1970年1月に行われた4回のイギリスでのコンサートから、3回目となる1月18日、サリー州クロイドンはフェアフィールド・ホール公演でのライヴを、当時としては最長の一つとなる127分に渡って良質なオーディエンス録音で全曲収録したファン必聴テイクが登場です。「Atom Heart Mother」は、前日の17日ヨークシャー公演にて、初めて公の場で披露されたその説がありますが、その日の音源は現在に至るまで存在していませんので、今回のクロイドン公演音源が、最も最古の「Atom Heart Mother」のライヴ音源ということになります。（今週リリースの新作「CRYSTAL PALACE 1971」が最古の「Echoes」を収録しているのは興味深い偶然の一致です。）つい先日、発掘され話題を呼んだ1月23日のパリ音源は、本公演から2回目のライヴであり、そこでも聴けるように、「Atom Heart Mother」は、後半のニックのドラムソロを含んだパート以外は、ベーシック・トラックに関しては殆ど完成しています。Embryoは、1969年のＢＢＣセッションで演奏された時は短めの小品と言った感でしたが、ここでは11分に渡って演奏されており、中間にはギターソロとヴィブラフォンのソロが挟まった、壮大な曲調に変化しています。前半では映画のサントラ「More」からの抜粋に加え、「The Man」の一部で、Workとして演奏されていたBiding My Timeが単独で演奏されています。ディスク１の最後に Astronomy Domineが収録されていますが、実際はコンサートのオープニングトラックではないかと推測されます。ディスク2冒頭には15分に及ぶ、映画「Zabriskie Point」のアウトテイクと言われるThe Violent Sequenceを収録。無機質的な反復するリズムによるHeart Beat, Pig Meatで始まり、ドラムソロとピアノの激しい掛け合いを中盤に挟み、ラストは「狂気」に収録されることになるUs And Themの原曲をピアノで奏でるというこの時期お馴染みの3部構成の実験的組曲。ラストは17分に及ぶアンコールA Saucerful Of Secretsで、緊張感を孕んだ圧巻の演奏を堪能できます。曲間のカットが多いですが、音像そのものは終始安定しており、ヒスノイズの問題や、音の割れや劣化も無いので、全くストレス無く聴けます。現在、マスターから枝分かれしているリールテープ・コピーが2種存在するようですが、本音源は近年登場した、本公演を収録したテイクでは、最もジェネ若と言われている、マスターリールテープからのコピーのRAW TRANSFERテイクを収録しています。聴けば、一発で判りますが、とにかく劣化の無い澄んだ音の響きは素晴らしく、おそらく、70年クロイドンに関しては、実際のコンサートから44年も経過していることを考えると、今後、これ以上のテイクは出てこないのではないでしょうか。綿密かつ繊細なリストア作業も施されているようで、音像の安定感は驚くべきものがあります。前述の曲間カットの関係か、収録されている曲順など、全体のセット構成が不明ですが、この素晴らしい歴史的テイクをあるがまま聴ける最良盤ということで、間違いなくファン必聴・必携の2枚組に仕上がっています。高かったピッチは正確に補正済み。本来ならこのままストレートにプレスCD化が相応しい1970年クロイドン公演の決定盤をお楽しみください。
