1977年の”IN THE FLESH”ツアーのアメリカ日程から、本当に久々に登場するフレッシュなリリース！もちろん、アニマルズ・ツアーと呼んだ方が解りやすいですよね。今更ではありますが、ツアーの中でもアメリカ日程からは名音源の数々が残されており、しかもそれらの決定版と呼べるタイトルを当店がリリースし続けてきました。中でも5月のオークランド、6月のボストン、そしてツアー最終日かつ「ロジャー唾吐き事件」でおなじみ7月のモントリオールといった具合に、それぞれの月で決定的なオーディエンス録音が存在します。それどころか、これら三つの音源こそ、アメリカ日程を代表する三大音源だと言っても過言ではありません。
しかし1970年代のコンサート録音です、すべてがそれらのクオリティで録音できることなど、到底無理な話。むしろ、この時代においてもそれらのような別格のクオリティを誇るオーディエンス録音が複数存在するということ自体が奇跡のようなもの。他にもマディソン・スクエア・ガーデンなどからも、やはりウルトラ・クオリティのオーディエンス録音が残されているなど、本当にアニマルズ・ツアーは音源が恵まれています。

それらの定番と呼べる音源が出尽くしてしまった今、それでも新たなアニマルズ・ツアーの音源、あるいは存在しながらも見過ごされているオーディエンス録音のリリースを求める声が後を絶ちません。これは一重に、フロイドのキャリア後期において高い人気を誇る時期であることの証でしょう。1974年から始まった新たな方向性の模索が行き着いたのが「アニマルズ」のハードロック・サウンド。75年までの時点でどうしても垢抜けなさの抜けない、新曲のオーバーホールが見出したのがそのハードなサウンド。これはアルバム以上に、アニマルズ・ツアー開始後、中でもアメリカのスタジアム・コンサートで猛威を振るうことになるのです。
もはやゴリゴリと言ってもおかしくないほどにハードなサウンドは、基本的に落ち着いてライブを鑑賞できない笑、あるいはドラッグでラリッた観客を威嚇するには十分なもの。それでいて「狂気」のメガヒットによってアメリカで絶大な人気を獲得していた地位によって、スタジアム・コンサートが当たり前となってしまった1977年。その成功と引き換えに、かつてのような繊細で深みのあるイメージを喚起させるサウンドがもはや奏でられなくなった違和感に悩みつつも、ロジャーを中心としたグループがアメリカのスタジアムで先進性すら感じさせるハード・ロックを鳴らしていた様を、先に挙げた極上音源の数々が証明してくれていました。

そこで今回、アニマルズ・アメリカツアーから今までアイテムの存在しない公演の音源が限定のプレスCDにてリリースとなります。選ばれたのは6月19日のシカゴ、ソルジャー・フィールド公演。数か月前に同地を訪れたレッド・ツェッペリンがより小さな規模のシカゴ・スタジアムで連続公演を行ったのに対し、大掛かりな音響と照明の装置の移動も伴うフロイドは、はるかに大きなキャパシティを誇るソルジャー・フィールドを使って一夜限りのシカゴ公演というころがまたグループの人気の凄まじさを物語ります。しかも、そんな大会場でやるからには、やはりアニマルズのハードなサウンドが必要不可欠であったことでしょう。
ただし今回の音源、マイク・ミラードによる最強音質を誇ったオークランド、あるいはクリアネスが魅力な優等生音質と言えるボストンの域には及びません。何といってもヒスノイズが目立つワイルドな質感、さらには「Pigs」などに起きるカット(5:24)。これらの問題から、先の名音源と比べて見劣りする面があることは否めません。それにオープニングの「Sheep」では周囲が騒がしく、いかにもアメリカのアニマルズ・ツアーらしい場面も見受けられました。
しかしそれでもなお、リリースするからには大きな魅力を持った音源であることも断言いたしましょう。サウンドだけでなく、会場における音響システムも進化させてきたフロイドならではの臨場感を見事なまでにオンな音圧でキャッチしてくれました。確かにヒスノイズが気になりますが、それをねじ伏せるようなイコライズを施せば十年前のプレスCD的音質に堕ちかねません笑。むしろナチュラルさを生かしたヒスノイズ感と、それ以上に魅力なのがオンな音像に輪をかけた驚きのステレオ音像です。

先にも触れましたように、フロイドのライブ会場が独自のPA設備によって70年代のコンサートとしては飛び抜けた音質の良さを誇っていました。それを捉えているのがこの音源であり、ヘッドフォンで聴くと各楽器の音が左右に飛び交うステレオ音像の見事な状態に打ちのめされてしまうこと間違いなし！録音者がそれを意識していたことも音源から伝わって来るのですが、例えば「Pigs on the Wing (Part II)」や「Have A Cigar」などにおいて、録音者が「（これが）マイクだと解るだろ、近寄って来るな！」といった具合に怒っているほど。つまり、自身が録音していることを周囲にアピールしているのだから笑わずにはいられません。反対に「Pigs」では二回も爆竹が鳴らされてしまうにもかかわらず、ロジャーは怒った様子もなく休憩を告げているからまた面白いものです。
そんな録音者が苦心しただけのことはあってか、このシカゴ音源のステレオ感には本当に驚かされます。アンコールの「Money」におけるギルモアのギター・ソロなど、まるでラジオ放送のサウンドボード録音かと錯覚そうになるほどの音像とステレオ感。なるほど聴けば納得、荒さを感じさせる音質ながらも、さすがに今回限定のプレスCDにてリリースされるだけのことはあります。その度肝を抜くようなステレオ音像とアニマルズ・ツアー迫力のロック・サウンド（そんな中での「Pigs」終盤におけるちょっとしたジャジーな展開は聞き逃せません）、これらをヘッドフォンでじっくりと味わってみてください！
