「こんな公式テイクがあったの？」とマニア間で話題沸騰の「ON STAGE」の「8トラ」ヴァージョン。今回はお待ちかね、「ON STAGE」よりさらに一年前の1976年にリリースされていた「RISING」の「8トラ」です。所有者は故コージー・パウエル。コージーはコレクションと言うか私物で「RISING」「ON STAGE」「LONG LIVE ROCK ‘N’ ROLL」の３本を所有していたようですが（「DOWN TO EARTH」は無し）、それだけレインボーのロニー時代の三作品に愛情・愛着があったという裏付けではないでしょうか。前回同様に「RISING」を状態の良い８トラ専用プレイヤー（これを探すのが困難）で再生してみました。そこには驚きの連続があったのです。「ON STAGE」での説明でも書いた通り、「8トラ」は4つのプログラムで構成されており、プログラム順で自動再生していくシステムです。カセットより広い6ミリの幅のテープに４つのプログラムが並行して記録されているわけで、再生装置をオートプレイ状態にしておけば、自動的に「ONE」「TWO」「THREE」「FOUR」と再生されるわけで、たしかにアルバム全部を一気に聴くには便利なような気もするのですが、問題はソフトを作成する際に、各プログラムごと、全て均一の時間で設定しなければならないということなのです。おそらく、8トラ・メーカーの人は「RISING」のマスターテープを渡されたときに、同時にトラックごとのタイム表も貰っていると思われます。「RISING」で一番長い曲はStargazerですので、そこからこの8トラのプログラムの時間設定をStargazerの収録時間8分26秒＋余白数秒で、8分32秒と設定したのだと想定されます（ジャケットにも8：32の表記あり）。そうすると、Tarot Woman（6分）、Run With The Wolf（3分50秒）とアルバム通りに入れると、Run With The Wolfの2分30秒目は歌のサビの部分ですので、8トラ製作者は流石にそこで分断するのは忍びないと思ったのか、思い切って、2曲目と3曲目の位置を逆転させて収録するという奇策に出たわけです。結果、２トラック目に収録されたStarstruckはリッチーのカッコ良いギターソロの25秒目で虚しくフェイドアウトするものの、「PROGRAM TWO」はそのソロの終わりからフェイドインし、その位置にはStarstruck (cont.)という曲後半の1分46秒ヴァージョンが収録されるという結果になってわけです。Starstruckを分断収録することで、代わりにRun With The WolfとDo You Close Your Eyesはフルで収録されています。「PROGRAM THREE」には最長曲Stargazerもフルで収録されているので問題なし。

しかし、「PROGRAM FOUR」で8トラ製作者は問題に直面したようです。A Light In The Blackも大曲とは言え、Stargazerより16秒短い8分12秒テイク（余白を入れても8分15秒程）で、これでは17秒もエンドに空白ができてしまう・・・とうことで、これを避けるために、なんと勝手にA Light In The Blackのイントロを長めに編集し、8分32秒のロングヴァージョンを造り上げて収録しているのです。通常、18秒目で歌に入るところを本テイクでは35秒目で歌に入るようにイントロを編集しています。どうやってるかと申しますと、メインリフの後のEmのスケールダウンのキメの直後（14秒目）に、メインリフのスタートからスケールダウンのキメまでの12秒のコピーテープを挿入しイントロセクションを倍の長さに収録し、更には30秒目にリフ回数を勝手に増やすという神をも恐れぬテープパンチを２回行い（しかも雑な処理！）、オリジナルなA Light In The Blackのロンゲスト・ヴァージョン（8分33秒テイク）を、恐らく勝手に製作・収録しているわけです。いやはや、こんな「公式」テイクがこの世にあったとは！

最後に音質ですが、先の「On Stage」同様にクラシカルなテープテイストを感じさせるなかなか魅力的なサウンドで収録されています。現行CDに比べると、音の広がりも分離感も希薄な分、実に懐かしい感触のサウンドを楽しむことができます。高域から低域まで音の劣化もなく、オリジナルのマスターそのものの質感で、名盤「Rising」と堪能できます。たしかに70年代レコードやカセットを通して聴いていた「Rising」はこんな感じの質感であったと記憶しています。例によって、聴いて楽しく、内容に驚愕の、これまで想像だにしなかった大変貴重な「Rising」8トラ・ヴァージョン。限定プレスCDにてリリース決定です。
