【LIVERPOOL EMPIRE December 7, 1963】
本作のメインとなるのは1963年12月7日のリバプール・エンパイア公演。このリバプール公演はファンクラブ会員2500人の聴衆の前で行なわれた、ワン・ステージ完全収録としてはビートルズ最古の音源にあたる。初期ならではの珍しいセット・リストとあいまって、後の有名なビートルズの大掛かりなステージとは赴きが異なる、渡米前の貴重な記録となっている。このコンサートはコンサート当日の夜、“IT’S THE BEATLES”と題された番組で即日放送され、全英のファンが目にするところとなった。1曲目が「From Me To You」で始まり、1964年以降はステージで採り上げなくなった珍しい「Till There Was You」や「Money」などを含め、後のアメリカン・ツアーなどとは構成が全く異なるセットリスト。コンサートの最後を締めくくるのは「From Me To You」のインスト・ヴァージョン。もちろんビートルズの生演奏である。ライブ音源が多く残されている1964年や1965年あたりを聞き慣れた耳にはとても新鮮に感じられるだろう。

ＣＤのディスク１は「It’s The Beatles」というタイトルで放送されたリバプール・エンパイアでのライヴを完全収録している。1963年のこの時期のライヴで残された音源は、断片的なものを除けばこのリバプー・ルエンパイア公演が唯一のもので、非常に貴重な初期のツアーのステージ完全収録とあって、古くから定番音源として親しまれてきた。しかし、今まで聴くことが出来たのは、当時のテレビ放送をテレビの前にマイクを立てて録音した「ライン録音をオフラインで録音」という音源しかなかった。その音源は、ここでは「OFF LINE TAPE」としてディスク2に収録されている。古くからのマニアにとっては、これもまた味のある耳に馴染んだ音源であろう。既発タイトルではこのオフライン音源はアナログ落としの収録しかなかったが、本作ではきちんとテープソースから収録している点が特長である。

その後、2000年代に入って、放送の際にジャックをテレビに繋げ録音された、本来の意味でのライン録音のバージョンがyoutubeを介して登場した。従来のものとは格段にアップした音質は、さすがオンライン録音であると認識させられるもので、ビートルズの新たな発掘音源として話題となったものであった。それがディスク1の後半に収録されている「ON LINE TAPE VERSION 2」に相当する。

そして本作の目玉は、そのオンライン録音でも、youtubeなどネット経由でない、さらに音質アップしたオンライン音源を収録している点にある。それがディスク1の前半に収録されている「ON LINE TAPE VERSION 1」である。前述のようにyoutubeを介して初登場したオンライン音源は、やはりというか、オフライン音源よりも優れているとはいえ、音質的にはインターネット経由の圧縮された感が否めないものであった。しかしこのON LINE TAPE VERSION 1は、そのようなネット経由ではない、本来の録音媒体からの収録となっているため、現状考えうる最高の音質となっている。その音質差は歴然としており、これはぜひディスク2の「ON LINE TAPE VERSION 2」と聴き比べていただきたいと思う。もちろん1963年の音源なので現代の音と比べることは出来ないが、レンジの広がりといい、厚みのあるクリアな音像は、まさにマスターからのクオリティであることが明白であり、最高の音質で収録されている。

ディスク2の後半には映像付随のサウンドトラックからも、このリバプール公演を収録している。こちらはDVD収録の映像付随のサウンドトラックで、音質的には最も優れている。しかし後述の通り、映像は完全には残っておらず、従ってここでも断片的な収録にとどまっている。

まとめると、本作には上記4バージョンが収録されている。最も音質が優れているのがバージョン4であり、完全収録のバージョン1から3の中ではバージョン1が今回初登場で最も優れているということになる。アナログ時代からのファンにはバージョン3が耳にしっくりくるかもしれない。それぞれの歴史的経緯も考慮に入れると一長一短があるので、ぜひこの全てのバージョンを本作で楽しんで欲しいと思う。また本作で全てのバージョンが最高の状態で収録されているので、コレクションとしても決定盤になるであろう。

