Paul’s latest tour, ONE ON ONE Tour, began on April 13, 2016. If the first song is an amazing opening called “A HARD DAY ‘S NIGHT”, it will be a very wonderful concert, together with a fascinating stage performance such as a song that has never been played lately, I am upgrading. For the first time in the tour with this band 14 years, I will not be surprised at the performance of Paul which will evolve further.

The ONE ON ONE tour runs across the three continents with North America, Europe and South America, and the number actually counts 40 performances. Among them, there are several special days such as Minneapolis performances playing “Let’s Go Crazy” and Pioneer Town performances performed with only 300 small bars, but on Indio on October 8 and 15, 2016 The performed concert, DESERT TRIP, also became a special day. On the second day of this work, DESERT TRIP October 15, 2016 is recorded.

This DESERT TRIP is the name of the 6-day rock festival. The first part was held from 7th to 9th October, the 2nd part was from 14th to 16th, on a large scale in the city of Indio, California. Cast performers are all over the legend. Rolling Stones, Nobel Literature Awards Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Roger Waters, THE WHO, and Paul McCartney are somehow luxurious performers. It was a historical festival where all the legendary rock festivals met together like a Kanta, Jiang Xia, Yoneda, North Beppu, Nomo, Suzuki Keiji etc.

【DESERT TRIP Day 2】
This special day is that Neil Young jumped in after the first day and played “A Day In The Life” and “Why Do not We Do It In The Road.” In particular, “A Day In The Life” was sharing vocals as if the first day baton-touched from Neil to Paul, whereas on the other day Paul sang first at the beginning, followed by Neal singing , It is eye-catching that the order is changed. Both of them can respond to only the songs that are singing on their own solo tour, so they probably wanted to change their mood. And as with the day before, “Why Do not We Do It In The Road” is also a long performance with the addition of guitar solos in the second half.

And apart from Neil Young, Rihanna is jumping in as a special guest of the day. Of course the song is “Four Five Seconds”. Kanie West, Rihanna, and Paul, three songs were released in collaboration, and this year we are showing off at the stage with Paul alone. 【Off Line · Sound Board Sound Source】
This work is recorded on off line sound board. In short, it is a sound source recorded on line recording with an external microphone, it was recorded in the same way as the Beatles’ BBC thing and 1963 Liverpool · Empire performances etc. The sound quality is recorded with wonderful high sound quality with nearly no audience noise as you can hear the sample. Those who are unfamiliar to listen to the word off-line soundboard, I would like you to judge by actually listening to the sample sound source rather than explaining with words. Except for the fact that there is a cut between “Here Today” and “Queenie Eye”, why is the sound quality inferior at the beginning of “A Hard Day’s Night”, from the second half of the first track “A Hard Day’s Night” It is recorded with high sound quality off line sound board through the end of “The End”.

This is a record of the sound check on the first day of the desert trip on October 8, with audience recording. 【THE ROLLING STONES October 8, 2016】

【Pappy & Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace October 13, 2016】
As mentioned above, DESERT TRIP was held in two parts and Paul ‘s turn was two days from October 8th and 15th. I will be free for a week. Meanwhile, on October 13, I recorded a secret gig made at Pioneer Town. Pioneer Town is located in Southern California and belongs to a special area called a non-incorporated area, an emotional city where an old wooden building remains in the western play. It is a concert held at the special venue of the pub called Pappy & Harriet’s. It is said that only 300 people who were notified on surprise on the day, only ordinary pubs were able to see this secret gig fortunately. ONE ON ONEツアーは北米、欧州、南米と3大陸を縦断し、その本数は実に40公演を数える。そんな中でも、「Let’s Go Crazy」を演奏したミネアポリス公演や、わずか300人の小さなバーで行なったパイオニアタウン公演など、特別な日はいくつかあるが、2016年10月8日と15日にインディオで行なわれたコンサート、DESERT TRIPもまた、特別な日となった。本作はその二日目、2016年10月15日DESERT TRIPを収録している。

このDESERT TRIPというのは6日間に渡るロック・フェスティバルの名称である。第一部が10月7日から9日、第二部が14日から16日と、カリフォルニアのインディオという都市で大規模に行われた。なにせ出演者がレジェンド揃い。ローリング・ストーンズ、ノーベル文学賞ボブ・ディラン、ニールヤング、ロジャー・ウォータース、THE WHO、そしてポール・マッカートニーと、なんとも豪華な出演者たちである。まるで金田、江夏、米田、北別府、野茂、鈴木啓二らでローテーションを組んだような、まさにロック界のレジェンドが一同に会した歴史的フェスティバルであった。

【DESERT TRIP 二日目】
この日が特別なのは、初日に続いてニール・ヤングが飛び入りして「A Day In The Life」と「Why Don’t We Do It In The Road」を演奏したことであろう。特に「A Day In The Life」は、初日がニールからポールへバトンタッチするかのようにヴォーカルを分け合っていたのに対し、この日は逆に最初をポールが歌い、続いてニールが歌うというふうに、順番を入れ替えているのが目を引く。両者とも自分のソロツアーで歌っている曲だけに、いずれも対応可であり、故に気分を変えてみたかったのだろう。そして「Why Don’t We Do It In The Road」も前日同様、後半にギターソロを加えて長い演奏になっている。

