名録音だらけの“TOTO XIV JAPAN TOUR 2016”でも、堂々たる西日本の代表作がプレスCDで登場です。本作は「2016年3月14日・大阪フェスティバル・ホール」公演のオーディエンス・アルバムです。このツアーから生まれたプレス・アルバムは、本作で4本目。整理に意味も込めて、ここで俯瞰してみましょう。

このように、大阪公演は全8回中7公演目でした。これまでのところ、ツアー・ベストのクオリティを誇る超名録音は『BUDOKAN 2016(ZION-072)』でしたが、本作も負けず劣らずのスーパー録音。東の代表作が『BUDOKAN 2016』だとすれば、本作は文句なしに西の代表作なのです。
そんな名録音をモノにしたのは、ご存じ“西日本最強テーパー氏”。「現場音より良い音で録る」とさえ言われる名手中の名手です。しかも、現場となった“フェスティバル・ホール”は、幾多の外タレ公演でお馴染みの会場で、“大阪ナンバー1のサウンド”とさえ言われる名会場。もちろん、“西日本のあらゆるライヴ・スペースを知り尽くしている”とさえ囁かれる名匠が伝統会場の音響を熟知していないはずがなく、彼をして「会心の出来」と言わしめるほどの極上サウンドに仕上がりました。しかも今回の録音ポジションはなんと最前列。最前列は、ダイレクトな楽音を拾いやすいものの、低音が回り込みがちです。しかし、名匠はそんなことは百も承知ですから、低音を軽減するマイク・セッティングで対応。ドラムは生音のド迫力を、他の楽音はアンプからの直サウンドをバランス良く収めることに成功している。結果として、最前席ならではのダイレクト感をたっぷりと封じ込めつつ、フェスティバル・ホール特有の澄み切ったクリアさまで両立させているのです。
実際、本作から流れ出るサウンドは、まるでサウンドボードのように美しく、パーカッションの1打1打まで鮮烈。それでいてサウンドボードのような白々しさはなく、手拍子がさざ波のように押し寄せる。この手拍子がまたなんとも素晴らしい。最前列だけに背後から広く広く迫ってくるのですが、それが日本人らしくビシッとテンポに合っている。生音ドラム&パーカッション、PAのベース、背後からの手拍子が壮大なリズム隊となって身を包み、それが感動的なメロディを幾重にも盛り立てるのです。そんな妙味がクラシックスだけで終わらないから、今回のTOTOは素晴らしい。冒頭でかっ飛ばす「Running Out Of Time」、サビも印象的な「Holy War」、パーカッシヴな隠し味も軽快な「Orphan」等々など、新曲群でも得も言われぬ一体感、現場ならではのスペクタクルを醸し出すのです。
もちろん、クラシックスでの盛り上がりも素晴らしい。35周年の超グレイテスト・ヒッツだった2年前の前回ツアーとは打って変わり、「I’ll Supply The Love」や「Stranger In Town」「Georgy Porgy」「Afraid Of Love」「Without Your Love」「The Road Goes On」など、渋い選曲や久しぶりのナンバーもずらり。ふたを開けてみると前回と同じ曲が1/3、新曲1/3、それ以外の曲が1/3と綺麗なバランス。見事にTOTO印な新曲で“新章”を印象づけながら、長年のファンにも嬉しいショウとなったのです。

「名会場+良席+名録音家」……必勝の条件が総て揃い、生まれるべくして生まれた名録音。まさに、東の代表作『BUDOKAN 2016』にさえ匹敵する西の代表作たる1本、ツアーを代表する2トップ録音の誕生です。悲報を振り払う熱演の『AMAGASAKI 2016(ZION-073)』に対し、クオリティの本作。名匠“西日本最強テーパー氏”渾身の力作、どうぞたっぷりとご堪能ください。