【JUKE BOX JURY】
ディスク2の最後は、リバプール・エンパイア公演と同じ日に収録されたテレビ番組「JUKE BOX JURY」の音源を収録している。テレビ出演ということだが、残念ながら映像は残されておらず、本作に収録されている音源のみが、現在確認できる唯一の「JUKE BOX JURY」である。この時の写真は鮮明なカラーで残されているとあって、目にする機会が多いのではないだろうか。表ジャケット写真の左下の写真を参照して欲しい。この番組はクイズ番組で、ビートルズは回答者として出演。曲を聴いて、それがヒットするかどうかを判断してパネルを上げるという、まあ今となっては他愛ないバラエティ番組でしかないが、ビートルズのメンバーがこのような番組に演奏以外で出演するというのが非常にレアではないだろうか。

【IT’S THE BEATLES】
リバプール・エンパイア公演は「It’s The Beatles」というタイトルで放送されたことで、映像としても残されている。しかし残念ながらコンサート完全収録ではなく、放送時間の都合で映像が残されているのは、わずか数曲にとどまっている。それでも初期の貴重な映像作品ということで、マニアにとっては重要なものとなっている。本作はこのIT’S THE BEATLESと題されたリバプール・エンパイア公演を残存する放送映像、流出映像、ニュースリール、カメラ違いなどを全て収録している初めてのタイトルとなる。初期の若々しい世界に出る前のビートルズの瞬間を捉えた非常に見ごたえのあるライヴである。

まず最初は画質がアップグレードし、かつTCRやロゴが入らないバージョンである。画質の違いは一目瞭然であり、ここまでのアップグレードはかつてなかったものである。当然1963年の映像なので白黒映像なのだが、従来のものは白黒といってもカラーCMYKの白と黒という感じで、うっすらと緑がかった映像であったが、本作は濃淡のメリハリのついたグレースケールの白と黒という感じで、従来にない鮮明な映像は驚きをもって迎えられるだろう。しかもTCRやロゴが入らないバージョンは初登場である。どのような過程で流出したものか不明ながら、ドラムに誘われて始まる「I Saw Her Standing There」は他では見られないアレンジであるし、それぞれが断片ながら貴重なものであろう。最初のトラックそれぞれが断片であること、そして客席を中心に撮影されていることから、放送用の熱狂的な観客の様子を伝える挿入シークエンスとして撮影されたものと思われる。

「抱きしめたい」は例の如くイントロで慌ててスイッチを入れたかのようなヨレから始まるが、その後は安定したプロショット映像で収録されている。首を振ってベースをかき鳴らすポールに、この時点で既に落ち着いた雰囲気のジョン、そして演奏後に深々とお辞儀をするメンバー。まさに典型的なビートルズ・スタイルのステージである。MCをポールが入れている間、ジョンはふざけたポーズをとり、客席をからかうような仕草を入れているのも、ビートルズらしさが表れている場面である。そしてライヴ演奏しているシーンとしては唯一の「マネー」も素晴らしい。ネックから手を放してガニマタ気味に構えたジョンが実に力強いヴォーカルを披露。ポールがうなるようなベースを弾きながら、ジョージと共にコーラスを入れる。リズムをとる足元を接写するなどカメラワークも優れている。「ツイスト・アンド・シャウト」はまだこの頃はオープニング・ナンバーではなく、ビートルズのライヴではお馴染みのア～ア～ア～というコーラスで始まるのではなく、レコードと同じようなイントロで始まるバージョンである。途中「WITH THE BEATLES」のジャケットに使われた写真のパネルがステージ後方に降りてくるというのも、当時としては斬新な演出だったのではないだろうか。エンディングは「From Me To You」のインスト・バージョンである。ジョンとジョージが目を合わせて笑いながら、飛び跳ねて演奏している様子が微笑ましい。

このリバプール・エンパイア公演は会場内外の様子も当時のニュースリールとして残されている。会場を訪れるファンの様子、チケットを手にしたファンが居並ぶ中、スタッフがチケットの種類に応じて入口を指示している様子、そして実際のライヴはニュース映像ということで放送されたものとは別ショット。特にメンバーの中でもパフォーマンスが目立っていたのか、ポールを中心に撮影しているような印象を受ける。ビシッとスーツに身を固めたポールを足元から上に移動するカメラで、スラッとしたポールのカッコよさが際立っている。とにかく本編とは異なる別アングルということで、これもまた貴重な流出映像である。なお、このニュースリール映像は通常バージョンとワイド画面バージョン、そしてCDに収録されていたオンライン音源をシンクロさせたバージョンが合計3バージョンが収録されている。このように別カメラの映像が存在するリバプール・エンパイア公演であるが、最後に2つのカメラをマルチアングルで見比べられるようにした映像を収録している。短いながら興味深いものであろう。

