In, it’s not the same as whether the original VHS version is being played. There is a radio DJ at the beginning and end, but that’s not all. Although the intro of “Now I’m Here” has been shortened and the solo of “Killer Queen” has a mistake, the edits are in accordance with the original VHS in detail, but the pitch is normal and the mix is ​​different above all . It is not the perfect sound like the current “ROCK MONTREAL”, but it is much more natural than the original VHS / DVD version “WE WILL ROCK YOU”. “WE WILL ROCK YOU” had an extremely tightly squeezed sound that was three-dimensional but did not spread at all. Vocals have no lingering sound and guitar orchestration is poor. The sound of the drum was full of buns. However, the FM broadcast version (this work) sounds all naturally. The ensemble doesn’t have much sense of space because it’s a bit more monaural, but the sound of the instrument extends naturally and sounds like an analog sound close to the original sound of the band.

As I mentioned at the beginning, “1981 Montreal” is a special show, and since the tour is not part of the tour, Freddie has no fuss and climaxes. そんな本作に収められているのは、もちろん「1981年11月24日＋25日モントリオール公演」。そのFMサウンドボード録音です。『ROCK MONTREAL』ほど特別で紆余曲折を経て大名盤となったライヴアルバムはないかも知れません。その事情をご説明するためにも、まずは当時のスケジュールからショウのポジションを振り返ってみましょう。

これが一大全盛期にあった1980年/1981年のQUEEN。1981年の10月にはワールド・ツアーを終えており、その後『GREATEST HITS』をリリース。本作のモントリオール公演は、その大ヒット真っ直中にあった約１ヶ月後に行われた特別公演でした。なぜ、この時期に行われたかと言えば、撮影のため。当時、大全盛のステージを記録するコンサート映画が計画され、その撮影のためだけにブッキングされたショウだったのです。これだけでも特別ですが、それだけではない。振り返れば、このショウはサポート・キーボーディストのいない「４人だけのQUEEN」の最終公演ともなり、ベスト盤に伴う「Under Pressure」の全世界初演でもあった。さらに言えば、1981年は結成10周年にあたり、“11月24日”と言えばフレディが亡くなるちょうど10年前……。この中の１つでも特別なショウになるのに、それが幾つも重なりまくった運命的なショウだったのです。
ご存じの通り、そんなモントリオール２公演は『ROCK MONTREAL』となり、数あるQUEENライヴの中でも屈指の大名盤として君臨。マニアよってはQUEENの最高傑作とまで断じています。しかし、この名記録は最初から大名盤の栄光に包まれていたわけではありませんでした。そもそも、最初に公開されたのは1984年の映画『WE WILL ROCK YOU』だったのですが、これが大問題作。当時最高峰だった35ミリフィルムが使用された史上最高のロック映画となるはずだったものの、数曲カットされた上に大幅にピッチが高く、まともに見られる物ではなかった。どうやら監督がロックに慣れていなかったらしく、撮影現場でも大モメ。その後、QUEEN側が製作から手を引いてしまったために起きた悲劇のようでした。その後、幾度かのアップグレードを経て、2007年にはQUEEN史上の大傑作である現行『ROCK MONTREAL』にまで昇華するわけですが、ここで紆余曲折の間に生まれたバージョン違いを整理してみましょう。

●Ａ（1984年）初代VHS版『WE WILL ROCK YOU』
→「Flash/The Hero」「Jailhouse Rock」がカット。ピッチが大幅に狂い、オーバーダブ多数。「Killer Queen」のソロでミス。
●Ｂ（1997年）DVD版『WE WILL ROCK YOU』
→「Flash/The Hero」がカット。ピッチは正常なものの、オーバーダブや「Killer Queen」ソロのミスはそのまま。
●Ｃ（2006年）2CD版『ROCK MONTREAL』
→完全版。オーバーダブが減らされ、「Killer Queen」のソロはミスのないテイクにに差し替え。

●Ｄ：WESTWOOD ONE放送版　←★本作★
→編集はＡに準じつつ、ピッチは正常でミックスがナチュラル。

……と、このようになっています。本作は進化していった公式盤とはまた別のFM放送サウンドボード。WESTWOOD ONEの名物番組“Superstars Concert Series”放送バージョンで、そのマスター・リールから起こされたものです。実のところ、上記以外にも放送はあるものの、ほとんどは「Ｂ」以降で「Jailhouse Rock」入りバージョン。本作はそれとは異なり、「Jailhouse Rock」がまだ入っていない段階。詳しい放送日が判明していないので断言はできないものの、恐らくは80年代当時にFM放送されたもののようです。
では初代VHS版をそのまま流しているかと言うと、それとも違う。冒頭や最後にラジオDJも入っていますが、それだけではありません。「Now I’m Here」のイントロが短縮されていたり、「Killer Queen」のソロにミスがある等、細部に初代VHSに準じた編集が見られるものの、ピッチは正常であり、何よりミックスが異なる。現行『ROCK MONTREAL』のようなパーフェクト・サウンドではないのですが、初代VHS版/DVD版『WE WILL ROCK YOU』よりも遙かにナチュラルなのです。『WE WILL ROCK YOU』は極端にタイトに絞り込んだサウンドは立体的ではあったも広がりがまったくなかった。ヴォーカルには余韻がなく、ギターオーケストレーションは貧弱。ドラムに至ってはパンパンと詰まったサウンドでした。しかし、FM放送版（本作）ではすべて自然に鳴っている。ややモノラル寄りなミックスなだけにアンサンブルに空間感覚はあまり感じられませんが、楽器の鳴りはどこまでも自然に伸び、バンド本来の音に近いアナログ感覚のサウンドなのです。

冒頭でも述べたましたが「1981年のモントリオール」は特別すぎるショウであり、ツアーの一貫ではないために疲れもなくフレディも絶頂の声を轟かせる。監督とのトラブルもありましたが、そんなバンドの怒りがエネルギーとなって吹き出す大名演です。もし、ピッチの正常な『WE WILL ROCK YOU』が当時LPリリースされていたとしたら？　それはもちろん『GREATEST HITS』のステージ版として愛され、『LIVE KILLERS』を超える歴史的大名盤としてシーンを席巻したことでしょう。本作のアナログ・サウンドには、そんな「歴史のＩＦ」を想像せずにはいられない。長さ・編集・サウンドのすべてで超アップグレードしている現行『ROCK MONTREAL』を超えるとは申せませんが、本作もまた素晴らしき「1981年モントリール」の１つの姿なのです。そんな貴重な別バージョンを永久保存した２枚組。どうぞ、じっくりとご堪能ください。。
