保証します。
 演奏が生々しいほどに近かった前回の音源は周りの盛り上がりもかなり大きなバランスで拾ってしまっていたのですが、今回の音源がそれよりもやや後方で録音された可能性は高く、同じ歓声も前回ほど目立たないバランス(逆に今回の方が耳障りに映る場面もあります…笑)となっています。それに演奏もジェントルなバランスが魅力であり「むしろこちらの方が落ち着いて聴きやすい」と感じられる方もいられることでしょう。その状態はちょうど前回の音源と、それを収録した「LOS ANGELES 1978 LAST NIGHT: UNCIRCULATED MILLARD 1ST GEN」の補填に使い、初回リリース分のCD-Rに付属した「LOS ANGELES 1978 LAST NIGHT ALTERNATE RECORDING」音源の間を行く音質だと言えるでしょう。
 こうしてミラードが複数の音源を残してみせたという衝撃の事実だけではなく、同日の公演で三種類のハイレベルな音源が存在するという事実も明らかとなったのです。これだけ音質が違うのであれば、先のリリースとの違いを是非とも聴き比べてみてください。特にヘッドフォンで聴くと全然違います!「Senor」以降は左チャンネルにテープ劣化に起因すると思われるハイ落ちの修正、前半と後半という実際のライブの二部構成に沿った収録、そして今回の音源の欠点であった唯一の楽曲の欠落であるフィナーレ「The Times They Are A-Changin’」を「LOS ANGELES 1978 LAST NIGHT: UNCIRCULATED MILLARD 1ST GEN」音源で補うことで「全編をミラードの神音源で聴き通せる」画期的なリリースにもなります。(更に、本盤では、テープチェンジによるものと思われるBallad Of A Thin Manの冒頭欠落も同じく「LOS ANGELES 1978 LAST NIGHT: UNCIRCULATED MILLARD 1ST GEN」で補正されており、この部分も曲間を含めると原音に対し10秒程長く収録されています。)今回もミラードならではのウルトラ・レコーディング、オルタネイト・バージョンは前回のタイトルと両方揃えて間違いなし!