音源ではフル・コンサートが残されている1963年12月7日のリバプール・エンパイア公演であるが、映像としてはここに収録されているものが全てということになる。テープの状態などから、おそらく他の部分は既に存在しないと思われる。

【MOVE OVER DAD】
この後は、同時期に撮影されたビートルズの映像が収録されている。それぞれが文献でのみ知ることが出来たものや、写真では広く出回っているものの、なかなか映像では見ることが出来なかったものである。まず最初は1963年11月13日に収録された「MOVE OVER DAD」である。残念ながらサイレントで音は入っていないが、ビートルズのメンバーが仲良くふざけ合っている様子、カメラ目線でおどけるシーンなどが含まれている。この映像を見ると「僕たちは本当に仲が良かった」というアンソロジーにおけるメンバーのインタビューが本当だったのだと実感できるものである。車に乗り込み、コンサート会場に向かうメンバー。そして同じ時間に会場に集うファンの様子。まだショウ・ビジネスが成熟していない時代の60年代の雰囲気が感じられる。

そしてプリマスでのコンサート前に、テレビ番組「MOVE OVER DAD」のためにインタビューを受けている様子が後半に収録されている。スタジオでのインタビューであるが、ビートルズのメンバーはコートを着用し立ったままで、リンゴに至っては荷物を肩にかけたままである。おそらく会場についてすぐその足でスタジオ入りしたのだろう、当時の多忙なスケジュールの合間を縫っての収録であるというのがわかる。

【LATE SCENE EXTRA】
ビートルズは秋のツアーの後、しばし休暇をとっている。そのツアーの終了後の休暇中にもマンチェスターのグラナダ・テレビに出演している。それがこの「LATE SCENE EXTRA」である。後に「SCENE AT 6:30」という番組でもこの時の映像が流用されている。バックにデイリーエコー紙が拡大されたセットが印象的な、写真では鮮明なカラーで残されている「LATE SCENE EXTRA」であるが、映像は当然ながら白黒映像である。しかし驚くのはそのクオリティである。新たに今回入手した映像は従来にないほど、アップグレードの範疇では収まらない、まるで別物のような鮮明な映像なのである。スタジオでのマイミングなだけにジョンとジョージの楽器なども本来のものとは異なり、次の「This Boy」用の楽器のまま演奏しているのがさすがマイミングで、どうせだから手間を省こうということであろう。曲の合間には司会者との歓談の様子が収録されており、ビートルズに対抗してか髪をくちゃくちゃにした司会者を中心にポールなど大笑いしながら歓談に応じている。

こちらは1963年11月7日に放送されたニュース映像である。空港に降り立ったビートルズのメンバーが、迎えられた関係者に紹介されているシーンから始まり、空港での一室だろうか、簡易的なソファーに座ってインタビューを受けている。マイクは司会者の持つ1本のみで、飛行機が飛び立つ騒音でインタビューが中断するなど、今では考えられない状況でのインタビューである。その他、ビートルズが宿泊しているホテルに詰めかけた若い女性ファンを必死で整理する警官や、その様子をレポートするアナウンサーの様子が収録されている。インタビュアーがファンにもみくちゃにされているのが面白い。

【DRESS ROOM INTERVIEW 1963】
コンサート前に行なわれた楽屋でのインタビューである。ジョンは既にステージ用の襟なしスーツ姿であるのに対し、他のメンバーはまだ会場に到着したままの服装なので、まさにこれはコンサート直前の準備の時間を縫って行なわれたインタビューであるのがわかる。メンバーに年齢を訪ねるインタビュアーに対し、それぞれポールが21、ジョージに至ってはハタチと、わかっていたことではあるが、改めてビートルズの若き時代であることが伺える。
