しかしその「TOKYO 1980」を、いとも簡単に越えてしまったが本作での映像です。音楽番組において2回に分けて放送されたテイクをまとめ、業務用ベータ・カセットに保存していたという本作の元マスターは、もはや存在そのものが衝撃的でした。オープニングの「TOTO: LIVE IN TOKYO」という文字から、ぶれや滲みが全くと言って良いほど気にならず、インサートされている曲目・歌詞テキストも、その際立ったマスター・クオリティを証明します。当然ながら映像のディティールも素晴らしく、赤や緑など色の粒立ちに至っては「30年以上前の放送テイク」という但し書きも不要なほど。もちろんサウンドも極上のステレオ・サウンドボードです。

オープニングの「Hydra」から、スモークの漂うステージに印象的な照明効果など、それぞれが楽曲の世界観を見事に再現。デイヴィッド・ペイチのヴォーカルとキーボード、ステーヴ・ルカサーのギタープレイも、このまま公式リリースも可能なほど見事な鮮やかさとシャープさで堪能できます。
テレビ放送という都合上、収録されているのは実際のライヴの約半分、50分間程度なのですが、続く「I’ll Supply The Love」や「99」など、ヒットナンバーが連続する構成は、観る者に確かな満足感を与えるはず。「Tale Of A Man」や「Georgy Porgy」の熱演はもちろんですが、大ヒット曲「Hold The Line」も、良く知られるスタジオ・テイクに数倍する聴き応えと見応えです。オーディエンスの大歓声の中スタートする「White Sister」は、「この曲はこんなにハードだったか？」と思うほど、熱くロックしています！　素晴らしい演奏に浸るうち、ラストの「All Us Boys」まで50分間があっという間に過ぎ去ってしまうでしょう！

本作はもちろんオリジナル・メニュー付き。とにかく全てが規格外だと断言できる50分間です！　この映像はプレスCD２枚組の「HYDRA IN NAGOYA」でもボーナス・リリースされましたが、”初来日・東京２公演のカップリング”という観点に立てば、本作「HYDRA COMES TOKYO」でのボーナスこそが自然であり統一感もあると言うもの。同作に収録された３月12日のオーディエンス録音、そして翌13日の最終日録音と併せて、ファンを熱狂させた東京公演を視覚からもお楽しみください。
