POISONは1990年のMONSTERS OF ROCKに出演しましたが、このライヴはそのウォームアップ・ギグ。大ヒット作「FLESH & BLOOD」から２ヶ月も経っていないタイミングで実現した英国初ライヴを名匠Crazy S.が客席録音で記録していたわけです。セットリストは、黄金の初期３作からズラリと並び、1st「LOOK WHAT THE CAT DRAGGED IN」から２曲、「OPEN UP AND SAY… AHH!」から５曲、そして新作「FLESH & BLOOD」から４曲。“THE BEST OF POISON”な名曲群を、ノリに乗っている彼らが演奏する理想的なショウなのです。
まさにPOISONの旨みを凝縮したようなライヴなのですが、本作の最大の魅力はそこではなく、観客にこそあります。なにしろ、開演前からはち切れんばかりの“待ちきれないムード”が渦巻き、１曲目から歌う、歌う！　歌う!!　ミドルだろうが、アップだろうが、新曲だろうが黄色い嬌声が沸き上がり、サビの大合唱が巻き起こるのです。POISONと言えば、ＬＡメタルの象徴のようなパーティロック。日本では“アメリカ＝脳天気＆パーティ、イギリス＝ウェット＆シリアス”なイメージがありますが、この時代はイギリスのキッズもこうしたグラムメタルが大好きだったのです。いえ、グラムロックと言えば、むしろイギリスこそが本場。彼らがウケていたのも、実は当然だったのかも知れません。
そして、そんな彼らの初上陸、初ライヴが本作。その熱狂がCrazy S.氏によってリアル＆クリア・サウンドで55分にわたって真空パックされているのです。実際、本作は大合唱巻き起こる熱狂盤ではありますが、その歓声の熱さは十二分に伝わりながらも、あくまで楽音こそが主役。まるで大観衆がステージ上でコーラス隊をやっているようなバランスと言いますか、演奏・歌をぶ厚く彩りこそすれ、邪魔にはならないのです。
特に素晴らしいのは、バラードの「Every Rose Has Its Thorn」。アコースティックギター１本をかき鳴らし、観客の合唱がメインヴォーカルを担当する。大合唱にも関わらず、その中をアコギの音が綺麗に突き抜けてくるのです。どういうポジションで録音されたのかはわかりませんが、スケール感を描き出しながらもクリアさが際立つ録音……さすがはCrazy S.です。しかも、このシーンは、まるで日本のアイドルのコンサートかのような大合唱なのですが、（当然のことながら）英語が恐ろしく上手い。歌詞にも歌い出しのタイミングにも、一瞬の迷いすらない。日本だと感動的ではあってもどこか垢抜けなくて気恥ずかしい合唱シーンも、やたらとカッコ良くビシビシと決まっているのです。そんなライヴの一部始終を収めた本作、Crazy S.氏のオリジナルカセットからして素晴らしいサウンドでしたが、今回はさらに音圧も上げ、現代オーディオ環境に最適になるようリマスタリングしました。

黄金期POISONの頂点を100％本生記録しただけでなく、英国メタルキッズの素顔にまで迫れるリアルなライヴアルバム。LAメタルはアメリカ西海岸のローカルブームではなく、全世界的に愛されていた。80年代後期にまばゆく輝いていたHR/HMに出会える１枚、現場でたっぷりと吸い込んだ空気をスピーカーから吐きだしてくれる１作です。底抜けに明るいパーティロックも、綺麗なバラードも、心を掻き立てるから歌わずにはいられない。もし環境が許すなら、今週末は本作を大音量でかけ、あなたも大合唱に加わってみませんか。
