Broadcast of the 1982 version “SUPERGROUPS IN CONCERT” was the content that had taken over the official live album “STILL LIFE” as it was, so if the album infiltrates among fans, the value of the broadcast will be cut by half. Therefore, broadcasting of “SUPERGROUPS IN CONCERT” which can be called a revised version on March 19, 1983, which half a year has passed since the 82nd edition broadcasting has been realized. 1982年版「SUPERGROUPS IN CONCERT」の放送はオフィシャル・ライブ・アルバム「STILL LIFE」をそのまま取り込んでいた内容だったことから、同アルバムがファンの間に浸透すると放送の価値も半減してしまいます。そこで82年版の放送から半年が経過した1983年3月19日、改訂版とでも呼べる「SUPERGROUPS IN CONCERT」の放送が実現しています。ちょうど放送の直前にはアメリカで1981年ツアーのライブ映画「LET’S SPEND THE NIGHT TOGETHER」公開されたこともあり、ストーンズとしても81年のアメリカ・ツアーの脚光を浴びさせたいという狙いもあったのでしょう。
83年版の非常に画期的だった点は、何といっても「STILL LIFE」音源が大幅に削除され、代わりに今回の番組用に新たな81年ツアーテイクがふんだんに採用されたことです。82年版放送時には同アルバムを補完できる内容という価値があったものの、アルバムとダブってしまっていることがすぐに大きなマイナス・ポイントへと変わってしまった。それだけに再度の放送が実現したことはマニアを大いに喜ばせたのです。
この時の放送から生み出されたのが「MISSION DIRECT HITS」や「ON TOP OF OLD SMOKEY」といった、これまた懐かしのLPブートレグたち。特に前者で際立っていたのは、81年のテイクに混ざって同じアメリカ・ツアーでも78年の音源が混ぜられていたという特異な編集センス。「MISSION DIRECT～」のリリース時にはブートにありがちな水増し収録かと誤解されそうになったものですが、実際には放送時から別の年代のライブが含まれるというおかしな編集だったのです。おまけにピッチがここでも高め。それでもステレオ・サウンドボード録音の最高クオリティで「STILL LIFE」とは別の81年ツアーの演奏が聴けるということから、ここに挙げたアイテムを愛聴したマニアの方は少なくなかったかと。

それにしてもピッチの高さだけでなく、別の年代のライブが組み込まれた編集は83年版の大きな欠点でした。82年放送版と別の落ちがあった訳ですね。82年版のようなライブの流れを分断してまで挿入された関係者インタビューもなく、純粋に81年ツアーのステレオ・サウンドボード録音を「STILL LIFE」とのダブり激減で聴けるせっかくの作りであっただけに惜しまれました。
しかし今回も番組に関してはクリアマウンテンがリミックスを担当しただけに、各採用テイクの仕上がりは素晴らしいものがあります。ここに収録されたテイクの多くが今や「CONCERT VAULT」サイトから全長版で聴かれるようになってしまいましたが、それがラフミックスだったのに対し、ここではクリアマウンテンによる圧倒的な完成度を誇るミックスで楽しめるのです。例えば12月5日ニューオリンズでの「Let It Bleed」は先の音源ですとイアン・スチュアートのピアノが右側でキースに押しやられ気味なバランスで鳴っていたのに対し、ここでは左に分離してクリアーに存在感を表わしているのだからさすが。
この「Let It Bleed」に代表される見事なミックスがラジオショー音源ならではであり、当時のLPに封じ込まれたナチュラル感がまた素晴らしい。今回の限定プレスCDリリースに際しては、82年版と同じくオリジナルの放送用原盤LPから細心の注意を払ってトレース。スクラッチ・ノイズの無いクリーンな状態と正確なピッチで1983年当時の放送をプレイバックしてくれる最高のアイテムに仕上がりました。もちろん82年版との聴き比べもぜひお楽しみください！
