69年～75年まで「アメリカン・ハードロックの雄」として活動し、グランド・ファンク・レイルロードと共に一時代を築いた全盛期のマウンテン唯一の来日公演から、1973年８月25日の日本武道館公演を非常に良好なモノラル・オーディエンス録音で完全収録したファクトリー・プレスCD。クリームのプロデューサーだったフェリックス・パパラルディが見出したギタリスト、レズリー・ウェストと共に結成したこのバンドは、72年にパパラルディのドラッグ中毒から一時活動休止に追い込まれたが、それが癒えての活動開始の最初がこの来日公演だった。この来日が急遽「ウェスト、ブルース＆レイング」の予定から振り替えられたものだっただけに、バックには急造メンバーとしてパパラルディが声を掛けたアラン・シュワルツバーグ(彼は後に一流セッション・ドラマーとなる)、ボブ(ロバート)・マンが起用された。急造とは言えパパラルディ、ウェストの二人が揃っていれば、それがマウンテンだった。ここでは全盛期の彼らの重厚で自由奔放なパフォーマンスが余すところなく、迫力満点のサウンドで収められている。当時のコンサート評では、本番前にキメたドラッグが祟って、ウェストの調子が今ひとつだったとあったが、本作を聴く限りではオープニング・ナンバーの冒頭の歌詞がなかなか出てこなかったり、名曲6.のイントロではチューニングが狂って苦しんでいたりという場面はあるものの、概して彼らしい豪放なプレイを聴くことができる。特に聴きものは、30分にも及ぼうかという6.で、ここではボブ・マンがギターもキーボードも弾けるプレイヤーだったことが幸いして、ウェストと向こうを張るツイン・リードでのスリリングなインプロヴィゼーションが延々と展開される。彼らの来日公演は、オフィシャルで『TWIN PEAKS（邦題：異邦の薫り）』というライブ盤がリリースされているが、それは本作の後日程となった大阪公演のものである。そこでも同曲が聴きものになっていたが、改めて本作を聴いて判ったことは、オフィシャル・ライブの同曲のインプロで採り入れられ、インプロ展開のキーとなっているフレーズが本作で既にプレイされていたことだ。つまり本公演でこの曲の展開が方向付けられることになったということだろう。ここにはマウンテン来日公演、オフィシャル・ライブ盤の原点があるということである。ボリュームを大きくして、当時にタイムトリップしていただきたい。
