とんでもなく歴史的で圧倒的で衝撃的で奇跡的な大発掘です！　BLACK SABBATH最古のデビュー前ライヴを伝えるオープンリール・マスターが登場してしまいました。“デビュー前”と言っても、彼らは前身バンドのEARTHではなく、紛れもなくBLACK SABBATHです。本作が記録されたのは、「1969年11月16日ダムフリース公演」で、録音したのはアレックス・ウィルソンなる人物。彼らの最初のライヴは“1969年８月30日”で、デビューアルバム「BLACK SABBATH」の録音が“1969年10月16日リージェント・サウンド・スタジオ（12日説・17日説もあり）”。つまり、本作は“EARTH”から“BLACK SABBATH”に名前を変えてから２ヶ月半後、あの伝説的なファーストアルバムの録音からちょうど１ヶ月後にあたるクラブ・ギグなのです。以前から「Early Morning School（もしくはEarly One Morning Blues）」の１曲だけが知られていたライヴですが、この度、約１時間のマスターが発掘されたのです。冒頭から「Black Sabbath」も演奏されています（残念ながら前半パートは録音されていません）し、「N.I.B.」も仮歌詞バージョン（オジー・オズボーンは正規録音が済んでいても仮歌詞で歌うんですよね……）ですし、「Behind The Wall Of Sleep」、さらにはライヴテイク初登場の「The Warning」を18分もの長大バージョンで演奏しているのです！
今までもデビュー作ツアーの音源やバンドの極初期録音はいくつかありましたが、そのほとんどがセカンドアルバム「PARANOID」の制作前後。未完成バージョンであったとしても、「War Pigs」や「Fairies Wear Boots」が姿を見せており、後に続くコンサートの原型はできていました。ところが！　本作はそんな「War Pigs」「Fairies Wear Boots」「Paranoid」の痕跡さえもない超・極初期。後のライヴでは考えられない超・超レアソングがたんまりと演奏されているのです。THE AYNSLEY DUNBAR RETALIATIONのカバー「The Warning」だけでも目も眩むようほどの激レアぶりですが、まだまだ序の口。EARTHのデモテイクがヒストリービデオ「BLACK SABBATH STORY – VOLUME 1」で10秒足らず使われただけの「Song For Jim」、JEFF BECK GROUPでもお馴染みなバディ・ガイの「Let Me Love You Baby」、エルモア・ジェイムズの改作「Early Morning School」、オリジナルのブルース曲「Blue Blood Man」……もう初めて聴くのは当たり前、それどころか演奏していたことさえ知られていなかったレパートリーが次から次へと飛び出してくる。
BLACK SABBATHは、この時期のバンドにしては珍しいほど、ライヴでもオリジナル重視のバンドで、当時のカバーソングといえば、ジョークで演奏したBEAT CLUBの「Blue Suede Shoes」くらいしか残っていませんでした。今までインタビューで「ブルースのカバーなんかを演奏していたよ」とは言っていましたが、その現物を聴くことができようとは……。BLACK SABBATHを深く追究していればいるほど、１曲ごとに「なんだ、この曲は!?」とド肝を抜かれるのです。
しかも、そんな激レア・ライヴを記録したサウンドもまた実に、実に素晴らしい。もちろん「まるでサウンドボード」「オフィシャル超え！」とは申せませんが、“爆音の中から楽音を探す”というレベルでは（まったく！）ない。なにしろ現場となった“Rugman’s Youth Club”に居合わせた観客は、80人ほど（！）だったそうですが、それだけに大歓声が巻き起こるわけでもなく、小さなクラブの密室感もたっぷり。そこで回されたオープン・リールに、60年代のセミプロバンドとは信じがたいほどクリアさとダイレクト感が吹き込まれたのもうなずけるというものです。ドラムソロこそオーバーピークになりますが、デビュー後のオーディエンス録音でも、ここまでの高音質盤はそうそうありません。現在、ネットでも“話題”というレベルを超えた衝撃が走っている真っ最中ですが、本作は、そのマスターの鮮度はそのままに、ノイズを緩和し、現代オーディオ機器の再生に最適となるバランスにマスタリングしました。
そのサウンドで轟くライヴは、まさにデビュー作「BLACK SABBATH」Ｂ面の世界。カバー曲が大量にありますが、オリジナルとは似ても似つかず、生々しく荒削りながらドゥーミーで芳醇なジャムがてんこ盛り。ファストで攻撃的なブルースやブギも丸っきりのBLACK SABBATH印です。そして、何よりも衝撃的なのは「Song For Jim」。トニー・アイオミがギターを弾かず、イアン・アンダーソンばりのフルートを大フィーチュアしているのです！　もちろん、ギターを弾いてもキレッキレ。ラストの「Blue Blooded Man」では、アルヴィン・リーごしにジャンゴ・ラインハルトの姿が透けてくるフレーズを繰り出してくるのです。

“歴史的意義”。いかにも堅苦しくて小難しそうな言葉なので使いたくないのですが、本作の重みの前には躊躇していられない。このあまりに巨大な意義は大スペクタクルの域にまで達し、聴くだけで胸が潰れそうです。なにしろ、デビュー作「BLACK SABBATH」は「あらゆるヘヴィミュージック誕生の瞬間」とさえ称され、60年代末に気を吐いていた幾多のホワイトブルースとはまるで違う突然変異でした。どうやって、なんの必然性があってあのサバス・サウンドが生まれたのか。本作は、その歴史の重力特異点を超リアルに証言してくれる逸品中の逸品。まさにヘヴィミュージックのビッグバンを記録した１枚なのです。
