ボブ・ディラン2001年の来日公演はもう十年以上前のことなのですね。時が経つのは早いものです。この時の来日ではCD-Rのリリースに偏ってしまったこと、さらにはツアー中盤以降のライブを収録したアイテムばかりにも偏ってしまったという不思議なツアーでした。そうして前半の関東エリアのライブに関してのリリースが極端に少なかったことは今も昔もマニアにとって大きな不満となり続けていたものです。今振り返ってみても本当に不思議ですよね。そんなマニアの溜飲を下げてくれるアイテムがようやく登場いたします。
　今回は前半の関東エリアでのライブの中でも間違いなくベストであったと思われる3月4日の東京公演二日目を収録。しかもその音質は文句なしのエクセレントなオーディエンス録音で収録。オープニングの「Duncan And Brady」こそ、会場からの出音が弱かったかのような音圧ですが、以降は圧巻のクリアネスと音圧がリスナーを2001年へとあっという間にタイムスリップさせてくれる極上な音質。中でも三人のギター・プレイヤーが奏でる音のリアルさは思わず息を呑んでしまうことでしょう。そうです、当時は当たり前のことに思っていたことですが、この時のディランは「ギターを弾いていた」のです。今やシンガー兼ピアノ・プレイヤーとなった感のある彼ですが、2001年のディランと言えばあのリード・ギター弾きまくり状態。やはりディランはギターを弾く姿がしっくりきますよね。しかもそんな彼のプレイを始めとしたギター・サウンドがリアルに押し出されたバランスは本当に魅力的。
　それ以上に今回のリリースにおいてこの日を選んだのは、何よりもディランの日本公演史上においてもっとも魅力的なセットリストだと言っても過言ではないこの日の演奏内容です。ライブの序盤からしていきなりファースト・アルバムからの「Song To Woody」が演奏されています。しかも日本での演奏は現在に至るまでこれが唯一の演奏というレアなもの。この演奏こそがこの日の豪華なレパートリーの幕開けとなったのでした。
　その後の選曲はと言えば、これはもう「HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED」と「BLONDE ON BLONDE」というディランが60年代に残した二大名盤の収録曲がふんだんに演奏された最強のセットリストなのです。前者から「Desolation Row」や「Like A Rolling Stone」、後者からは「Absolutely Sweet Marie」に「Visions Of Johanna」そして「Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat」ときました。これだけのクラシックがズラリと演奏されたセットリストに不満を感じる人などいないはず。しかもディランやバンドの演奏は掛け値なしに絶好調で、アコースティックとエレクトリックのコントラストが絶妙な演奏ぶりにも耳を奪われてしまいます。この見事なステージ構成も2001年ツアーの魅力でした。
　ここまで挙げたような60年代の名曲がズラリと並んだセットリストも現在のディラン・ライブからは考えられないこと。しかしそれだけでなく、アンコールでもこのツアーでは唯一の「Forever Young」というサプライズがありました。その感動的な演奏は毎晩ライブの締めくくりに演奏されていた「Blowin’ In The Wind」を待たずにライブが終わってもおかしくないほどだったのですが、そこからまた代表曲が続けて演奏されるという、これまためくるめくような展開で締めくくられています。そして今回、ボーナスにはやはりツアーの前半だけで演奏されていたレア・ナンバー二曲を収録。これらも初CD化のレアなものです。近年の曲を中心としてライブを行うようになった今、この日のライブはベスト盤ライブと言っても過言ではありません。そんな来日公演から伝説の一日を収めた極上音源が遂に限定のプレスCDアイテムによるリリースが実現します！
