ロックの怪物が怪物らしく全世界を蹂躙し尽くした“USE YOUR ILLUSION TOUR”。その大全盛期を収めた極上プロショットがプレスDVDで登場です。本作に収められているのは「1992年４月９日ローズモント公演」のマルチカメラ・プロショット。以前から定番として知られるプロショットですが、近年になって発見された最高級マスターを永久保存の２枚組プレスDVDに封じ込めた逸品なのです。
そのクオリティは、90年代でも最高級のもの。時代柄アナログ撮影なのは当然ですが、鮮度バツグンのマスターには経年劣化もほとんどなく、発色もディテールの鮮やかさも怖ろしく美しい。線ノイズやトラッキング・ノイズの類もまるでなく、まさに25年前の光景がそっくり画面いっぱいに広がる映像美なのです。もちろん、撮影・カメラワークに関しては、長年ツアー代表の王座を死守してきただけはある完璧ぶり。いかにも卓直結なステレオサウンドボードには歓声がほとんどないため“現場感”では半歩譲るものの、その代わりに超ド級なダイレクト感は凄絶。ギターはそれこそ弦のこすれる音までもが鮮烈で、アクセル・ローズのヴォーカルは息づかいまでもが耳元に流し込まれる。既発の中には「Paradise City」がカットされているものもありますが、本作は文字通りの最長・最良バージョン。ある意味、公式映像『USE YOUR ILLUSION I&II』よりも強烈ななプロショット作品です。
そんなクオリティで描かれたGUNS N’ ROSESは、まさに世界を蹂躙する怪物ぶりを遺憾なく見せつけてくれる。そもそも、この“USE YOUR ILLUSION TOUR”は２回の来日公演も含め、２年半にも及ぶ巨大ツアー。現在では数年にまたがるツアーも珍しくありませんが、当時にしては破格でした。良い機会ですので、まずはツアー全容の中からポジションをイメージしてみましょう。

これが“USE YOUR ILLUSION TOUR”の道のり。本作のローズモント公演は公式映像にもなった「日本#1」の直後となる「北米#3」の最終日。全194公演中80公演目のコンサートにあたる。ちょうど長いロード生活の中盤に差し掛かったあたりで、本領爆発中なタイミングなのです。
その横綱相撲ぶりは、ロック史上にも類い希。冷静に考えれば、当時はアクセルも30歳になったばかりだったわけですが、時代の寵児として君臨していた貫禄は絶大。歌っても、語っても、ピアノをつま弾いても、猛烈にサマになって全身から大物オーラを発散している。その一挙手一投足に大観衆が狂う。先ほど「歓声はほとんどない」と言いましたが、遠く遠くに微かに収録されていても分かる大歓声が狂っているのです。
カメラワークは、そんなアクセルを中心としながらも、スラッシュ＆ダフとのフロントラインをキッチリと押さえきっている。ダブのゴリゴリしたビートに、スラッシュのねちっこいギターが乗り、アクセルのカメレオンヴォイス歌い吠える……。ホーンが被ろうと、コーラスが飾ろうと、核の３人の音が絡むマジックは揺るがない。今更になって、「大所帯でロックバンドらしくない」「イジーがいなくっちゃ」等々と鼻息の荒かった当時の自分を叱り飛ばしたい。GUNSの魔法がしっかりと刻まれていながら、なんていう贅沢をほざいていやがったんだと……。
特に美味しいのは「Coma」と続く「Don’t Cry」の２連発でしょう。「Coma」は現在の再編GUNSでこそ定番となっていますが、当時はホンの数回しか演奏記録がなかった。その激レア・テイクをプロショットで見られるのです。そして、次曲「Don’t Cry」ではゲストにBLIND MELONの故シャノン・フーンが参加しています。当時はまだデビュー作『BLIND MELON』の制作中であり、無名の仲間を世に知らしめるためにデュエットするアクセルの姿が垣間見える。まさか、この３年後に非業の死を迎えるとは誰も想像が付かずに……。

兎にも角にも、大定番プロショットの史上最高峰バージョンです。怪物GUNS N’ ROSESの大全盛期を３時間以上に渡って押さきった最長・最良マスター。その輝きをプレスDVDにパンパンに詰め込んだ２枚組。アクセル／スラッシュ／ダフの再訪が目前に迫った“今”を、これ以上なく熱くする１本。今週末、あなたのお手元にお届けいたします。
