本作は、そのライヴを極上のスーパー画質で捉えたオーディエンス映像。驚くべきはそのアングルとクオリティでして、なにしろ撮影ポジションはステージ中央の最前席。しかも、ただの最前席ではなく、通常ならカメラピットにでもなる激近アングルで、ジョン・エサリッジとテオ・トラヴィスを思いっきり見上げる。２人の間で、ほぼ３メートルと離れていないような大接写なのです。ビルボードライブ東京でご覧になった方なら分かると思いますが、ステージにもっとも近い席で食事しながら見上げる感覚……いや、それよりも近いかも知れません。
そんな前代未聞の近さの上、最新のデジタル機材によるウルトラ美麗画質を極めた映像美が凄い。ズームになると手元や表情どころか、ギターのフレットに落ちる弦の影までもがハッキリ見えるという凄まじさ。あらゆるバンドの映像を扱ってきましたが、この画質は、ちょっと覚えがないレベルの驚愕映像なのです。そのアングルにも負けないのが、音質。それほどの激近ですから、サウンドのダイレクト感も半端ではない。もう、このレベルになったらライン録音かマイク録音かの違いなど関係ありません。
それほどのクオリティで記録されたライヴは、半年前の日本公演の記憶がフラッシュバックする熱演。演目も日本公演に近いのですが、日本では披露した「Burden Of Proof」「The Nodder」がない代わりに「The Steamer」「Chloe and the Pirates」「Song of Aeolus」がセットイン。当日はラストにインプロヴィゼーションから雪崩れ込む「As If」で締めたのですが、残念ながら本作ではその前に終わってしまいます。日本とは違い、ゲストのキースティペットはいないものの、ドラムはかのジョン・マーシャル。本来あるべきSOFT MACHINE LEGACYのカルテット・アンサンブルをたっぷりと聴かせてくれるのです。
とりわけ印象的なのは（アングルのせいもあって）エサリッジとトラヴィス。「Hazard Profile」で足を小刻みにばたつかせながら手に汗握るギターソロを弾き倒すエサリッジ、そのソロをヒマそうに眺めていたトラヴィスがフルートを奏でる幻想的な「Chloe and the Pirates」、そして２人がかりで泣きに泣く「Song of Aeolus」、スリリングに掛け合う「Gesolreat」……。もちろん、２人だけではありません。なかなかアップにはなりませんが、「Fallout」で矍鑠たるソロを披露し、白熱のバトルを繰り広げるマーシャル、「Gesolreat」をグルーヴィに、「Kings And Queens」をドリーミィに聴かせるロイ・バビントンのベースも表情豊か。まったく、どの曲もこたえられないほど素晴らしい演奏です。
前代未聞のスーパークオリティで繰り広げられる、極上の本生ジャズロック。映像が、サウンドが、演奏が、どこまでもディープで美しい絶品映像です。これから少しずつ秋が深まってまいりましたが、これからの長い夜にこれ以上相応しい供はないでしょう。どこまでも贅沢な音楽時間を約束する１枚、あなたのご自宅へお贈りします。
