この日のオーディエンス録音(※以降、AUD)はそうしたプロショット映像やサウンドボード流出音源(※以降、SBD)があった為か見過ごされており、音盤化された事がありません。故に今回が史上初のプレスCD化となる訳ですが、既にそれらプロショット映像やSBD録音がありますから「何故今更AUD版なんだ?」と疑問に思われる方も多いでしょう。フロイド専門の当レーベルが史上初のプレスCDとしてこれを送り出す理由もそこにあるのですが、35年間も人々に振り向かれなかったこのAUD録音の音質が実は桁外れに優れており、80年THE WALL最終日のリアル・ドキュメンタリーとしても恐らくこれ以上は存在しないであろうレベルの超極上音源だからなのです。その硬質で太い芯の入った明瞭感満点のサウンドは聴く側の五感を強く刺激し、通常想起されるAUD録音のクオリティを軽く超越しています。特にリズムセクションが目立つ中~低音域のマッシヴな音像は生音が直接こちらにぶつかってくるフロント・ロウな音触を誰もが実感される筈ですし、ギターやキーボードの音色も艶やかなので音の輪郭が際立ち、ボーカルもその芯の太さと明瞭さに仰天されること間違いなしです。加えてSBD録音には無い、臨場感溢れる客席側の熱気も圧倒的な鮮明さがディスクエンドまで維持されるので、ややもすると現代のイヤーモニター・マトリックスの音像に近い印象を持たれる方もきっと多いでしょう。唯一、左チャンネルで観客がたまに大きな歓声を上げるのが難と言えば難ですが(※勿論、終始騒いでいる訳ではありません)、しかしそうした場内の熱狂の渦中に我が身がありながらも信じ難いほど高い解像度で鋭い演奏が次々にぶつかってくる快感こそが、このAUD録音最大のトピックとなっているのです!!

「Hey You」はスタート前の、客電が点いた状態での会場の音が暫く収録されているのが特徴です。ただ暫くすると一度途切れ、多くのTHE WALLタイトル同様に演奏は冒頭がカット・インで始まるのですが、演奏前の音が含まれている点は注目に値するでしょう。「Nobody Home」はピアノ低音部の重厚な和音の広がりが美しく、中音域で動くアンサンブルと泳ぐ様に紡がれるボーカルが織り成す音響構造が麗しい透明サウンドで捉えられています。後半2分40秒で出てくる” ♪ (But I got nowhere to) fly to… fly to… fly to…” のエコーも実に立体的で、場内で音がステレオの様に右に左に揺れ動く様子も特上の透明サウンドで出てきますので御注目下さい。「Comfortably Numb」はこの日ならではの音の繋ぎ方でギターソロを展開していますが、このAUD録音は響きの残共感までしっかり捉えていますで、観慣れたプロショット映像や聴き慣れたSBDとはまた違う聴き心地を存分に御愉しみ戴けるでしょう。「The Show Must Go On」では歌を盛り立てるチャーミングな装飾音やコーラスが純粋な美しさで輝いており、これが幅の広い響きで場内に染み渡ってゆく音像に心ときめく筈です。反面「In The Flesh」では重量級のサウンドが再び炸裂する訳ですが、これほど入力過多に思える豪の音でも全く歪んでいないのはもう驚異的というほかありません。しかもこの重心の低い音が鮮やかな鋭さまで併せ持っているのですから、録音位置と使用機材がよほどベストマッチだったのでしょう。「Run Like Hell」はリズムの根幹を創っているパーカッシヴな打音がひとつひとつ綺麗に聴こえるのが特徴です。4分55秒付近から少しずつ入ってくるピアノの装飾音もキラキラと鋭く輝いている事で、リズムと装飾音による縁取りの効いた躍動感が高い次元で愉しめるAUDサウンドになっています。「Waiting For The Worms」は低音と高音が理想的な姿で溶け合っているほか、SBDでは若干バラついたイメージで耳に届いていたリズムも自然な躍動感があるものとして聴こえる事にも気付かされるでしょう。「The Trial」の壁崩壊シーンでは、現代の映画館や5.1chサラウンドもそこのけの凄まじい音像にびっくりされると思います。左右2チャンネルでよくここまで音を拾えたと思われる筈ですし、ここはドキュメンタリー・サウンドとしての生々しさも深く感じて戴ける一幕です。

THE WALLのAUD録音タイトルはこれまでにも当レーベルや他のレーベルから沢山出ていますが、客席からの臨場感をこれだけ維持しつつ超高解像な演奏音が聴けるのは、かなりのレアケースと言って差し支えないでしょう。もちろんSBD録音にはSBDにしか出せない音の近さや鮮明さがあり、プロショット映像には視覚面という大きなアドヴァンテージがある訳ですが、しかし本録音はAUDサウンドにしか出せない演奏音の魅力や、AUD録音だからこそ深く入ってゆけるショウのドキュメンタリー性をその類稀な極上音質でつぶさに教えてくれるのです。最後に「Young Lust」の1分21秒~27秒までの約6秒間だけ、マスターテープの劣化によって左チャンネルの音が擦れて弱くなっています。パッチを充てての補修も可能でしたが、しかしあまりに見事な収録音ですので作為的な事は避け、そこは敢えてオリジナルのまま痕跡を残してあります。また全体の音像調整も厳密なピッチ補正とノイズ除去程度に留めてありますので、過剰なイコライジングが無い収録原音の威力を直球で御堪能戴ける仕上がりになっています。この週末は是非本作で、フロイド1980年の終焉の姿を大団円の客席から噛み締めて下さい。プロショット映像やSBD音源で御馴染みの公演であるからこそ、この初登場AUD録音プレス盤はその慣れ切った感覚に痛烈なビンタを入れ、未知なる興奮を呼び覚ましてくれること請け合いです!!
