マニア必携Mクローデル・レーベルより、ビートルズ2度目の北米ツアーとなる1965年夏のツアーを集大成したタイトルがリリースになります。前年の初のアメリカンツアーがハードスケジュールの中で長期に渡ったのに対し、ビートルズ自身の疲労や収益を考慮し、この年のアメリカン・ツアーはスタジアムを中心とした大会場で演奏することにより、動員数を図りつつ公演数を減らすといったスケジュールが組まれました。今や伝説となったシェアスタジアム公演は、このツアーの初日にあたります。1965年といえばビートルズのアメリカでの人気がピークに達した時期であり、その熱狂たるや、現代に至るビートルズのエピソードの数々が生まれたのもこの時期といえます。 

　その熱狂の象徴が、初日にあたるシェアスタジアムであることは疑いありませんが、その他、各地でスタジアム級の会場を満席に埋め尽くし、絶頂期のビートルズを存分に披露しました。本作は、既にMクローデルから単体でリリースされているシェアスタジアム、ハリウッドボウル、そしてヒューストン公演を除き、それら以外の1965年のUSツアーの音源と映像を集大成したタイトルになります。 

　まずCDのディスク１は8月18日アトランタ公演を収録しています。90年代後半になって発掘された音源で、その音質はもとより、ポールがベースの弦を切るくらいの迫力ある演奏が堪能できるライヴとして有名なアトランタ公演。本作はソースの異なる2種類の音源をそれぞれ収録しています。このアトランタ公演は、出所不明ながら現地のラジオ局が秘密裏に録音していたのではないかと言われている音源で、ディスク１の前半は最も高音質と言われるサウンドボード・バージョンを収録。既発盤ではオーバーレベル気味であったり、高音が強調されシンバルの音がシャンシャンうるさかったり、あるいはビンテージ音源の宿命ともいうべき不安定なピッチと、高音質ではあるものの、難点も諸所に見られる音源でした。本作ではまずピッチを正常な数値に合わせ、本来その場で演奏されたどおりのものに修正を施しています。さらに音質は、高音を抑え自然な響きを再現。今までで最も聴きやすいものになっています。そして後半は、クレジットではブロードキャスト・バージョンとなっていますが、ラジオで放送されたという記録はなく、果たしてどのような出自を持つ音源なのかはいまだ持って不明。音質こそ前半に収録のサウンドボード・バージョンに及びませんが、変な雑音がない分、演奏や歌唱の細部まではっきり聴きとることができます。音質の異なる二つのソース、もちろん大元は同じでしょうが、出回ったルートが異なり、このような二種類のバージョンが存在するということでしょうか。 

　このアトランタ公演を語る際に、常に話題になるのは「Baby’s In Black」です。このイントロで大元のソースではギターの音がビンビンと二度ダブる部分があります。これが単なるテープのミスなのか、実際にこのように演奏されたのかは議論の割れるところで、マニアの間でも結論が出ていません。本作では、二度このように鳴らすとリズムが合わない事から、これはテープに録音ないしダビングする際のミスと判断しました。よって前半のサウンドボード・バージョンではこの箇所に修正が施されています。ただし後半のブロードキャスト・バージョンは、本来のソースに忠実に収録ということで、ダブりはそのまま残されています。ぜひ本作に収録の両バージョンで聴き比べて頂きたく思います。また同様に「涙の乗車券」のエンディング・リフレインの音飛びも、修正したものとそのままのものと両バージョンを収録しています。 

CDのディスク2は、これは2000年代に入って発掘された8月21日ミネアポリス公演を収録しています。ご存知の通り当時のオーディエンス録音で、けして音は良くありませんが、現状ベストの形で収録しています。ディスク２の後半は、いずれも初登場となる、このツアーにおけるビートルズのライヴ音源を収録しています。ツアー最終地カウパレスにの昼夜両公演より、現存する音源を収録しています。そしてボーナストラックとして、メルヴィンレコードからリリースされていたアナログ・ブート『VISIT TO MINNEAPOLIS』から「ツイスト・アンド・シャウト」「シーズ・ア・ウーマン」「みんないい娘」の3曲を収録。これはタイトルこそミネアポリスとなっていますが、実際はヒューストン公演の音源が収録されています。このクレジットミスが意図的なものなのかどうかはわかりませんが、まさか後に本当のミネアポリス公演が発掘されるとは、このアナログがリリースされた当時は思いもよらなかったでしょう。 

そしてDVDです。本作はDVDが2枚セットとなっています。DVDのディスク1はコンサートの映像を、ディスク2はドキュメンタリー演奏を、それぞれ収録しています。貴重な初登場映像が満載で、今まで誰も見た事のないコンサート映像をたっぷり収録していますので、かなりの映像マニアでも驚かれることでしょう。初日シェアスタジアムから時系列に沿って珍しい映像を惜しげもなく投入しています。シェアスタジアムにおける客席から撮影された8mmフィルム、トロントはメープル・リーフ・ガーデン、写真は有名ですが、それが実際に動いているサム・ヒューストン・コロシアムの映像、その他ポートランドやカウパレスなど、これほどの映像が残されていたとは驚きのひとことです。ディスク2にはオフステージのビートルズ、各地で熱狂的に迎えられる様子などが収録されています。 

Mクローデルが贈るライヴ・クロニクル・シリーズの最新作は、1965年夏の北米ツアーの音源と映像を集大成したタイトル。音源も映像も初登場をふんだんに盛り込み、今まで誰も見た事のない映像など、ディープなマニアも唸る素晴らしい内容となっています。もう出尽くしたかと思われるビートルズのライヴ音源ですが、Mクローデルのライヴ・クロニクル・シリーズは、今後も初登場音源、初登場映像を準備しています。ご期待ください。美しいピクチャー・ディスク仕様の永久保存がっちりプレス盤。
