しかもこのアルバムですが、何と一日のセッションで一気にレコーディングされるという離れ業からまとめられています。後にも先にも、ディランが一日でアルバムを完成させてしまったのはこの時だけ。それはレコード会社にアルバムを早く提出してしまいたいという大人の事情が絡んでいたようですが、出来上がったアルバムを聴くとディランはそれに受けて立つと言った様子であり、お酒の力も借りて(歌声がそんな感じですよね)一気に録音してしまったようなのです。

しかしディランの声だけでなく、今回登場したセッション音源を聴くと完奏できなかったテイクも多々あり、それらの失敗テイクの中から聴くに値する演奏が昨年末に登場したように思えます。しかもテイクごとに雰囲気が違うのもディランのセッション音源ならではの楽しみですよね。中でもアルバムでは彼がピアノ弾き語りを初披露した「Black Crow Blues」が初期テイクではいつものギターで試されていたというサプライズ。この曲はセッションの終盤で録音されており、ここに収録された二つのテイクで煮詰まりを感じたディランが(もしかしたらプロデューサーの助言も受けて)ピアノでトライしてOKテイクをものにしたのかもしれません。
同じように「I Don’t Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have Met)」も初期のテイクではそれまでのアルバムのディランの雰囲気に近い感じで演奏されていたところ、アレンジを変えてもっと斬新な弾き語りに変えていたことが解るのは何とも面白いですよね。その点「I Shall Be Free No. 10」はセッションが終盤に近づいてディランもさすがにお疲れなご様子(笑)そんな状況で演奏を繰り返したものだから、テイクによってディランのテンションが全然違います。おまけにどのテイクも彼の歌にアップダウンがあったからでしょうか、結局二つのテイクをつなげてアルバムに収録するという有様でした。
実はこのセッションであの名曲「Mr. Tambourine Man」も録音されていたのですが、今回発掘されたすぐにカットされてしまうテイク1を始め、師匠でもあったジャック・エリオットまで加わって酔いが回ったルーズな演奏にしか聴こえません(苦笑)完奏したテイク2は現在リリース済ですが、ここではアセテートからのモノ・ミックスにて収録。よりウォーミーでアナログチックな質感でこのアウトテイクを楽しんでいただけることでしょう。

そのアセテートからの収録は「Mr. Tambourine~」に留まりません。昨年発掘された音源には未収録だった「All I Really Want To Do」もアセテートからの未編集コンプリート・バージョンにて収めています。この曲は1テイクでOKとなったようですが、ここでの完全版を聴くとディランが所々歌をつっかえており、それを切り刻んでアルバムのオープニング・ナンバーに仕立て上げたのだから驚きです。本来ならもっとテイクを重ねるべきところを、よくぞこのテイクで決めたものですよね。スタンダードといっても過言ではない「It Ain’t Me, Babe」はセッションの序盤で録音されていますが、今回発掘されたテイク1は途中で演奏が止まったのに続けようとしたという悪あがきバージョンが楽しめます(笑)。
こうして昨年末に登場した音源をまとめるだけに留まらず、以前から出回っていたアセテート音源も組み合わせ、よりコンプリートなアルバム別テイク集へとまとめ上げました。曲順に関しても実際の録音順ではなく、アルバムの曲順に沿った形でさらに解りやすく別テイクが続きます。もちろん音質は完璧ですが、やはり昨年の音源のLPを経由したスクラッチノイズは徹底的にクリーンナップ。ロイヤル・フェスティバル・ホールのライブと並んで誰もがCDで聴きたかったセッション音源の集大成がタイトル、ジャケ共にディラン・ファン満足間違いなしのパッケージに包まれた限定のプレスCDにて登場します!

もちろんレアな音源ですので流通した当時でアイテムはいくつもリリースされていましたが、それらは元がアセテートという性質上、通常のアナログ・ビニール以上に発せられるスクラッチノイズを抑え込んだイコライズで収録されたものばかりでした。それは今回の「ANOTHER TAKE」でも同様なのですが、実はそのイコライズなしのアセテートを素直に収録した状態を聴かれた方はあまり多くないのではないでしょうか。そこで今回の初回リリース分に付属するのがそのアセテート状態そのままのバージョンなのです。
確かにアセテートですのでスクラッチノイズは頻繁に入ってしまいますが、それでも生のままのウォーミーな音質ならではの魅力があるのも確か。むしろその質感が新鮮に聴こえるのではとすら思えてしまいます。それらに加えて「ANOTHER SIDE~」期だけでなく、エレクトリック絶頂期である「HIGHWAY 61~」のレア音源まで収録されているのですから、初回オンリーのギフトとは思えないほど充実した内容はディラン・ファン大満足のCD-Rことを保証します。ぜひ初回分でこのアセテート音源も一緒にお楽しみください。
