結成22年にしてようやく実現した伝説の初来日。そのメモリアルな極上ライヴ・イン・ジャパンが世界初登場です。
彼らの初来日が現実になったのは1991年のこと。それまでグレッグ・オールマンがソロで来日したことはありましたが、ディッキー・ベッツも揃ったTHE ALLMAN BROTHERS BANDとしては、２度目の再結成まで待たねばならなかった。本作に収められているのは、そんな初来日のうち「1991年１月９日：中野サンプラザ公演」。本作は、その現場で直接大気を吸い込んだオリジナル・マスターをダイレクトにCD化したもの。まずは、ショウのポジションを日程で確認しておきましょう。

これが初来日の全５公演。本作の中野サンプラザ公演は、初来日の中でも初日。つまり、正真正銘の“初日本ステージ”だったのです。
私たち日本人にとって極めてメモリアルな本作ですが、本作最大のポイントはそんな感慨さえも吹っ飛ばす最高のサウンド。本作をモノにしたのは80年代から関東で名手として知られている録音家で、当店でも数々の名作プレスアルバムを手がけた方。本作は、その秘蔵コレクションから初めて公開された１本なのです。そのサウンドは、名手コレクションの中でも特級。生々しい喝采にオーディエンス録音の証が刻まれてはいますが、その鮮やかな楽音／歌声は客録離れした逞しさ。よく聴けば会場音響も吸い込んではいるのですが、それが恐ろしく透き通っている。楽音の芯を艶やかに彩りこそすれ、濁りや曇りが一切ない。透明感たっぷりな中に熱いロック＆ブルースが轟くのです。
それだけ客録離れしたクオリティではあっても、確実にオーディエンス録音。その最大の旨みは、待ちに待った初来日を目の当たりにした現場感……いえ、“匂い”です。もちろん、逞しい楽音がオーディエンス・ノイズを制圧しきるのですが、微かではあってもそこには確実に観客達の息吹がある。「いよいよ始まるのか」「本当に来てくれたのか」の不安と期待が頂点を迎える開演シーン、演奏が始まるまでの僅かの間にも息を飲む緊張感、ロックが加速し、ブルースが滴るたびに燃え上がる喝采……。初来日、それも一度限りの初日だからこそ空気感、１曲１曲が初体験の現場感が渦巻くのです。
そんなサウンドで描かれるのは、観客達の“これが聴きたかった！”に応える熱演。当時の最新作『SEVEN TURNS』をフィーチュア（アルバム全９曲中５曲！）しながらも、ショウの中核はやはり往年の大代表曲。デビュー作から『BROTHERS AND SISTERS』までの“コレぞ！”が一気呵成に押し寄せるのです。そのブルースの熱く、艶やかなこと……。
今さら『AT FILLMORE EAST』を例に出すまでもなく、THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BANDこそ生粋の、そして最強のライヴバンド。その真価を日本が初めて体験したのは「1991年１月９日」だった。その記念すべき現場の空気を本生100％で記録したライヴアルバムの金字塔です。
触れまいと思っておりましたが、やはり書かずにはいられない。2017年５月27日に永眠したグレッグ・オールマン。その報に触れたからこそ、名録音家もこの録音を蔵出ししてくださったのです。１人でも多くの方に初来日の“あの日”を、グレッグと同じ時間を生きた四半世紀を、噛みしめてほしくて。本作は、そんな想いと極上のサウンドを永久保存２枚組なのです。良い音・良い曲・良い演奏が最高級に揃っているだけでなく、私たち日本人には２本とない無上のライヴアルバム。今週末、この想いを共にしてくださるあなたのお手元へ。
