キニー発掘シリーズの最新弾、“BENT OUT OF SHAPE TOUR 1983-1984”の貴重な本国公演の登場です。本作は「1983年9月17日フィンズバリー・パーク公演」を収めたオーディエンス・アルバム。古くから伝説的なオリジナルの3枚組アナログ「STARGAZER(XL 1585/86)」で知られるキニー録音ですが、今回はどうやら録音カセット自体は失われてしまったらしく、伝説的なオリジナルLPからの復刻となりました。これまでも多数のキニー製アナログをデジタル化して参りましたが、そこで培ってきたノウハウを活かし、アナログの持つ暖かみと現代技術だからこそのクリアさを併せ持つサウンドを実現。録音自体が非常に優秀名ことに加え、オリジナルでは高かったピッチも正確に、わずかにあった細かなノイズも丁寧に除去。もちろん、ムダに派手にするようなことはしておりませんが、録音が封じ込んでいた楽音を徹底的に磨き上げたのです。たとえオリジナルカセットでなくても、音楽自体が「プレスしろ」と語りかけてくるようなサウンドに仕上がったのです。
その結果生まれたサウンドは、素晴らしく美しいクリアさに満ちている。サウンドボードのような耳直サウンドというわけではありませんが、がっしりした中低音の上を、美しい高音が立ち上がるようなバランスで、会場の空間を楽曲が真っ直ぐ貫くビビッド感はたっぷり。RAINBOWですから、肝心要のリッチー・ブラックモアのギターやジョー・リン・ターナーの歌声にフォーカスされるのはもちろんのこと、本作はさらに新加入のチャック・バーギまでも精緻に聴き取れるのが凄い。タイトなリズム感ばかりが指摘されるチャックですが、本作で聴けるドラミングは、細やかなおかずにセンスが溢れる素晴らしいもの。冒頭の「Spotlight Kid」からしてシャープなビートで名曲を生まれ変わらせつつ、要所のキメも恐ろしく鋭い。その上で入れてくるシンバルワークを嵐のように叩き込みつつ、それがまったく浮いていない。アップテンポでは小気味良いおかずを入れ込んでは曲の切れ味を際立たせ、ミドルテンポのシンプルなビートでも単なるリズムキープだけでなく、よく聴くと“ドラムリフ”を作っている。そして、「Catch The Rainbow」のようにドラマティックな曲では、徐々に燃え上がっていくリッチーのギターに多彩なフレーズで応酬し、曲を白熱させていく……そのことごとくが曲にマッチしていて、却って気づかなくなるほどに自然。ズシンと腹に来る“重さ”はなく、いかにも80年代的な軽いサウンドではありますが、その正確さと細やかさ、センスの良さはさすがの“元BRAND X”と言うべきでしょうか。イアン・ペイスが再結成DEEP PURPLEを渋っていたときも、1995年の再結成RAINBOWでも、度々リッチーがチャックを誘おうとしたのも無理はない……そんなドラミングが克明に感じ取れるサウンドなのです。
それほどまでにチャックが燃えているのも、このライヴがRAINBOWの故国イギリス公演だからかも知れません。1981年のイギリス公演でもアメリカ人のジョー・リン・ターナーやボビー・ロンディネリが本国のファンに向かって“自分こそが相応しい!”と証明するかのような熱演を聴かせてくれましたが、チャックもまたアメリカン。正直なところ、本作のジョーは1984年の来日公演ほど美声は聴かせてくれませんが、その分チャックはお釣りが来そうなほどの熱演です。
そして、リッチーもまた燃えている。実は、“STRAIGHT BETWEEN THE EYES TOUR 1982”ではイギリスツアーはなく、今回は1981年の“DIFFICULT TO CURE TOUR 1981”以来、2年ぶりの母国公演。以前は長い長いソロで観客を魅了するライヴしたが、1982年辺りから楽曲をコンパクトに聴かせつつ、その中に魅惑のフレーズで聴かせるスタイルに変化してきました。前年は変化に迷いのようなものもありましたが、ここでは新しいスタイルにも馴染み、フレーズに迷いがない。時にトロけるように甘く、時にキリッと引き締まったフレーズの数々。その密度がグッと高まったようなギターなのです。
さらに日本では聴けなかった「Drinking With The Devil」「Stargazer」も美味しい。「Drinking With The Devil」がフル演奏なのに対し、「Stargazer」は2分弱ほどで「Stranded」に雪崩れ込むスタイル。しかし、しっかりとヴォーカル入りですし、何より第1回MONSTERS OF ROCK以来の復活。この演出を日本でもやって欲しかった……。その「Stranded」から「Death Alley Driver」「Fire Dance」のアップ3連発で会場は一気に加熱していく。この“BENT OUT OF SHAPE TOUR 1983-1984”は、チャックを得た歯切れの良さに加えてテンポも速く、疾走感がたまらない! ポップな曲作りでヒットチャートを狙っていたイメージの強い時期ですが、ライヴの現場では新世代ヘヴィメタルの台頭も視野に入れたようなアグレッションも見せていた。それを象徴するような3曲なのです。

ジョー時代でも最も完成度が高いと言われながら、異様なほど短い日程によって記録はRAINBOWの全時代でもかなり少ない“BENT OUT OF SHAPE TOUR 1983-1984”。その貴重なライヴを素晴らしいクオリティで捉えきったキニー録音の傑作です。2年ぶりの本国イギリス公演の熱気、磨きのかかった新しいコンサート・スタイル、シャープで多彩なチャックのドラミング……美味しい要素のたっぷり詰まった1枚。ぜひ、存分にご堪能ください!
