今週はまたまたエリック・クラプトンの完全未公開マスターを一挙リリースです！まずはプレス4CDにて、1993年のジャパンツアーより、2日間行なわれた横浜アリーナ公演を両日カップリングしたのが本盤です。使用されたオリジナルDATマスターは、現代のオーディエンス録音の基準に照らしても「極上」と断言できる素晴らしい音質で2日間が完全収録されています。

それもそのはず、このマスターは過去にTriconeレーベルよりリリースされた、エリック・クラプトンの日本公演81年から90年までの一連の高音質プレス盤(「British Pride」、「Perpetual Black」、「Caught In The Act」、「No Turning Back」、「Two Edged Sword」、「Gold Flavor」、「Principle Of God」、「Definition of Legacy」、「Journey Of Faith」、「Terminal Port」等）でお馴染みの、日本を代表する名テーパーによる録音なのです。（2年前にリリースされ、あまりの高音質にコレクターを驚愕させた、、同じ1993年来日公演シリーズ「BLUES LEAVE ME ALONE」(10/12 東京）、「GROANING THE BLUES」（10/13 東京）、「AIN’T NOBODY’S BUSINESS」（10/14 名古屋）、「HOW LONG BLUES」（10/18 大阪）、「KIDMAN BLUES」（10/19 大阪）、「COUNTY JAIL BLUES」（10/21 東京）も全て、同じテーパーによるもの）

ディスク1と2に収録された10月23日は、過去にはまずまず音の良い「BLUE LIGHTS」という既発盤がありましたが、本盤がそれを一蹴してしまいました。本盤を再生した途端、比べものにならないほどクリアでバランスの良い、ド迫力の音が溢れ出してきます。横浜2日目となった10月30日の音源については、今までまったくCD化されたことがありませんでした。本盤のリリースでこの日が初めて日の目を見ることになります。もちろん音質は23日と同様、いやそれをさらに上回る「超極上」レベルです。このツアーでは、バックメンにネイザン・イースト、アンディ・フェアウェザー・ロウというお馴染みのメンバーが起用されていましたが、彼らに加え、ジェリー・ポートノイ（ハーモニカ）と4人のホーン・セクションが起用されていたことが特筆すべき事項です。その結果、アレンジ面での変化として現われ、興味深かったのは、Tears In Heavenのようなナンバーでポートノイのハーモニカが聴けたことです。彼のプレイが加味されたことにより、ここで聴く同曲は切なさ極まるバージョンとなっています。また、ホーンが加わったLaylaというのもこのツアーでしか聴けなかったもので、歌の3コーラス目からブイブイ加わってくるホーンの迫力には凄まじいものがあります。クラプトンがこのツアーだけで提示した見事なアレンジだったと言えるでしょう。また、ドラムにはこの時だけの人選として、リトルフィートのリッチー・ヘイワード（今は故人）が起用されていたことにも注目です。彼のドライでテクニカルなドラミングにより、各曲の迫力が増しています。常連メンバーのスティーヴ・ガッドとの趣きの違いを感じていただくのも一興でしょう。セットリストは2日間とも同じでしたが、そこはエリック・クラプトン、各曲で完全なアドリブによるフレーズを畳み掛けています。従って、曲によってどちらの日のプレイがより良かったのか、聴き比べの楽しみもあるのが本盤です。前半をブルースで固めたセットリストから判ることは、この時点でクラプトンにはアルバム「FROM THE CRADLE」の構想が見えていたということでしょう。ライブステージで候補曲を取り上げながら、その感触を確かめていたと言えます。この両日でも出色の出来となっているAin’t Nobody’s Businessが同アルバムに収録されなかったことが不思議ですが、ライブでしか聴けないこの曲のしっとりした演奏をどうぞ本盤でご堪能ください。プレスCDでの限定リリースとなりますので、どうぞお早めのオーダーをお願いします。
