誇りを持って、この歴史的な最重要盤をご紹介させていただきます。PINK FLOYDコレクターの皆様なら一度は耳にしたことがあるであろう「1971年10月17日サンディエゴ公演」、そのアッパー・バージョンです。アナログ時代から大定番として君臨し、2006年に「HEART OF DARKNESS」（Sirene-190）が登場した際も「サウンドボードと何も違わない」と大絶賛を集めた、あの大名録音です。
この歴史的な録音はGordon S.氏がリール録音したもの。残念ながらそのリール・マスターは消失し、同氏がバックアップにコピーした「1st gen cassette」が最上位音源とされています。2009年には「SAN DIEGO 1971 FROM LOW-GEN REEL-TO-REEL」がギフト・リリースされたこともありましたが、本作は“LOW-GEN”どころか、伝説的な「1st gen cassette」そのものからダイレクトにデジタル化されたDATを使用。さらに海外マニアによって丁寧にリマスタリングが施され、経年によるわずかなピッチの狂いや左チャンネルにあったザラつきも綺麗にリペアされています。しかも、このマスタリングが実に見事。現存する最上位マスターへ最大級の敬意が払われ、決してやりすぎることなく、テープが本来持っていた生々しさが一切損なわれていないのです。
そして、そのサウンドで記録されたライヴは、コンセプト王の座に就く直前のPINK FLOYD。アルバム「Meddle」の録音を済ませながら、発売が約２週間前に迫ったツアー３日目というタイミングです。1970年にサイケデリックロックから長大なブルースロックへと変貌を遂げつつ、文学的な構築よりもあくまでサウンド・アートの域で気を吐いていたFLOYD、その集大成を聴かせてくれるツアーなのです。あまりに完成されたパフォーマンスは、ともすれば閉塞感さえ感じさせるのですが、それを打ち破るのがフリーフォームな「Embryo」。この凄まじい起伏のダイナミズム。これが味わえるからこそ、“この時期が一番好きだ”というマニアも絶えないのです。
本作は、曲間がカットされており、（このツアーの標準セットリストから察するに）「Echoes」「A Saucerful of Secrets」も欠落。こうした欠損は既発と同じですが、「1st gen cassette」に収録されていないのですから、最初から録音されていなかったのでしょう。これほどのパフォーマンスだけに、“ぜひ完全版を聴いてみたい”との想いが頭をよぎってしまいますが、同時にこれほどのサウンドが残っていること自体、人智を超えた恩恵なのです。今はただただ、記録の存在と全身で対峙し、その恩恵を全霊で感じる以外にありません。PINK FLOYD音源史上でも特筆される名録音、永遠の輝きをプレス２CDに託してお届けいたします。
