“STRAIGHT BETWEEN THE EYES TOUR 1982”は、1982年5月にスタートし、その後、北米(8月まで)→日本(10月)→ヨーロッパ(10月から12月)と、約半年かけて世界を回ります。「DEATH ALLEY ROCK FEVER」は、その極初期だったわけですが、本作は逆に終盤ヨーロッパツアーの映像です。このツアーからはオフィシャル映像「LIVE BETWEEN THE EYES」もあるわけですが、本作はオーディエンス・ショットゆえに“客席目線”でライヴを楽しめ、さらにボブ・ロンディネリが叩く「I Surrender」「Since You Been Gone」も一貫の流れで観ることができます。とは言うものの、大半の曲は「LIVE BETWEEN THE EYES」と被っていますし、「I Surrender」「Since You Been Gone」もチャック・バーギ版とは言え、「JAPAN TOUR ‘84」で観られる。本作は、どちらかと言うと“存在そのもの”にスペクタクルを感じる映像です……と、ここで「なんだ、その程度か」と思われた方、もう少々この駄文にお付き合いを!
1982年というと、まだまだ一般にビデオカメラが普及しているとは言えず、撮影者はかなり大型のカメラを隠して持ち込んでいるはず。しかも、テープ自体もまだ高価で小まめにライヴ撮影できるわけでもないのに、バツグンの安定度で撮影しており、“史上最もアクションが激しかった”と言われるリッチー・ブラックモアをばっちり集中して押さえています。もっと言えば、テレビ局ですらマスターをダビングで消していた時代に、本作を消さずに残していた。本作は、この事実を無言のうちに訴えかけています。その辺の子どもですら自録り動画をSNSにアップする現代では忘れがちですが、“世界一RAINBOWを愛している”と自認し、かつ最新テクノロジーにも興味旺盛だった日本でさえ、1982年の映像は残されていない。この事実を思い起こしていただきたい。ここにこそ、“RAINBOW愛”・“リッチー愛”があふれているのです。
さらに言えば、これが北欧撮影というのもポイントです。当時は“アメリカ向けポップ路線”のイメージが強烈で、実際「STRAIGHT BETWEEN THE EYES」は1stアルバム以来の全米30位をマークしました。しかし、目を北欧に向ければ、スウェーデンでも7位を記録しており、ジョー・リン・ターナーに代わってからロニー・ジェイムズ・ディオ時代以上にグングン支持を伸ばしていた。もちろん、「ABBAが好きだ」というリッチーの言葉の通り、ポップな音楽性を好む地域性もあったのでしょうが、本作がシュートする中心はジョーではなくリッチーです。私たち日本人は、とんでもなくRAINBOWを愛していますし、ジョー時代もそれなりの評価を得ています。そこに疑いの余地はない。しかし、そこに「アメリカ向けでも許す」という、ある種の“おごり”はなかったでしょうか? 本当にリッチーはアメリカだけを見てポップな音楽を目指したのでしょうか?

本編「DEATH ALLEY ROCK FEVER」は、激レアな曲と演出が楽しめるヒストリカルなライヴアルバムです。その一方、本作は今まで私たちが頭ごなしに信じてきた“アメリカンRAINBOW”に一石を投じる意味でもヒストリカルな映像です。クオリティ的には美麗マルチカメラのオフィシャル映像に及ぶべくもありませんが、“ノイズの向こうにリッチーを探す”といったレベルでは(決して!)なく、撮影者自身でなくても通して楽しめる画質、リッチーのアドリブひとつ、それに応えるジョーの息づかいまでたっぷり味わえるサウンドです。
RAINBOWを深く愛している方、リッチーの音楽の向こうに“なぜ”まで思いを馳せてしまう方にこそ、ご覧いただきたい歴史的映像です。幾分、マニアックであることは否定しませんが、であるからこそ、観る度に、想いを馳せる度に深まっていく1本。ここに刻まれた事実を歴史の闇に忘れ去ってしまっていいわけがない。ぜひ、この機会に味わい尽くして頂ければ幸いです。
