ザ・フー1973年の「クアドロフィニア（四重人格）・ツアー」と言えば、その昔、アメリカの人気ライブ・ラジオプログラム「キングビスケット・フラワー・アワー」で放送され、そのステレオ・サウンドボードのエアチェックソースを基に製作されたアナログ・ブート「TALES OF THE WHO」がつとに有名です。この公演は、12月4日、フィラデルフィアのスペクトラムで行なわれたものでした。そのアナログ・ブートでは知ることのできなかった部分を含む「117分最長収録盤」として当店がリリースし、再プレスを合わせて600セット（！）が完売になった、モンスター・タイトルが「SPECTRUM 1973」でした。デビュー50周年で盛り上がる今年、ザ・フーの名音源をグレードアップしてリリースしていくのが当店のポリシーでもあります。本盤は単なる「SPECTRUM 1973」の再発ではなく、リマスタリングを施し、音質のさらなるグレードアップを図ったものです。元々オフィシャル盤並みの高音質の音源ですが、今回のリリースに際し、ドラムの分離感を際立たせること、及びベースラインの混濁を緩和することに焦点を定め微調整しました。その結果、ダイナミックレンジが広がった印象と全体のステレオ分離感が増した印象を持っていただけるサウンドに変貌しています。ヘッドホンで聴き比べていただくことにより、この効果はより明確にお判りいただけるでしょう。コンサートのオープニング・イントロダクション、My Wife、The Punk And The Godfather、5:15、そして8分間の大歓声の後に演奏されるアンコールラストのNaked Eyeをも収録した最長・最良音質盤が本盤であり、「クアドロフィニア・ツアー」の決定版として今後も君臨することは間違いないタイトルです。これまで「TALES OF THE WHO」収録の音源は、フィラデルフィア公演音源とラーゴ公演音源がミックスされたものであるという説がありました（ラスト２曲Pinball Wizard, See Me Feel Meがラーゴ公演と言われていました）が、本盤により全てフィラデルフィア公演の音源であったことが証明されたという、歴史的タイトルでもあります。「クアドロフィニア」と言いつつも、オーラスの名曲Love, Reign O’er Meが未収録になっていますが、これは、Doctor Jimmy 終演後、そのままWon’t Get Fooled Againを演奏していることから推測すると、演奏されなかった可能性も考えられます（有名なザ・フーのデータ・サイト「The Who Concert Guide」http://www.thewholive.net/index.phpでも本盤のセットリストがフルだったと記されています）。本ツアー初期では、アルバム・コンセプト再現のため、バックに流した「QUADROPHENIA」のシンセサイザー・オーケストレーションのテープのピッチと実際の演奏が合わず、ピートを激怒させたこともあったのですが、本盤ではThe Real Meの入りにその危うさが残るくらいで、その後はバッキング・テープとの完全なシンクロ効果が発揮されています。その最大の効果はBell Boy、Doctor Jimmyで感じていただけるでしょう。そしてよく聴いていただくと、Won’t Get Fooled Againには、バックにピートの弾くアコースティックのリズム・ギターのテープが流されています。このツアーでピートは、「QUADROPHENIA」の完全再現だけでなく、ステージのバンドサウンドをスタジオ・バージョンに劣らない重厚なものにしようと意図していたことが窺えます。彼がこの試みを実践したのは、このツアーだけでした。そういう意味でもこのツアーはザ・フーの歴史上においても特異かつ重要なものであったと言えるでしょう。その決定版が本盤になります。とにかく、ザ・フーのファンならば本盤を無視して通り過ぎることはできません。「TOMMY」、「WHO’S NEXT」、「QUADROPHENIA」という大作・名作を立て続けに生み出してきたザ・フーのバンドとしてのピークを捉えたと言っても過言ではない、スーパーエクセレントなプレイ・クオリティとサウンド・クオリティを両立したスーパー・タイトルが本盤です！
