1978年5月23日、シェアズ・バッファロー・シアター。この日はスプリングスティーン・マニアにとってある種の神聖な響きすらある一日でした。それはこの日からあのダークネス・ツアーが始まったからです。しかもツアー前半ではアンコールであのThe Promiseが毎晩のように限って演奏されていた訳ですが、この日に限ってその曲がE・ストリート・バンドを従えたフルバンド・バージョンで演奏されたことがこの日を伝説的な一日へと昇格させていたのでした。この時のフルバンド・バージョンも今やオフィシャルのダークネス・ボックスでスタジオ・バージョンが簡単に聴ける時代となりましたが、それをライブ・ステージで演奏したこの日のアンコールの場面、これは本当に神々しいものとして今もまったく色褪せていません。
その演奏だけでもこの日のステージを聴く価値があまりにも大きいのですが、全体の演奏やステージに関しても、ツアー初日とはいえ、まだびっくりするくらい構成が決まっていない点はもはや笑いを禁じ得ないほどではないでしょうか。この後すぐにステージ構成が固定されることを考えると、これはほとんど公開リハーサルの域ではないかと思える（この日だけ小さな会場を使ったこともそれをほのめかしています）ほどです。何しろThunder RoadとRacing In The Streetは分断されて演奏される、Streets Of Fireはこの日こそ演奏されたものの、以降は一度封印されてしまうという不思議な扱い。そしてアンコールで演奏されるカバーはYou Can’t Sit Downというまるで77年のようなフィナーレ。もう、これだけでも突っ込みどころ満載、聴きどころ満載なショウだと言えるでしょう。
それにスプリングスティーンもまだアルバムが発売されていなかった「闇に吠える街」からの新曲に関しては歌い方を模索しているようで、それもRacing In The Streetで顕著です。非常に朗々とした調子で、後のようなハスキー・ボイスを使わずに歌う点は本当に新鮮。さらにツアー序盤はアルバムのバージョンよりキーを上げたライブ・アレンジでスプリングスティーンがギターを弾きまくるProve It All Night。そして何よりも、アルバム「闇に吠える街」からのナンバーはこの日がすべてライブ初演となった励起してきな一日でもありました。
元々ファンに絶大な人気を誇るダークネス・ツアーですが、その中でもこれほどレアな演奏内容だった初日バッファローは音源のリリースが待ち望まれていたものです。ところが従来存在していたこの日のオーディエンス録音は音質がお世辞にもよいとは言えず、それが災いしてCD-Rが細々とリリースされるだけに留まり、結果としてはトレーダー・レベルの熱心なファンの間だけで語り継がれるレジェンダリー・ショウという域を出るものではありませんでした。ウルトラ・レアなダークネス・ツアーの初日が誰でも楽しめるアイテムというのは、もはやファンにとって悲願とも言えるものだったのです。
そんな中で数年前、遂にこの日の別音源が発掘されました。何しろ音質は格段に向上し、同じモノラルのオーディエンス録音でありながらも、従来の音源とはまったく比較にならないクオリティで聴けるようになりました。序盤はツアー初日ということもあって会場からの出音自体が弱めな印象を受けます。ところが、先のProve It All NightやRacing In The Streetの頃になるとすっかりバランスの良いものとなり、俄然良好な音質へ進化を遂げました。小さな会場の空気感もしっかりと伝わってくる素晴らしい音質だと言えるでしょう。
ショウが後半に差し掛かったBackstreetsの終盤がテープチェンジに当たっており、そこで生まれた欠落部分、そこへ先に触れた従来の音源をパッチしています。この部分を聴いていただければ、その音質の違いをはっきりと実感していただけるかと思います。ファンなら誰もが待ち焦がれていた「ダークネス・ツアー初日」のアップグレード音源、それが遂にプレスのディスクでのリリースが実現となりました。アンコールにおける感動のThe Promiseはもちろん、この全編が聴きどころと言えるレアなショウを心ゆくまでお楽しみください！
