ところがどうでしょう、この日を境にシナトラ・カバーは完全に姿を消して現在に至ります。こういっては身も蓋もないのですが、やはりディランには自身の名曲を歌ってほしい。まだアルバム「SHADOWS IN THE NIGHT」リリース時にはディランのシナトラぶりが新鮮に映ったものですが、これを続けられてもね…と思っていたところから今年のシナトラ削減傾向はファンからすると嬉しくないはずがありません。さらにここ二年程、セットリストにもちょこちょこと変動が起きている点がマニアにとっては気になるところ。こうした状況の中アフター・フジロックの動向をドキュメントするリリース、今週は最新のオーストラリア公演の登場です。

今回リリースされる二タイトルですが、どちらも「The Caretaker」を名乗る人物がネット上に公開してくれたオーディエンス録音。音質は大変に良好で音像はオンなバランス、中でもトニー・ガーニエとジョージ・リセリーのリズム隊が叩き出す強靭なローを過不足なく捉えた迫力が素晴らしい。もしプレスCDでリリースされたとしても何ら違和感のないクオリティ、と言えばどれほどの高音質か想像してもらえるかと。
このアデレードに関して驚かされるのは、そのキレッキレなディランのテンション。「Highway 61 Revisited」や「Honest With Me」といった激しいロック・アレンジが施されたナンバーではエンジン全開。おまけにリセリーがドラムでディランのシャウトに合わせたパッセージを叩くという展開が実に面白い。円熟の境地に向かうかと思われたシナトラ・カバーの日々から一転、正に「攻め」のディランが聞かれる。中でも「Honest With Me」に施されたギター・リフはまるでビーチ・ボーイズの「Dance, Dance, Dance」に似たフレーズであり、それでいて非常にハードな演奏となっているのが実に新鮮。

今回リリースされる「The Caretaker」による録音はどれも録音環境が抜群で、周囲の観客のチャットがほとんど入らない、静かで演奏をじっくりと聞き込める状態は正に優等生オーディエンス録音。ところがテンポの速いギター・リフをチャーリー・セクストンが弾いたアレンジが新鮮な「Thunder On The Mountain」に興奮を抑えきれなくなったのか、この曲以降でファンの声が入ってしまいますが、それとて微塵なもの。これほどハードな演奏を目の当たりにしたらじっとしてなんかいられない…そんな雰囲気がむしろ伝わってくるのです。
とどめは最後までテンションの高いディラン。フジロック以降のディランが再びロックに加速している様子を最高の音質で捉えた最高のショーだとも言える。そんな絶好調の彼とがっぷり四つに向き合うリセリーのドラムも強烈。ディラン・バンド加入当時に腱鞘炎を患って一時離脱を余儀なくされたのも今は昔。盤石のドラマーぶりも絶妙な音質で楽しめ、なおかつ彼とディランの間で起きたケミストリーがこの日の演奏を最高の出来にしてくれたのではないでしょうか。この調子でこれからもロックし続けてほしいと願わずにはいられません。いやー、おじいちゃん元気です。