そして、ニール・ヤングとは別に、この日のスペシャル・ゲストとしてリアーナが飛び入りしている。曲はもちろん「Four Five Seconds」である。カニエ・ウェストとリアーナ、そしてポールの三者によるコラボで発表された曲で、今年からポール単独でステージで披露している。リアーナと一緒にステージでこの曲を歌うのはこれが最初である。

さらに、この日は重要な初演曲がある。それがアンコールにおける「Rip It Up」である。ゲットバック・セッションでビートルズが演奏していたのでマニアにはお馴染みの曲であろう。意外やソロになってからスタジオ、ライヴ、問わずポールが人前で歌うのはこれが最初である。短めの演奏ながら、しっかりとしたバンド・アレンジとなっており聴き応えがある。

その他、このコンサートで特記すべきことは、MCにてボブ・ディランのノーベル文学賞に祝辞を述べているところだろう。「おめでとう！ボブ・ディランのノーベル平和賞！そしてチャック・ベリーが90歳になったことに！」

【オフ・ライン・サウンドボード音源】
本作はオフ・ライン・サウンドボードで収録されている。端的に言えばライン録音のものを外部マイクで収録された音源で、古くはビートルズのBBC物や1963年リバプール・エンパイア公演などと同じ手法で録音されている。音質はサンプルを聴いていただければわかる通り、観客ノイズがほぼ皆無の素晴らしい高音質で収録されている。オフ・ライン・サウンドボードという言葉に聴き慣れない方は、言葉で説明するよりも、実際にサンプル音源を聴いて判断して欲しい。なぜか「A Hard Day’s Night」の冒頭で音質が劣る点、そして「Here Today」と「Queenie Eye」の間にカットがある点を除けば、1曲目の「A Hard Day’s Night」後半から通して「The End」の最後まで通して高音質オフ・ライン・サウンドボードで収録されている。

【オーディエンス音源】
本作にはさらにオーディエンス音源でもこのデザート・トリップ二日目を完全収録している。音質はサウンドボードと思ってしまうほどの高音質なもので、デザート・トリップを収録した他のアーティストが軒並み高音質揃いなのを鑑みるに、当日のPAがかなり良かったのであろうと思われる。前述のオフ・ライン・サウンドボード音源に優るとも劣らない素晴らしい音質であるので、この歴史的なコンサートをまた別の側面から伝えてくれる音源となるであろう。

【IN-LINE SOUNDBOARD】
本編の後は、関連音源が収録されている。このイン・ライン・サウンドボードは、本編のオフ・ライン・サウンドボードの対義語であり、不完全ながら「A Hard Day’s Night」と「Got To Get You Into My Life」の2曲が、本来の意味でのサウンドボードで収録されている。

【SOUNDCHECK October 8, 2016】
これはデザート・トリップ初日10月8日のサウンドチェックの模様をオーディエンス録音で収録したものである。特にこのイベントのハイライトである「I Wanna Be Your Man」と「Why Don’t We Do It In The Road」の2曲が含まれている事が幸運といえる。何せ初演の曲であるため、入念にリハーサルが重ねられたのであろう。

【THE ROLLING STONES October 8, 2016】
DESERT TRIP初日に、ローリング・ストーンズは、なんとビートルズの「Come Together」を演奏した。ストーンズがこの曲を演奏するのはまさに初めてで、その場にいた誰もが驚かされた選曲であった。どういう過程でこの曲が演奏されたのかは不明だが、あまり練られておらず、ミックの歌詞はめちゃくちゃである。このストーンズの「Come Together」を受けて、初日にポールが「彼氏になりたい」で返礼することになる。余談になるが、マイケル・ジャクソンといい、エアロスミスといい、この曲はカバーが好まれるのだろう。

【Pappy & Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace October 13, 2016】
前述のように、DESERT TRIPは2部にわけて開催されており、ポールの出番は10月8日と15日の二日間であった。1週間空くことになる。その間、10月13日に、パイオニアタウンで行なわれたシークレット・ギグを収録している。パイオニアタウンは南カリフォルニアに位置し、非法人化地域という特別区域に属し、西部劇に出てくるような古い木造の建物が残っている情緒ある街である。そこにあるPappy & Harriet’sというパブの特設会場で行なわれたコンサートである。当日にサプライズで告知され、会場が普通のパブだけに、幸運にもこのシークレット・ギグを見れたのは僅か300人だったと言われている。数万人の前で演奏する合間に、このような小さなパブで演奏する、この落差が面白いではないか。通常のコンサートではグランド・ピアノで演奏される「Hey Jude」も、この日はステージに設置された鍵盤だけのミニ・ピアノというから珍しい。
なお、当日の様子を伝える報道では「A Hard Day’s Night」で始まったとされているが、本作を聴いていただければわかる通り、オープニング・ナンバーが「Save Us」という珍しいセットリストである。DESERT TRIPの2公演では演奏されなかった「Save Us」「Junior’s Farm」を演奏しているのも興味深いところである。
残念ながらコンサート完全収録ではなく、11曲の収録となっている。小さなパブでのシークレット・ギグという珍しさはあるものの、演奏曲自体はレア・ナンバーがあるわけではないので、せめて雰囲気なりとも楽しんでいただけたらと思う。
