何といっても音質が素晴らしい!そもそもマジック・ツアーは1986年という時代背景も手伝って、優秀なクオリティを誇るオーディエンス録音が数多く存在します。当店がリリースしてきたネブワースやウィーンなどはその最たる例でしょう。そうした名音源がそびえたつ峰の中に余裕で入り込めるのがベルリン公演。一聴して解るオンな音像の迫力だけでも満足できる、見事な録音状態。中でもロジャーのドラムを中心としたクイーン・リズムの迫力を見事なまでに捉えてくれたのがこの音源最大の魅力ではないでしょうか?
何しろマジック・ツアーはスタジアムを始めとした野外会場ばかりを使って行われましたので、音像自体がオンなバランスでキャッチできたとしても、リズム隊の音域までカバーできなかった音源は決して多くありません。その点、このベルリン音源が聴かせるド迫力のバランスは今聴いてもまったく色褪せていない。こんな極上音源のアップデートが忘れ去られていたとは…
マニアの間でも評価が高かった「移民の手品」も非常に素晴らしい音質ではあったのですが、今から15年近く前のリリースでしたので、そこに施されたイコライズが今となっては時代を感じさせます。幸いにも原音を歪ませてしまうような過激なセンスではなかったのですが、元々リズム隊がいい感じのバランスに捉えられていたところがブーストされた仕上がりで、所によってはモコモコとした質感に響きます。もっとも元の音質が非常に優秀ですので、大幅なアッパー版とまではいかなくとも、今回のリリースはイコライズを控え、マスターの音質を尊重した状態で収録しましたので、低音の迫力に留まらない、それこそ一皮むけたかのようなクリアネスとナチュラルを実感されることでしょう。

演奏の方はツアー開始から三週間を経過し、当店が決定版をリリースした「DEFINITIVE MANNHEIM」の6月21日でツアー序盤が完了。小休止の後の初日とも言うべきステージですので、それまでの勢いに余裕が合わさった、掛け値なしに素晴らしいライブ・パフォーマンスが繰り広げられていることは、マニアの方ならとうの昔にご存知かもしれませんね。この日最大のサプライズであったZEP「Immigrant Song」の場面も、そうした余裕が成せる業だったのかもしれません。
今回のリリースで初めて聴かれる方に説明させていただきますと、いつものアドリブ合戦が繰り広げられる「impromptu」パートにおいて、それが収束しそうなところでブライアンが同曲のリフを突如として弾き始めたことがきっかけとなりました。後にオールディーズ・コーナーの締めで演奏されることになるスペンサー・デイヴィス・グループの「Gimme Some Lovin」がマンハイムでは「impromptu」に続いて雪崩れ込むような展開が試されていましたが、その展開を試すことを踏まえ、ブライアンがこの日は「Immigrant Song」を試したのかもしれません。
結果として彼が「仕掛けてきた」訳ですが、それが始まるとロジャーがドラムを叩きながら雄叫びをはじめ、そこから引き継ぐようにフレディが歌い始めます。ところが、ここでの彼の歌はでたらめの極致(爆笑)。途中からまともな歌詞を歌ってくれたのですが、最後は当時のフレディにきついのでしょう、裏声で歌ってごまかしています。ロバート・プラントよりもロック・シャウターとしての寿命はずっと長かったフレディですが、さすがにこの時の彼に1970年のプラントの物真似は厳しかったのですね。結局50秒足らずのお遊び的演奏ではありましたが、マニアの間で語り継がれてきた有名な場面だけのことはあり、これは本当に面白い!

とはいえこの場面が物語っていたように、この日のフレディは「Under Pressure」辺りから声が苦しくなり始めます。これは連日のツアー疲れではなく、小休止の後の立ち上がりとなったステージで調子が出ないのだと推測されます。それはまるでウェンブリー・スタジアム二日目を思わせる様な調子でした。そのせいなのでしょうか、いつもならちょっとしたアドリブやイントロをじらすのが当たり前な「Bohemian Rhapsody」をすぐに弾き始めるという、意外に珍しい場面も聞き逃せません。それでいて抑えた歌い方が聴きどころになってしまうのがフレディの見事なところで、中でも最後の「We Are The Champion」などは哀愁のフィナーレと化してこれまた面白いもの。
このように聴きどころ満載のライブ・パフォーマンスに加え、マジック・ツアー屈指の高音質を誇る極上音源が久々にリリースされます。先に触れたドラムスの迫力もさることながら、オールディーズ・コーナーにおけるシンプルなアンサンブルも生々しい音圧(ジョンのベースラインまでもがしっかりと聞き取れるほど!)で楽しめるという驚きの音源。最初から最後まで、見事な録音状態には脱帽するしかありません。この音源のアップグレード・バージョンを待ち望んでいたマニアはもちろん、ウェンブリー・スタジアムやハンガリアンといったオフィシャルの後、オーディエンス録音でマジック・ツアーを堪能してみたい…といったファンにも最高の一枚です!
