もっとも番組自体は放送局が制作したものではなく、1982年に映画会社MGMがアメリカでリリースしていたビデオ・ソフト「THE COMPLEAT BEATLES」が元になっています。タイトルが「COMPLETE」ではなく、グループ名をもじった「COMPLEAT」というタイトルが洒落た映像ソフト。後に日本でも字幕版が制作され、VHS＆ベータの各種ビデオとレーザーディスクでもリリースされていたもの。しかし当時は家庭用ビデオデッキがようやく普及し始めた時代です。多くの方がソフトとしての存在よりも、大晦日の放送においてこの映像の存在を知ったはず。
初のビートルズ映像ヒストリーという非常に画期的なソフトであったことから、例の「ANTHOLOGY」以前にはマストアイテムにまで昇格した名作です。それどころか1986年のインタビューにおいてはポール・マッカートニー自身がこのソフトのことに触れており「こうしたソフトの需要があるのなら、我々で決定版ヒストリーを作りたい」と述べていたほどでした。それが後の「ANTHOLOGY」ですね。

そうは言っても、我々日本人にとって忘れられない映像となったのは本家「THE COMPLEAT BEATLES」ではなく、圧倒的に「ビートルズのすべて」ではないでしょうか。それと言うのも、そこで付け加えられた日本語ナレーションや各登場人物の吹き替えが絶妙だったからです。まず番組全体で重要な役割を果たし、現在よりもはるかに英語が疎かった我々にヒストリーの本質を刻み付けてくれた声の主はあの重鎮。彼の説得力溢れた声が耳に焼き付き、印象的なセリフがいくつも残されています。例えば映画「MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR」の内容に触れた際の「残念ながら、何も起きなかった」といったセリフが忘れられない人も多かったのではないでしょうか。それほどまでに、重鎮によるナレーションの効果は絶大でした。
実際問題として、この映像はビートルズとつながりがない映画会社によってリリースされたものであり、ビートルズのメンバーは誰一人として取材を受けていない。代わりに彼らと交流があった人物の証言がビートルズの人間像を浮き立たせる。これらは現在に至るまで映像ヒストリー制作における典型的な手法と化しており、その点においても画期的でした。そうした登場人物においても「ビートルズのすべて」バージョンでは各人物の吹き替えが絶妙に行われているのがまた印象的。そんな登場人物の吹き替えの中で、誰よりも印象的だったのがジョージ・マーティン。「THE COMPLEAT BEATLES」はビートルズのメンバーへの取材が出来なかった代わりに、マーティンへのインタビューが実現したことで圧倒的に説得力を持ったヒストリーへと仕上がったのです。
この映像の中核を成すマーティンの声を「ビートルズのすべて」バージョンで担当したのは懐かしのハンター・チャンスでおなじみな人物。そう、彼のハンター・チャンス・ボイスがあまりにもマーティンの容姿に溶け込んでしまい、ジョージ・マーティンと言えばハンター・チャンス・ボイスを思い出してしまう…それほどここでの吹き替えは大成功であり、あの声が刷り込まれてしまった日本人は数えきれないはず。

先にも触れたようにこの「THE COMPLEAT BEATLES」、ビートルズの権利関係が今ほど厳しくない80年代前半に作られただけあって、今の目で観るとツッコミどころ満載な場面もあります。その最たる例が1963年のロイヤル・バラエティ・パフォーマンスの場面でしょう。実際にはカラー映像で有名なマンチェスターのライブ映像を収録していたにもかかわらず、冒頭にバラエティ・パフォーマンスでのジョンの「宝石ジャラジャラ」音声を（しかもブートから！）被せ、バラエティ・パフォーマンス風に仕立てていたのです。あるいはトニー・シェリダンとのレコーディングのエピソードのバックにゲット・バック・セッションの音を流してみたり（こちらもブートから）と、相当にアウトローな編集内容。今なら絶対にありえない。
この懐かしい、あまりにも懐かしいこの映像ヒストリー、映像自体は本家をDVD-Rにコピーしたアイテムなどが存在しましたし、「THE COMPLEAT BEATLES」と「ビートルズのすべて」それぞれがYouTube上でも観られますが、元が長い番組ゆえ分割アップロードが途中で放棄されていたり（笑）さらには録画したビデオ・テープの劣化がみられたりしました。その点、今回は保存状態が抜群に良いビデオ・テープの提供によって、驚くほどクリアーで劣化の乱れなど皆無な安定画質、おまけに限定でのプレスDVDが遂に実現するのです。
以前1993年に再放送されたバージョンをギフトとしてリリースしたことがありましたが、その時からリクエストの声が寄せられていた1984年の大晦日に放送された全長版（年明け早々にも再放送されています）がようやく最高画質で登場します。日本人ならばやっぱり「THE COMPLEAT BEATLES」よりも懐かしの「ビートルズのすべて」バージョン、そして何と言ってもジョージ・マーティンのハンター・チャンス・ボイスでしょ！
