このライヴは、WISHBONE ASHでももっとも古くから知られる超有名録音で、幾多のブートレッグはもとより、「BBC RADIO 1 LIVE IN CONCERT」として公式リリースもされている代名詞的なもの。現在まで、その頂点バージョンと言われてきたのは、10年ほど前にリリースされた「POP SPECTACULAR（Wardour-044）」でした。極上のBBC放送のトランスクリプション・ディスクからダイレクトに起こされたサウンドはもちろん、モノラルだったオフィシャル盤をものともしないステレオ・サウンドの美しさは、まさに究極的。その衝撃は海を越え、IRON MAIDENのスティーヴ・ハリスをはじめ、このCDを手に入れたくて足を運ぶミュージシャンもいたほどなのです。
本作は、それほど究極的だった「POP SPECTACULAR」を超えてしまった１枚。世界の音楽家が愛した「POP SPECTACULAR」は放送原盤から起こされたものですが、本作の元になったのは原盤よりさらに源泉に迫ったリールマスターからデジタル化されたものなのです。放送版の曲間は各トラックをフェイド処理してDJのバンド紹介・曲紹介が挿入されていましたが、このバージョンにはそれさえなく、曲間処理の荒っぽさも生々しい。そして、それ以上に鮮烈なのがサウンド。アナログ盤起こしとは次元が違い、豊かな鳴りは一層深く、マイルドで厚みを感じさせながら、音の１粒１粒は一層鮮やか。まるで極上のビロードのように滑らかで艶やかなサウンドが耳に注がれるのです。また、「ARGUS」のデラックス・エディションでもDJも丸ごとステレオ放送版で再オフィシャル化されてはいるものの、その際に施されたエコーなどの音処理が不自然だった。本作はそれもなく、生演奏そのものが耳へ、脳の中へ飛び込んでくるのです。放送用の６曲以外の「Jailbait」「The Pilgrim」は、「POP SPECTACULAR」と同じく別マスターからボーナス収録しました。もちろん、こちらも現存するベスト・マスターを使用しており、精緻なマスタリングで違和感を最小限に抑えています。
そんなサウンドの主がWISHBONE ASH。これがなんとも素晴らしい。ピッキングの妙味から克明なツイン・ギター、シンプルなようで多彩でジャジーなビート、派手でも超絶名ハイトーンでもないヴォーカルが幾重にも織りなすハーモニー。枯れていながら豊かという不思議な音楽の深み……。まさに英国でしかあり得ない深い森のようなロック。その極みです。
そして、その滋味溢れるサウンド・演奏で繰り広げられる大名盤「ARGUS」の世界。リリース直後のプロモーションということもあり、アルバム全７曲中５曲を冒頭から畳みかけている。成功を手中にした「LIVE DATES」に比べると、やや堅めの演奏でもありますが、その分スタジオ作「ARGUS」により近い。まさに、あの大名盤の生演奏バージョンでもあるのです。

ピーター・ガブリエル時代のGENESISやJETHRO TULL、QUEENなど、“純英国”を感じさせてくれるバンドはいくつかあります。しかし、歌詞やヴィジュアル、コンセプトの力がなくともノート１つ、ハーモニー１つで「あぁ、これが英国なんだ」と魂に刻んでくれるバンドは、WISHBONE ASHをおいて他にない。その頂点たる「ARGUS」時代、その英国BBC録音をまさかのマスター・クオリティで伝えてくれる１枚です。“全世界的”ではなく、あくまでも、どこまでも“英国的”なライヴアルバム。ブリティッシュ・ロックの１つの極み、今週末あなたのお手元へお届けします。
