御存知とは思いますが、この狂気・世界初演の録音は過去に既発音源が存在しました。有名なものでは海外TRIANGLEレーベルから出ていた『THE DARKSIDE REHEARSALS (PYCD 065-2)』や『HERE THEY COME (Little Pieces Productions / LPP)』等があり、お聴きになった事がある方も多いと思います。ただそれら既発盤はもう15年近く前のサウンドなだけに、現代の優良なブートレッグ・サウンドに慣れた私達の耳には物足りなくなっているのも事実です。今回登場する本作も音源自体は唯一確認されている同一の録音ソースを使用しているのですが、このたび海外の重鎮フロイド・コレクターからSigmaに届けられたのは、その初演音源が驚きのアップグレードを遂げた高解像サウンドでした。ただ元々この名音源は優秀なAUD録音ですから、既発盤で音を聴いた事がある方にはアッパー版・リマスター版と言われてもなかなかピンとこないかもしれません。しかし聴けば瞬時にその音質差に気が付く或る秘密が、この最新音像には備わっているのです。

その要因となっているのが静音域の大幅な見直しです。例えばこの初演では御存知の通り「Money」の途中で機材トラブルにより演奏が中断されるという予想外のハプニングが起こる訳ですが、前曲「The Mortality Sequence」の途中から生じるハム・ノイズの不気味な音とその波長の高まり、「Money」でやむなく中断する際の各楽器の音の散り方、その後暫く静まり返る場内…等、どれもそのシーンの背後に質の高い静音があってこそ、この初日のドキュメンタリーを深く実感出来る事に気付かれる筈です。そのため本作は原録音に存在したヒスノイズ(＝既発盤サウンド最大のマイナス要因でした)を注意深く取り除きながら原音を精査し、音像に全く影響を与えずに原音の鋭さ・肉厚感・響きの波動を極限まで導き出す事に主眼を置いており、このため同じ音でも質感と透明度が格段に違う高級感溢れる仕上がりが実現しているのです。実際、既発サウンドと聴き比べると「あれ？ こんなに情感タップリの響きだった!?」と、誰もがその音色に感じた事の無い鋭さと輝きを眩しく感じるでしょう。もちろんこの世界初演の聴きどころはそれだけではなく、例えば

では耳を傾けてみましょう。「Speak to Me」はまず音群移動装置によってテープ再生される鼓動の音が、場内のあちこちから出ている様子が鮮やかに甦ります。この時点で既に既発サウンド以上の質の高さを感じると思いますが、「Breathe」では歌詞1番と2番が混在する様子や旋律に不安定な揺れが生じるシーンなど、初演ならではの不思議な姿が更に上質なサウンドで現れるのです。「The Travel Sequence」は御存知の通り「On The Run」の初期バージョンですが、これもその音楽が” 走り回って “いる様子が既発サウンドを軽く超えて現れ、各楽器が発する微弱な音色と息遣いが絡み合って駆け抜ける音の成分に圧倒される筈です。顕著に現れるギターのコード弾きもリズム隊の響きも更にシャープな音像で出てきますし、演奏終了後に音が暫く残るシーンも音が消えゆくところまで静音域の美しさが際立っています。またそれだけに「Time」も無音から浮上するコチコチ音とシンセサイザーの音が明瞭感を増して耳元に届き、かなり長いイントロが録音本来の音色の魅力と芳醇さを放つ驚きに唖然とされるでしょう。ギルモアとライトによる2声のハーモニーは若干弱々しいですが、これもまた初演ならではの旋律線の細さ・弱さという魅力を完璧に捉えていますし、ドラムの打音が更に良く聴こえる様になった事も大きなトピックです。「Breathe (Reprise)」は歌詞が無く、トーキング・モジュレーターを使ったギターが陶酔感満点の麗しいサウンドで現れては流れ去る様子が未知の生々しさで御体験戴けるでしょう。「The Mortality Sequence」もフレクサトーンを使用している極初期の姿が既発を一蹴する響きを伴って登場しますが、御存知の通りこの曲の中盤で機材システムに問題が発生してハム・ノイズが漂うようになり、その後「Money」の途中でやむなく演奏を中断するシーンが出てきます。この、ノイズの発生から各楽器が演奏を止めてゆく一連の様子も未体験の生々しい音像で今回甦っており、原録音本来のドキュメンタリー・サウンドでその場に居合わせる事が出来るのです。「Atom Heart Mother」は『狂気』が完奏出来なかった為の代演となっている訳ですが、これも鋭く研ぎ澄まされた静音域のレストアによって演奏音の曖昧さが取り払われ、原音のダイナミックさと陶酔感のブレンドに酔い痴れること確実です。

機材の復調を確かめる様に” One, Two “というロジャーによる長めのマイク・テストからスタートする「Careful With That Axe, Eugene」も浮遊する音ひとつひとつの芯に確かな手応えが備わり、中盤までの押し殺した様な閉塞感とスクリーム後の音楽的な広がりが特級の音像で出る様になりました。後の演奏より余裕を持たせた長めの終曲部も素晴らしい音像で出てきますので注目です。「One Of These Days」では低音域の威力が格段に増しているのを実感されると思います。モノローグ前の” ドン!ドン!ドン! “という例のバスドラムの動機音がこの日は序盤(1分51秒～59秒)と中盤(5分40秒～)で2回入ったり、次第にリズムが薄れる中でシンセサイザーの効果音が挿入されるなど、71年後半の北米ツアーでも披露された特徴的な姿も一層色濃く甦り、終演後も軽いチューニングとギルモアがクラシックな旋律を爪弾く様子が一層麗しい音色で出てきます。「Echoes」はサウンドが精査された事で特に耳を惹く一曲となっており、中でも情熱的なタッチによるオルガンの重厚な音色にそれが顕著です。アホウドリのシーンでも後半で多様な鳴き声を試す音色の変化がこれまで以上に感じられますし、そこから音楽が再浮上して後半に向かう流れもバックのリズムと旋律線が双方鮮明に浮かび上がり、胸ざわめく響きが大きな波動となってゆく陶酔が見通しの良い、まさに” 鳥観的な “音像で甦っているのです。「A Saucerful Of Secrets」では1分15秒付近～27秒でベースに2音の素早い動きが見られるなど、序盤から緊張感の高い奇怪な音の交錯と融合が透明感満点の音像で推移し、リズムが動き出すシーン(※ 4分08秒～)も各楽器の衝突音が異常なほどの間近さで迫ります。最終パートから入ってくるスライド・バーによるギターの響きも素晴らしい解像度で息を吹き返しており、終盤では何故かこの日はギルモアのガイド・ボーカルが” 入らずに “終演するという、極めて珍しいシーンを音源史上最高の力強い透明サウンドで体験出来るのです。
