日本の文化を変えるほどに注目を集めたビートルズの来日です、羽田空港への到着からピンクのキャデラックに乗って東京ヒルトン・ホテル（キャピトル東急ホテル）への投宿までだけでも多くの映像が残されていますが、今回はそれらを丹念に調べ上げた上で時系列に沿って収録。これによって文字通りビートルズの日本到着がリアルにドキュメントされるようになったのです。DC-8松島号から登場しタラップを降りてピンクのキャデラックへ乗るまでの様子は、ニュース用の撮影であるために各アングルの映像は断片しか残っておらず、様々な既発盤では飛び飛びの断片、もしくは同じシーンをアングルごとに繰り返し収録するというものしかありませんでした。本盤では各アングルを一から調べ直し、最良のソースを新たにビデオマスターから起こし時系列順に再構築されているのです。さらには白黒とカラーそれぞれの現存する映像をマルチスクリーンにして見比べられるのだから面白い。
来日記者会見の映像に関しては既にその全貌が収録されている音源を元に継ぎ接ぎ編集した最長版もありますが、今回はあの間延びするほど長い記者会見のすべてを収録するのではなく映像として残っている部分のみに焦点を当て、ここでも近年アメリカの通信社がアーカイブしているタイムコードなしの新たなフィルムソース(この映像自体はYouTubeでも登場済み)をフィーチャーし、なおかつやり取りに日本語字幕が付いたことで極めて見やすいドキュメントとなっています。日本語と英語の壁に阻まれたコミュニケーションの要領の悪さなどが指摘されがちなこの時の記者会見ですが、その一方で他の国とはまったく別次元の静粛な雰囲気にビートルズが（いい意味で）驚いている様子も伝わってきます。他の国の記者会見では騒がしい中で行われるのが当たり前だったのだからなおさらかと。

ライブ初日の会場の様子もこれまでに出回っていた映像を時系列に沿った検証と編集によって、まるで自分が武道館の外で開場を待っているかのような気分に浸れますし、当時から指摘されていた異常に厳戒な警備ぶりも新たな映像と共に実感できます。お堀にまで出動した警備はもちろんですが、救護班や救急車までスタンバイしていた様子からも常軌を逸した警備ぶりがリアルにドキュメントされています。それに何と言っても1960年代の日本らしさが捉えられている。
おなじみ6月30日のライブ映像に関しても、今までに公開されている断片的な前座の映像から丁寧にまとめています。メインとなっているのは1978年の放送ですが、それ自体が過去に当店もリリースしたバージョンよりも画質の良いベータマックス録画によるアッパー版の別ソースを使用、そこに以前から出回っている前座の音源を緻密に組み合わせています。残念ながら翌日ほどステージの様子が垣間見られませんが、出演アーティストの一人などは衣装が違っていたり、あるいはグループの演奏時のカメラアングルが翌日とまったく違っていたことがはっきりと解ります。
ビートルズのステージに関しては冒頭にも記しましたように、二年前に登場したHMC版を元にリマスター。特に音声に関してはHMC版はDVD化の際に音声が圧縮されてしまっていたためモコモコした音になっていたのに対し、今回はベストソースへと差し替えたことで演奏の分離が良くなってなおかつナチュラルですっきりとした音質となっています。さらには1990年頃にテレビで紹介されたステージに向かう前のビートルズを捉えた8mmも抜かりなく時系列に沿ってつないでおり、初めてしかるべき位置で観られるようになりました。

1966年の本チャン放送に使われた7月1日に関しても、メインのライブ映像に関してはこちらもHMC版をベースにしていますが、これまた画質を調整したことで自然でなおかつ鮮やかな画質のアッパー版へと生まれ変わっています。特に前座の途中からShe’s A Womanにかけて映像がどんどん暗くなってしまい色合いも不安定になる欠点がマスターにあり、HMC版もそのままの状態で収録されていました。今回はそれらの欠点を全て修正し、全編に渡り解像度もアップいたしました。それはまるで霧が晴れたかのよう。しかし、それ以上に特筆すべきは、2枚目のディスクは1966年7月1日の夜に放送された当時の番組プログラムを再現した内容となっていること。
ライブが始まる前のドキュメントは6月30日のライブがテレビ放送、あるいはビデオ・ソフト化された際にも収録されていましたが、その際に手を加えられていた箇所を全てレストアし1966年当時のバージョンへと復元。そして近年1966年当時の本放送が録画された貴重な白黒映像の断片がYouTubeに登場しましたが、そこで見られたCMを組み合わせることによって、さらにリアルな1966年放送版を蘇らせたのです。HMC版では前座の最後がフェードアウトしていましたが本盤は本放送ソースを繋ぎ合わせたことでCMに切り替わる寸前まで見られるようになった点も注目です。個人的な話になりますが、私の母親などは両親が飲食を営んでいた友達の店に行ってカラー放送で観たと当時の体験を証言していましたが、その時に観たであろうリアルタイム感が2018年に追体験できてしまう！
また離日後からイギリスに帰国（厳密には悪夢のマニラ公演が間にありましたが）した様子や、ジョージがマニラと比べて日本は素晴らしかった…と語る様子も画質の良い新ソースから収録し、なおかつ時系列にまとめています。つまり、二枚目のディスクに関しても7月1日のライブから離日までのビートルズの様子をかつてないほどにドキュメントしました。

そしてエクストラ・ディスクに関しては近年マニアの間でおなじみとなりつつあるドキュメンタリー「現代の主役 ビートルズ！」を収録。ここまでビートルズ来日直前の様子を伝えてくれる秀逸なドキュメントの映像が破棄されずに残されていたことに驚きを禁じ得ません。来日30周年の1996年に放送されたこともあって画質は最高。1966年の日本がビートルズを迎える様子がリアルに捉えられています。
さらに一枚目のディスクとは別に6月30日のライブを収録。こちらは80年代にVHSリリースされていたバージョンからの収録ですので、演奏の初めに曲名が（やや大きめな）フォントでクレジットされているのも今となっては懐かしい。しかし何と言っても非常にソフトでナチュラルな1966年のカラー・ビデオっぽい画質、むしろこちらの方が好感を持てるという方も少なくないのでは。またHMC版では映像の下と右側がカットされ少しばかりトリミングされている状態ですが、こちらはオリジナルテープのそのままの画角でフルサイズの収録という相違点もあります。音声に関してもイコライズ等は一切行っていないため、オリジナルテープそのままのディスク１よりもナチュラルな音がこちらではお楽しみいただけます。そもそも80年代に我々はこれを当たり前のように見ていたものですね。
こうして7月1日ライブに関しては1966年の放送の懐かしさを初めて味わせてくれる内容であると同時に、6月30日ライブに関しても80年代VHSバージョンならではの懐かしさも味わえる。そしてとどめは二枚目のボーナスに収録された「OUR WORLD」の日本放送バージョンという貴重なものまで同時に楽しめてしまう。リアルタイムのファン、現在の後追いのファン、それらすべてが楽しめるであろう文句なしの集大成。そして平成も終わろうとしている2018年、正に日本人の為の1966年日本公演集大成が限定のプレスDVDにてリリースされます！
