本日5月17日は奇しくもボブ・ディランが1966年にマンチェスターの観客に向かって「I don’t believe you, you’re liar!」と発して50周年となる日でありますが、今週も当店はゴキゲンなディラン・タイトルが登場。当店は最近、2001年来日公演最高の名演と呼ばれる3月6日の大阪初日を「THE BEST SHOW」としてリリースしたところですが、今回は同じ2001年ジャパン・ツアーからの、新たな音源を限定のプレスCDにてリリースいたします。先の「THE BEST SHOW」や一昨年リリースされた「2001: A FORUM ODESSEY」といった具合に、これまでのタイトルはツアー中盤のライブ・ショウにリリースが集中していた感がありました。しかし今回はツアー初日であった2月25日の大宮公演なのです。この日は「2001: A～」の東京国際フォーラム公演と同様に、一切のアイテムが存在しなかった日。音源はとうの昔にトレーダー間に広まっていたのですが、それらが触れられることなく、むしろ見過ごされていたと言っても過言ではありません。
しかも今回のリリースに際して使用したオーディエンス録音ですが、そのようなトレーダー間にも広まっていなかった、当店が独自に入手した音源を使用した上での限定プレスとなっているのです。同じように独自入手音源を使用した「THE BEST SHOW」（＊「FORUM ODESSEY」はネット音源）がそうだったように、今回の大宮ショウを収録した独自音源の音質は掛け値なしに極上。それどころか、これまで当店がリリースしてきた2001年来日公演アイテムの中においても最高クオリティの音質を保証します！大宮ソニック・シティという程よいキャパシティー（2,000人）の会場ならではのウォーミーな臨場感と、何よりもオンな音像。それらを余すところなく捉えてくれた今回の音源。これほどまでに極上クオリティを誇るオーディエンス録音をプレスCDでリリースしない手はありません。とにかく抜群な音質だけでも、今回のリリースはすべてのディラン・マニアに自信を持っておすすめいたします。

この大宮公演に関しては、この日が2001年のツアー初日であるという大きなトピックをも兼ね備えていた日。1997年以来となる来日公演の初日ステージで、ディランとバンドはどんなサウンドを鳴らしてくれるのか…。そんなファンの胸の高鳴りをも聴こえてきそうなほどに見事なクリアネスも今回の音源の大きな魅力。前年のツアーで当時のライブ構成が完成していたことから、この日も2000年ツアーのパターンを踏襲したものであることが容易に予想できたもの。それを裏付けるように、この日のオープニングは「Roving Gambler」というトラディショナル・フォークのカバー。この曲のようなカバーから幕開けするパターンが当時のレギュラー・オープニングとなっていたのです。
その後は立て続けに往年の名曲が演奏されるという、今になって振り返るとゴージャスとしか言いようのない展開。先日の来日公演では、内心往年の名曲を期待しつつも、ほとんど取り上げられなかったショウを前に「昔の曲をやらなかったけど、カッコよかった」的な意見に留まる一般リスナーの感想がSNS上に少なからず飛び交っていましたが、この頃のディランは文字通り「昔の曲をやりまくって」くれたものです。当時はそれが当たり前だと思っていたものですが、今になってみると本当に豪華な選曲。特にこの日のディラン60年代キャリアを鳥瞰するかのようなセットリストはよだれモノ。マニアが喜ぶような選曲の「THE BEST SHOW」、65年から66年にかけての黄金期の曲が多かった「FORUM ODESSEY」とも違う60年代クラシックスばかりが演奏されるこの日のメニュー…もはやベスト・アルバム状態かと。
中でも「HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED」を締めくくった大作「Desolation Row」が日本のステージで初めて披露された日。前年のツアーからレギュラーに演奏されていたレパートリーですので、この日聴かれる可能性は非常に高かったのですが、だからこそ遂に聴くことが出来た感動は大きかったもの。それ以上に前年のツアーからライブ・レパートリー入りして世界中のマニアを驚かせた「Country Pie」や「If Dogs Run Free」といったレア・ナンバーを日本で聴くことが出来たのもこの日が最初。60年代のクラシックス、メジャー・ソングだけに留まらない選曲はこの日の大きな魅力でした。おまけに「Country Pie」などは2001年の日本公演において数回の披露に留まっただけに、なおさらレアな場面だと言えるでしょう。
そして完全なるハードロックと化した「Drifter’s Escape」当時ならではのアレンジもインパクト大ですが、この日最高の演奏は「Maggie’s Farm」。そのアッパーなテンションはとてもツアー初日で2001年最初のライブだとは思えません。このようにツアー初日から既にプレイ・クオリティが異常とも言えるくらいのレベルだったことを再認識させれくれるであろう、衝撃のオーディエンス・マスター仕様のリアル・ライブなアルバム。演奏が最高な「THE BEST SHOW」、選曲が魅力的な「FORUM ODESSEY」、そして2001年ツアー屈指の高音質を誇る第三の名盤がここに誕生です！
