1987年全米ツアー、正式マルチトラック・ライブレコーディング・ファースト・ジェネレーションマスターをダイレクトに収録した今週リリースの第2弾は、4月27日のプロヴィデンス公演になります。本盤も今回同時リリースの「St. Paul 1987」と同じく、イギリス重鎮テーパーから直に借り受けたステレオ・サウンドボードマスターから製作したプレス2CDです。従いまして、そのサウンドクオリティは文句なし、トラブルも皆無なのでこのまま正規ライブアルバムですと謳ってもまったく問題のないタイトルとなっています。この日のサウンドボード音源も過去にはリリースされていますが、本盤が正真正銘オリジナルであり、ファースト・ジェネレーションのマスターを使用したものです。この日は全編で凄まじいパフォーマンスが展開されており、聴きどころは「すべて」と言ってもいいくらいです。ブートレッグの音質評価サイトとして名高いGeetarzでは、この日の既発のサウンドボードタイトルの掲載ページで、「knock out performance!（感嘆するしかない演奏）」と表記しています。このツアーの流出サウンドボードタイトルが多い中で断定的にこの評価を下したのですから、いかにこの日のプレイが凄かったかということでしょう。それは是非このオリジナルマスターから最高音質で収録した本盤で確認していただきたいところです。今回、「St. Paul 1987」と聴き比べましたところ、そのサウンドクオリティ、ステレオセパレーション、各楽器サウンドの粒立ち具合、オーディエンスの歓声とのバランス等、すべての点におきまして甲乙つけ難いというのが正直な感想でした。つまりどちらのマスターも凄かったのです。この年のツアーからはサウンドボード録音の流出音源から製作されたブートレッグが多くリリースされていますが、その最高峰に君臨するのが今回リリースの2作と言ってもいいでしょう。セットリストを見ますと、本盤ではセント・ポール公演ではプレイしていなかったFurther On Up The Roadがアンコールの１曲目でプレイされています。デビュー当時からクラプトンのプレイはアドリブ主体で日によって変化してきました。それがライブアーティストである彼のアイデンティティでもありました。このステージでも当然全曲でセント・ポール公演とはまったく異なるソロ、フレーズをプレイしています。しかもセント・ポール公演よりも１曲多くプレイしたとなれば、本盤も聴いていただくしかないでしょう。この日のSame Old Bluesは22分に渡っています。この長尺パフォーマンスもまた凄まじいものです。自信作「AUGUST」を引っ提げ、アルバムと同じメンバーをバックに従えて臨んだクラプトンのライブの新境地がここに捉えられています。このツアーで彼が使用したのは、現在のシグネイチャーモデルに繋がっていくプロトタイプのピューター・グレイ・フィニッシュのカスタム・ストラトでした。前々年に引退させたブラッキーとはまったく異なるトレブリーなトーンで弾き捲るクラプトンがここにいます。これほどアグレッシヴなクラプトンは、この時代から「ジャーニーマン」までの期間限定だったと言ってもいいでしょう。是非、本盤で「攻撃的な」クラプトンをご堪能ください。
