今回の音源ですが、単純に音像のオンな度合いやクリアネスという点では「SHEA STADIUM 1989」に軍配が上がるでしょう。ところがこちらの音源の音質も非常に魅力的なのです。演奏を程よい距離感とバランスで捉えた音質は正に理想的な録音状態であり、さらには大人しくアナログチックな質感がもたらす耳触りの良さは絶品。オンな音圧の迫力が感じられた反面、時としてざらついた質感を感じさせた「SHEA STADIUM 1989」と比べるとアナログ本来のナチュラルで丸みを帯びたマイルドな音質が病みつきになってしまうかもしれません。

聴き心地抜群な音質で聴くシェイ・スタジアム最終日ですが、これが盛り上がりと演奏内容共に絶品です！ストーンズがいつも気合の入った演奏を披露する大都市、ニューヨーク。そこにあるシェイ・スタジアム（ビートルズで有名な会場ですが、ストーンズが使用するのはこの時が最初で最後でした）での最終公演はライブ開始直後から凄まじい盛り上がりぶり。録音者の近辺には女性のファンがいたようですが、ライブ前半では彼女たちによる文字通りの黄色い歓声がちょっと目立ちます。ところが彼女たちの盛り上がり方というのがちょっと面白く、代表曲が立て続けに演奏されることを喜ぶだけでなく、89年アメリカ・ツアーを代表するアコースティック・ナンバー「Play With Fire」も始まると大喜びして歌い出す始末。当時このツアーを観に行った方なども同曲が意外なほど盛り上がりをみせていたと証言していましたが、それが実証されるような場面はこのツアーがリアルタイムな方であればニヤリとさせられてしまうことでしょう。それに同じニューヨークでも75年の「サティスファクション・ガールズ」のしつこい絶叫と比べたら可愛いもの（笑）。さらに言えば序盤で二回も上空を旅客機が通過する音が聴こえます。何とも野外スタジアムらしい場面ですね。

そんな最終日ならではの盛り上がりはもちろんですが、それだけに気合の入りまくったミック文字通りの熱唱も素晴らしいものがあります。もうオープニングの「Start Me Up」からしていつも以上の熱唱が凄まじい！終盤の力の入った歌いっぷりなどは流石ニューヨーク、しかも最終日ならでは。しかしオープニングでこれほどの好調ぶりを誇示するミックです、その後もアッパーな調子で歌い続けてくれます。思えばこの時のミックはまだ40代半ば、そして持ち前の節制によってここまで全開な歌を聞かせてくれたのですね。今回付属する当日の映像を見てもミック絶好調な様子は垣間見られますが、その熱唱はあのアトランティック・シティの完成度の高さとはまた違った魅力が溢れています。ただでさえレベルが高いこの日のミックのパフォーマンスですが、終盤でまたアッパーな高みに登り詰めるのが「Sympathy For The Devil」です。いったい何なんでしょうか、このハイパー・シャウト。あの名演東京ドームの「Satisfaction」と並び称されてもおかしくないほどの熱唱、89年にもこんな壮絶な場面があったことを再確認してください。当店が以前リリースしたDVD『DALLAS 1989 2nd NIGHT』がキースの日だとすれば、この日は正にミックの日だと断言いたします！
