狂乱のツアーから解放されたビートルズは、スタジオにこもって、ライヴ演奏を前提としないレコーディングに専念することになる。その兆候は『ラバーソウル』や『リボルバー』あたりから顕著に見られるようになってはいたものの、その究極の形が結集することとなる。それが『サージェント・ペパーズ』であった。ただライヴ活動を休止しただけではない。その代償を払うだけのスタジオの粋を集めたレコードを作らないと休止した意味がない。そうして完成したアルバムは、ライヴを行なわないという代償を補って有り余る世紀の名盤として世に出たのである。

『サージェント・ペパーズ』はビートルズが架空のバンドを名乗り、架空のライヴを行なうというコンセプトが掲げられた。そのため『サージェント・ペパーズ』と『ウィズ・ア・リトル・ヘルプ』は聴衆の歓声で繋げられ、また「ウィズイン・ユー」のエンディングにも聴衆のざわめき、また「サージェント・リプライズ」でも歓声が被せられているなど、まさに架空のライヴを模した形式となっている。ちなみに「ア・デイ・イン・ザ・ライフ」はアンコール、あるいはカーテンコールの意味合いが込められている。これは主にポールの着想による。このアルバムはリリース当初から話題となり、従来のロックのアルバムの概念から大きく逸脱した音楽性は喧々諤々の議論を巻き起こした。スリーヴには歌詞が印刷されており、その意味解釈を深く求める者あり（LSDはその象徴的な出来事だろう）、ジミヘンはリリースされてすぐにライヴでカバー、そして1987年にCD化された際にも『サージェント・ペパーズ』のみ豪華な装丁が加えられるなど、リリース当時から現在に至るまで、我々ファンにとっても、またビートルズにとっても、特別なアルバムであることが伺える。

ちょうどサージェント・ペパーズがリリースされてから四半世紀、25周年の記念にあたる1992年にアルバム「サージェント・ペパーズ」の製作過程に迫るドキュメンタリーが制作された。これがただのドキュメンタリーではなく、ジョージ・マーティンがスタジオで当時のレコーディング・テープを再生しながら回想するという、実際の蔵出し音源を使用しての解説なのである。あるトラックを抽出して曲に関するエピソードを披露するという、ファンにはたまらない内容となっている。また出演者はジョージ・マーティンだけではなく、1992年当時の若々しいポールとリンゴ、そしてジョージが、それぞれアルバム『サージェント・ペパーズ』に関してのインタビューに答えているのである。またビーチボーイズのブライアン・ウィルソンは『ラバーソウル』を聴いて非常に衝撃を受けた。これを凌駕するアルバムを作らねばならない、そういう対抗意識から『ペット・サウンズ』を作り上げた。しかしそれを受けビートルズはさらに上を行く『サージェント・ペパーズ』をリリース、ブライアンは完全に打ちのめされてしまう。本作には、そのブライアン・ウィルソンのインタビューも収録されている。

この後アンソロジーもあり、また既に放送からさらに25年以上経過しているにも関わらず、『サージェント・ペパーズ』に関してはこれを超えるドキュメンタリーはいまだ存在しないだろう。本作はこの史上最高のドキュメンタリー「MAKING OF SGT. PEPPER」を高画質で収録している。そして嬉しいことに日本語字幕がついているので、英語が堪能でなくとも内容が理解できるようになっている。これは日本人へ向けてというよりも、日本語字幕が入ったものが最も画質が良いという、たまたまの理由による。

【CD】
ちょうどドキュメンタリー映像「MAKING OF SGT. PEPPER」では、ジョージ・マーティンが実際にミキシング卓の前で、それぞれ分離した楽器音を出して、レコーディング当時を回想しつつ、曲ごとの解説を行なっている。まさにそのセパレートした音をそれぞれ聴くのに最適ということで、CD「SGT. PEPPER’S MULTI TRACK SEPARATED」をカップリングしている。ゲームのロックバンドの音ではなく、流出したマルチトラックをそのまま各トラックを4曲分、それぞれ分離した形で収録している。これは2007年9月末に突如流出して、国内外のマニアの間で話題となった『サージェント・ペパーズ』のマルチトラックである。ドキュメンタリーの中でジョージ・マーティンが再生していた、まさにその音になる。

『サージェント･ペパーズ』というアルバムはその複雑さに反し、わずか4トラックを駆使してレコーディングされたのは有名だが、 ここに収録されている4曲「サージェント･ペパーズ」「ウィズ･ア･リトル･ヘルプ」「シーズ･リーヴィング･ホーム」「ア･デイ･イン･ザ･ライフ」のそれぞれ最終ミックスダウン前の4トラックを、4×4で16トラックが、 レコーディング過程のそのままの形で聴くことができる。それぞれ曲別のトラックの内容は以下の通り。

「SGT. 【MAKING OF SGT. PEPPER】
早いもので『サージェント・ペパーズ』がリリースされてから半世紀が経過しようとしている。ビートルズのメンバーは半分になり、制作指揮をとったポールも既に後期高齢者である。しかしアルバム『サージェント・ペパーズ』は時代に色褪せるどころか、時代を経てなお輝きを増す特別な存在感を放っている。旗帯アナログの解説には「音楽的進歩はここで完全に止まった。これ以上のものは未来永劫ないであろう」というような内容が書いてあったと記憶している。それは言い過ぎだろうが、いずれにせよ『サージェント・ペパーズ』が世紀の名盤であり、およそ人類が創造した芸術の中でも最高の物のひとつであることは間違いない。その名盤の製作過程を、ジョンを除くビートルズのメンバー自身の言葉で語られる、またプロデューサーのジョージ・マーティンが、実際のレコーディング・テープを再生しながら解説をしてくれる、まさに歴史的なドキュメンタリーといえるだろう。しかも本作は日本語字幕付きである。美しいピクチャー・ディスク仕様の永久保存がっちりプレス盤。
