ボウイ11枚目のオリジナル・アルバム『HEROES』、邦題で言うと『英雄夢語り』は1977年にリリースされた。ブライアンイーノとコラボをした『ロウ』『間借人』と本作を俗に三部作とされるが、どちらかと言えば前作『ロウ』に近い構成となっている。その特徴としてはインストの曲が約半分を占めている点である。しかし『ロウ』がB面が全てインストという構成だったのに対し、流石にやり過ぎたと思ったのか、『英雄夢語り』では最後を「アラビアの神秘」という歌入りで締めくくり、全体のバランスをとっているようにも思える。

タイトル曲の「ヒーローズ」はもちろんボウイの代表曲であり、コンサートにおいても常に重要な位置を占める、最も有名なボウイ・ナンバーのひとつであろう。レコーディングは1977年5月にベルリンで行なわれた。前作『ロウ』から1年も経たずにリリースされたため、ほぼ同時期の録音かと思われがちだが、実際は半年くらいのスパンがある。しかし半年といえば現在のスピードから見ればほぼ同時期と言っても差し支えなかろう。前述のように『間借人』を含め三部作と言われるが、アルバムの色彩、構成、傾向からみても、『ロウ』と『英雄夢語り』の2作をツイン・アルバムと表現した方がしっくりくる。本作はその『英雄夢語り』のセッション音源を収録したものである。

本作の構成は4種に分類されている。注目すべきは「ヒーローズ」のアウトテイクである。ボウイが比較的リラックスした様子で流して歌っている別ヴォーカルであり、これもまた素晴らしい歌唱である。しかしオリジナル・バージョンのような緊張感に欠け、やはりこれは仮当ての別テイクであることがわかる。その他、詳細は裏ジャケットを参照して欲しい。

ボウイの名盤『英雄夢語り』のセッション音源を収録した本作。この名盤のセッション音源として貴重なものであることには違いない。美しいピクチャーディスク仕様の永久保存がっちりプレス盤。
