BLACK SABBATH with Tony Martin and Cozy Powell tried to “HEADLESS CROSS” and tried to return to his home country ’99 British tour started from the Birmingham performance on August 31, until the Bristol performance on September 11 9 performances were held. However, the sound source that captured the peak of the British tour in ’99 is one of the sound sources that fans want to listen to. Compared with the Sheffield performance, the sound image which contained the air feeling more than the venue fitted perfectly with the sound at that time, “HEADLESS CROSS” which was abundant in a fantastic mood with melody. Nevertheless, it seems that every audience will be pleasantly surprised at what sounds are clearly outstanding and the sounds blessed with Neil Murray’s bass that can be grasped from the base, “Which is a bonus!”
Fans who came to Hammersmith from the opening “The Gates Of Hell” can not wait “a mood. At the beginning of “Headless Cross”, there is a wonderful excitement of the scene where Koji’s drums intaglinate the intros with plenty of plenty. Martin’s vocals are the greatest reminders of America tours that showed tremendous performance and the ’87 year live at ‘ETERNAL IDOL’. “Neon Kights” to listen to the powerful performance as a band is a sudden listening place! The ensemble of the last “Heaven And Hell” and “Paranoid”, the venue and the band become one and it will complete spectacular live picture scrolls perfectly! The excitement of the venue that can be confirmed with this recording, the performance of the band tightened to tight is truly wonderful. トニー・マーティンとコージー・パウエルを擁するBLACK SABBATHが「HEADLESS CROSS」を引っ提げて母国へ凱旋した’89年イギリスツアーは、8月31日のバーミンガム公演からスタートし、9月11日のブリストル公演まで全9公演が行われました。その中でもハイライトとなったのは、9月9日と10日に伝統の”ハマースミス・オデオン”で2Daysを行ったロンドン公演。本作はその初日に当たる9月9日の模様を、マスター・テープより入念なリマスターの上で音盤化した、SABBATHファン必聴の一本です。
このショウの模様は10年ほど昔に「NOW FEAR ARISE IN LONDON」（Langley-049）としてリリースされた事がありました。もとより優秀なオーディエンス録音はファンの間で評判となり、まだ’89年のライヴ音源が乏しかった当時は「マンチェスター公演の放送ソースと並ぶ音源」としてマニアの強い支持を受けていました。その後は「HEADLESS IN VIENNA」など決定的なアイテムが登場した事や、10年もの年月が経過して完売・廃盤となった事から、最近では入手しづらいアイテムとなっていました。しかし’89年イギリスツアーのピークを収めた音源は、やはりファンにとって聴きたい音源のひとつ。シェフィールド公演と較べて会場の空気感をより含んだ音像は、メロディアスで幻想的なムードに富んでいた「HEADLESS CROSS」当時のサウンドにぴったりとフィット。それでいて抜群にクリアな見通しと、ニール・マーレイのベースまで掴み取れる分離感に恵まれたサウンドには、いかなる聴き手も「これがボーナスなのか！」と驚き喜ぶ事でしょう。
オープニングの「The Gates Of Hell」からハマースミスに詰め掛けたファンは「待ちきれない」というムード。「Headless Cross」の冒頭、コージーのドラムが威厳たっぷりにイントロを刻む場面の盛り上がりは素晴らしいものがあります。マーティンのヴォーカルは凄まじいパフォーマンスを見せたアメリカツアーや、「ETERNAL IDOL」での’87年ライヴを思い出させる絶好調ぶり。バンド一体でパワフルな演奏を聴かせる「Neon Kights」はいきなりの聴き所です！ 続く「Children Of The Sea」や「Die Young」でもマーティンはロニーに迫る歌唱を披露しており、聴き手は彼の実力を改めて思い知らされるでしょう。それぞれの力量はもちろん、まとまりにも優れたメンバーを得て、アイオミのギターも充実一途です。「When Death Calls」でのスピーディでスリリングなソロ、「War Pigs」で壮大な世界観を描き出すフレージングは、まさに並ぶ者無き貫禄を感じます。バンドの良さを凝縮したような「The Shining」・「Devil & Daughter」は、’89年ツアーでも屈指のテイクだと言えるでしょう！ ライヴの後半は「Iron Man」に「Children Of The Grave」とオジー時代のクラシックがメドレー演奏されます。本録音では会場の音響が理想的な形で活かされており、「Iron Man」のリフはよりヘヴィに、「Children Of The Grave」イントロはさらに荘厳に、それぞれの曲想をより引き立てています。ラストの「Heaven And Hell」そして「Paranoid」の組曲は、会場とバンドがひとつになって、壮大なライヴ絵巻を見事に完結させます！ 本録音で確認できる会場の盛り上がり、タイトに引き締まったバンドの演奏は本当に素晴らしいの一言。観客とバンドの双方をこれほど熱くさせるのは、まさに”ハマースミス・オデオン”の伝統と格式があればこそでしょう！マーティン時代のSABBATHが眩しく輝いていた当時のライヴを、この機会にぜひお楽しみください！
