Wardourレーベルが2012年にリリースした「WEMBLEY STADIUM 1986」。あのオフィシャルのプロショットとサウンドボードで慣れ親しんだ1986年ウェンブリー・スタジアム2デイズがオーディエンス録音とは今更…誰もがそう高を括っていたであろう、世界中のマニアをアッと言わせたタイトルです。おまけにどちらも極上の音質。ウェンブリー・スタジアムの文字通りアナザー・サイドをドキュメントしてみせた衝撃の音源を収録したリリースは評判を呼び、当店の予想すら上回るスピードでSold Outとなってしまったのです。やはりオフィシャルで充実したアイテムが存在するコンサートでも、抜きん出た音質のオーディエンス録音であればドキュメントとしての価値は色褪せない。そんな問題提起をしてみせたと言っても過言ではないアイテムでした。
クイーンのライブ史における最後の輝ける日々となってしまったマジック・ツアー。その中において、もっともグロリアスなステージがウェンブリー2デイズ。一年前には解散すら考えていたバンドがたった一日の、しかも30分にも満たないステージで息を吹き返してしまったのが、あのライブ・エイド。そこから始まった怒涛の復活劇を経て、再びウェンブリーに凱旋してみせたのがこれら二日間だった。
とはいっても1986年当時にはクイーン最新ツアーの一つでしかなく、いつか新たなるツアーが行われると思われていただけに、フレディの死によってマジック・ツアーの位置づけは非常に重要なものへと変わってしまいました。そこからグループは5年も存続していたものの、まさか最後のライブ・ツアーになってしまうとは。その結果としてネブワースとウェンブリー二日間はマジック・ツアーの中でも特に重要なステージという扱いに昇格。そこで時間の経過によってバージョンアップしていったのがオフィシャル一連のウェンブリー・スタジアムのアイテムでした。

中でも2011年には決定版と呼べるアイテムがリリースされ、それさえあれば伝説のウェンブリー・ショウは事足りる…誰もがそう思っていた中で突如現れたのが「WEMBLEY STADIUM 1986」でしょう。あらゆる意味で世界中のマニアに衝撃を与えた本アイテムですが、7月11日のオーディエンス録音からして際立っています。あの映像を見れば解るように、雨が降りしきる中（大雨とまでならなかったのが不幸中の幸いでした）中でライブが行われただけあって、オーディエンス録音という行為自体が勇気のいるもの（笑）。あの状況の中において、これほどまでの音質で捉えてくれただなんて…。
音質は当店がこれまでリリースしてきたベルリン、ウィーンそしてネブワースといったマジック・ツアー極上オーディエンスに比肩しうる見事なもの。オーディエンスの熱狂と演奏のダイナミズムの両方を理想的なバランスで捉えており、音像のオンな度合も申し分ありません。そして何よりも、1986年7月11日ウェンブリーのアツい空気感をたっぷりと吸い込んでみせた味わいは格別。もちろん演奏のクリアネスはオフィシャルの圧勝な訳ですが、実際にスタジアムにいた観客たちが耳にした音や場の雰囲気というのは、正にこちらの音源でしか味わえない。
だからこそ伝わってくるリアルな臨場感。「Another One Bites The Dust」におけるコール・アンド・レスポンスの楽しさ、それに続いたフレディの「色々噂が飛び交ってるけど、クイーンは解散しないからね」発言に対する安堵感といったオーディエンスの反応がステージからの出音をふさぐことなく記録されている驚きのクリアネス。これこそがオーディエンス録音の真骨頂だと断言いたしましょう。しかも本音源の登場によって「Guitar Solo」のエンディングが短縮、さらには「Love Of My Life」のミスを修正といった、ブライアン絡みの場面でいくつか手を加えられていた判明したことも、オーディエンス録音というありのままのドキュメントだからこそ証明できた事実。

一方で7月12日は「WEMBLEY STADIUM 1986」リリース時にも大きな話題を振りまいた驚愕のクオリティ。これがもうサウンドボード感たっぷりの凄まじさ。当時はミキシング・エリアのスタッフがマイクを立てて録音したのでは？という推測も生まれたほど、別格なクオリティのオーディエンス録音。あまりにもオンでリアルな音像であり、スピーカーから大音量で鳴らせば、いよいよ「PAアウトのサウンドボードか？」と錯覚しそうになるクリアネス。しかしながら、オフィシャルの整理されたバランスとはまったく異なるものであり、こちらもまた慣れ親しんだウェンブリー二日目を別の角度から楽しませてくれる極上録音であることに変わりないのです。
2012年のリリース時、この音源によってオフィシャルも二日目は手が加えられていないという衝撃的な事実が判明。フレディのコンディションが前日に軍配が上がってしまう（特に「Bohemian Rhapsody」）のは致し方ない訳ですが、バンド自体は前日よりもパーフェクトな演奏を繰り広げていたということが証明されたのです。この衝撃に加え、何といってもオーディエンスとサウンドボードのいいとこどりをしたような音質は、オフィシャルを見た後でも文句なしに楽しめ、かつ新鮮に映ること間違いなし。
そして今回の再発に当たっては、両日とも欠損部分をオフィシャルのサウンドボードをイコライズし、違和感なくアジャスト。特にテープ・チェンジという現実によって「Impromptu」パートや「Crazy Little Thing Called Love」の終盤でどちらの日もカットが生じているのですが、奇しくもフレディの歌が入らない箇所ですので、オーディエンスとサウンドボードのハイブリッドな状態にもまったく違和感が見られません。そこでもまた今回のオーディエンス録音の卓越したクオリティを実感してもらえること同時に、ライブの展開を知ったかのようなテープ交換タイミングの鮮やかさにも驚愕。2012年のリリースからSold Outを経て、マニアから再リリースの要望が多く寄せられていたアナザー・サイド・オブ・ウェンブリー。その復活にマジック・ツアーから30周年という2016年ほどタイミングほどふさわしいものはありません！
