　ディランのライブでオープニングの選曲が予測不可能という時期が1989年から1992年にかけてありました。今までライブで演奏されたことがない曲でいきなり幕を開けるのは当たり前。それどころか他人のカバー曲をライブのオープニングに演奏してしまうサプライズにまで昇格してしまいました。1992年7月1日のランス公演も正にそんな一日でした。この日、ディランとバンドはフランスのランスで行われたロック・フェスティバルに出演しています。いわゆるディラン・ファンだけでなく、一般の音楽ファンなども集う催し。そうなれば一曲目はどんなディランのナンバーで幕を開けるのだろう？そう考えるのが当然というもの。ところがここでオープニングを飾ったのは「A Hazy Shade Of Winter」。そう、邦題「冬の散歩道」でおなじみ、サイモンとガーファンクルの名曲だったのです！
　ボブ・ディランのライブを観に来たというのに、まさかのサイモンとガーファンクルのカバー。ところがバンドの演奏は完璧で、見事にロック的な勢いに溢れた素晴らしい出来だからびっくり！そんな非の打ち所がない演奏をバックにディランがのらりくらりと歌ってみせたのですが、何故にライブの一曲目をS&Gの名曲で始めようとしたのかは未だに謎となっています。しかもこの演奏を聴いてもらえば解っていただけるかと思いますが、完璧にまとまった仕上がりですのでバンドがこの曲を真剣にリハーサルした上でこの日の披露となったことは間違いありません。ディラン、本気でやるつもりだったのですね（笑）。
　この後はいつものディラン・ナンバーが当然のように繰り広げられていますが、それがまた素晴らしいもの。しかもこの時期のバンドはツイン・ドラムというレアな構成だったのですが、そのドラマーが元キング・クリムゾンのイアン・ウォーレスにチャーリー・クインタナ（イジー・ストラドリンのジュジュ・ハウンズやソーシャル・ディストーションに在籍）というそうそうたるコンビでした。先のオープニング「A Hazy Shade Of Winter」にしてもイントロから二人のパワフルなドラミングが炸裂していることは一聴して感じてもらえることでしょう。
　そのオープニング以外の選曲も今となっては文句なしに名曲ばかりがズラリと並んでいます。オープニングこそ意表を突くものでしたが、それとて有名ナンバーのカバーでしたし、そこからこれだけ充実の選曲となれば当日の観客も大満足だったのではないでしょうか。先のツイン・ドラムというだけでなく、全体的に重量感のバンド・サウンドは演奏の尺が伸びる結果となり、アコースティックでの「Desolation Row」などは元々長い歌詞を持つ曲がその演奏と合わさって11分にも及んでいるのが面白いもの。その一方で「Love Minus Zero/No Limit」や「It Ain’t Me, Babe」をディランが弾き語りで聴かせてくれるのも今となっては大変に貴重な場面です。
　それにこの驚きのオープニングを捉えたオーディエンス録音ですが、この音質がまた素晴らしいクオリティだということも重要でしょう。それはオープニングでディランとバンドを紹介するアナウンスを聴かれただけでも別格の音質であることを確信されるはず。まさしくオンな音像に加えて抜群のクリアネス。こんな奇跡のオープニング・ライブを極上音質で収録した音源です、もちろん限定のプレスCDでのリリースが決定しました。あまりにもユニークなオープニングとなったディラン版「A Hazy Shade Of Winter」を完璧な音質でお楽しみください！
