“プログレ・ハケット総決算”の第一夜を収めた極上ライヴアルバムが登場です。すでに各所で絶賛されている今回のジャパンツアーですが、本作が記録されたのは「2016年５月21日クラブチッタ川崎」公演。今週は複数のタイトルが一気に公開されましたので、日程で整理してみましょう。

このように、今回の日本ツアーは全３回。そのすべてがプレスCDとして登場したわけです。その１つひとつに意味が異なり、「川崎＝関東圏の単独フルセット」「日比谷野音＝CAMEL等とのフェス」「大阪＝関西圏の単独フルセット」といった具合。そのうち、本作は「関東フル」にあたる初日公演のオーディエンス・アルバムなのです。
そんな川崎公演を収めたのは、東京・神奈川で名作を連発している名手。先週、ツアー第一報としてネット音源『WOLFLIGHT IN KAWASAKI 2016』をご紹介しましたが、もちろん完全な別録音で録音家本人から直接譲られたマスターをダイレクトに使用しています。そして、この録音家こそ、同時リリースされる『PROGRESSIVE ROCK FES 2016（Virtuoso 294-297）』やCAMELの『TOKYO 2016（Virtuoso 288/289）』も手がけた方。もちろん、この３本は機材も同じですし、なんと偶然にも録音ポジションもほぼ同じ“前方３列目”なのです。そのため、この３本のサウンドはかなり似ている。もちろん、バンド側の出音が違うのですから厳密には同じではありませんが、会場音響に左右されない直近ポジションならではのダイレクト感が凄まじい。３本とも、この録音家コレクションでもズバ抜けており、いわゆる「まるでサウンドボード」と呼ぶのも躊躇わないタイプの超クリア・サウンドなのです。実際のところ、CAMELにしてもハケットにしても、フルの単独公演かフェスのどちらか音の良い方だけプレスできれば……と想定していたのですが、どれもこれも甲乙付けようがない超高音質。一気にすべてプレスする運びとなったのです。
そんなサウンドで描かれるハケットのフルセットは、GENESISのプログレッシヴ・ロックを現代にまで伝える眩惑の世界。今回の来日は、ソロとGENESISの両方をフィーチュアし、「第１部ソロ篇」と「第２部GENESIS篇」の２部構成。まず登場する「第１部ソロ篇」にしても、多彩な作品群の中から“プログレッシヴ・ロック”にだけ焦点を当てており、GENESIS時代のソロデビュー作『VOYAGE OF THE ACOLYTE』と最新作『WOLFLIGHT』の２枚にしたもの。『VOYAGE OF THE ACOLYTE』は“GENESISよりもGENESISらしい”と言われた名盤ですし、『WOLFLIGHT』にしてもGENESIS復刻ツアーの経験を元に制作されたアルバム。それだけに、「第１部ソロ篇」もGENESISに通じる“ハケット流プログレ”が存分に味わえるのです。実際、「ソロ篇・前半」に披露される『WOLFLIGHT』は、軽快・華麗に舞うギターを中心としながら、時に繊細に、時に重厚壮麗に轟く。まさにハケット・ミュージックの粋です。そこに「Spectral Mornings」「Every Day」といった名作『SPECTRAL MORNINGS』の名曲が挟み込まれるわけですが、まったく違和感がありません。
そして、なんと言っても嬉しいのが「ソロ篇・後半」。これまた名作『PLEASE DON’T TOUCH』の「Icarus Ascending」を契機に『VOYAGE OF THE ACOLYTE』の名曲が立て続けに４曲披露されるのです。後にハケットと結婚（後に離婚）したキム・プーアのアルバム・ジャケットも目に浮かぶ、“あの”美しきファンタジー世界が広がるのです。いつものGENESIS名曲群も嬉しいのですが、日本で初期ソロの名曲群がたっぷり聴けるなんて……。日本公演ではベースがロイネ・ストルトからKAJAGOOGOOのニック・ベッグスに交代しましたが、彼のベースワークも素晴らしい。幻想や儚さを一切損なうことなく、ドラマとダイナミズムをグイグイと引き上げる重低音。それらすべてがハッキリ・クッキリと刻まれた名録音なのです。
もちろん、「第２部GENESIS篇」も文句なし。サウンドは公式級のまま一切揺らぐことのない盤石ぶりです。こちらも「ソロ篇」と同じようにさらに前・後半に分けられる。「GENESIS篇・前半」は「Get ‘Em Out by Friday」からの５曲で、前回来日ではやなかった曲だけで『FOXTROT』から『THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY』までを時系列に総括。そして、「GENESIS篇・後半」は、本編ラストの「The Musical Box」、アンコールの「Dance On A Volcano」「Firth Of Fifth」の人気曲３連発で一気に盛り上げるのです。
実のところ、海外公演では「Dance On A Volcano」ではなく、ソロの「Clocks」が演奏されていたものの、やはりこちらの方が盛り上がる。海外とは違って、この曲のみ４人編成時代ではありますが、結果として“第２部以降＝全部GENESIS”の統一感で貫かれているわけです。

全３日間のうち、「関東のフル公演」となるライヴアルバムです。ハケット・ファンの方なら３公演をコンプリートしても良し、CAMELの『TOKYO 2016』や『PROGRESSIVE ROCK FES 2016』と併せて“同一録音家の三部作”をコレクションしても良し、もちろん、本作だけでも特級の１本。2016年の初夏に現出した“ハケット流プログレ”の桃源郷。どうぞ、たっぷりとお楽しみください。
